This article describes the work of the Networked Resources and Metadata Committee (NRMC), a committee within ALA’s Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS). The article discusses NRMC’s history, initiatives, and program highlights, gleaned from an interview held with the present and past chairs of the committee. Numerous details about NRMC’s role within the larger metadata community are shared, as are future directions for the committee.

This article details the DC‐dot metadata editor, a tool developed by the UK Office for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN) to promote use of the Dublin Core (DC) Element Set. DC‐dot is one of the oldest and most widely‐used Dublin Core metadata generators. Andy Powell, Distributed Systems and Services Team Leader at UKOLN and creator of DC‐dot, discusses the state RDF, the impact that XML will have on Dublin Core, the challenges facing the DC Metadata Initiative, his role as a member of the DC Advisory Committee, and advice for metadata implementers.

This article reviews Scirus, Elsevier Science’s search engine. Scirus is advertised as the world’s first scientific search engine. It indexes freely‐available Web sites, as well as proprietary content owned by Elsevier and its partners. Scirus was awarded “best specialty search engine” by Search Engine Watch, and may spark a trend whereby other content providers index their content with discipline‐specific Web sites.

Explores the growing variance between proponents of traditional cataloging practices for Web objects, and those who advocate non‐AACR/MARC approaches to resource description. Describes changes to the Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) that have been perceived by some as counter to OCLC’s original mission. Reviews a recent issue of Library Computing devoted to library catalogs and cataloging practices. Concludes with an overview of the Delphi Study on Metadata, a project coordinated by Ingrid Hsieh‐Yee, associate professor at Catholic University of America’s School of Library and Information Science.

This article looks at XML’s first five years of existence. It reviews the original motivation for creating XML, and some of the applications this standard has made possible, specifically Rich Site Summary and Open eBook Publication Structure.

Recounts the 8th International Dublin Core Metadata Workshop held in Ottawa, Canada, October 4‐6, 2000. It provides overviews of the working group process, and developments within the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). NISO standardization, Dublin Core qualifiers, application profiles, administrative metadata, agent qualifiers, DC‐Education, DC‐Registries, DC‐Citation progress, and Extensible Open RDF Toolkit were main discussion topics of this workshop. This article also describes future goals of the DCMI, including additional qualifiers, multi‐lingual issues, and documentation policies.

This article reports on Connexion, OCLC’s new integrated toolset developed as its next generation cataloging system. The author considers the ever‐changing nature of technical services in light of technological evolutions, budget constraints, and the expectations of academic library users. The article also looks at the importance of education for in‐training and practicing catalog librarians.
