Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide classification confidence value to every individual sample classified by decision trees and use this value to combine the classifiers.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed system is first theoretically explained, and then the use and effectiveness of the proposed system is demonstrated on sample datasets.

Findings

In this paper, a novel method is proposed to combine decision tree classifiers using calculated classification confidence values. This confidence in the classification is based on distance calculation to the relevant decision boundary (distance conditional), probability density estimation and (distance conditional) classification confidence estimation. It is shown that these values – provided by individual classification trees – can be integrated to derive a consensus decision.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed method is not limited to axis‐parallel trees, it is applicable not only to oblique trees, but also to any kind of classifier system that uses hyperplanes to cluster the input space.

Originality/value

A novel method is presented to extend decision tree like classifiers with confidence calculation and a voting system is proposed that uses this confidence information. The proposed system possesses several novelties (e.g. it not only gives class probabilities, but also classification confidences) and advantages over previous (traditional) approaches. The voting system does not require an auxiliary combiner or gating network, as in the mixture of experts structure and the method is not limited to decision trees with axis‐parallel splits; it is applicable to any kind of classifiers that use hyperplanes to cluster the input space.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a new non‐technological innovation to manage socio‐economic crises. Economic theory, which is one‐sided and fails, cannot manage these crises; the model suggests that crises should be solved using social responsibility (SR), human requisite holism (RH), and well‐being (WB).

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative analysis using SR, Human RH, and WB, as well as dialectical systems theory, is applied. Field research involved Slovenian mid‐sized enterprises.

Findings

The current global socio‐economic/environmental crisis reflects decision makers' one‐sidedness and resulting oversights. SR supports their holism and honesty and fights their abuse of impact. SR can help solve crises by reducing human one‐sidedness better, if SR is upgraded with increasing WB, not welfare alone. Both SR and WB support RH behavior. The innovative synergy between WB and SR leads to a solution of crises. Dialectical systems theory supports WB and SR.

Research limitations/implications

The hypothesis is researched to the greatest extent possible, with qualitative analysis in desk and field research.

Practical implications

Findings support new requisitely holistic approach to managing socio‐economic crises in politics and business.

Originality/value

Available literature offers no similar concept.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show the effects of the six competence areas of Garcia-Aracil and Van der Velden (2007) on new graduates' labor market success measured by salary.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper starts with a literature review about the role of competencies in higher education. Then the Graduate Career Tracking System (GCTS) carried out at the University of Pécs (UP) in Hungary provides a good basis to understand the competence assessment methodology better. Furthermore, GCTS is suitable for carrying out an exploratory, a confirmatory factor analysis and an OLS regression to discover the connection between competencies and level of income.

Findings

The analyzed results, using a representative online survey based on 6,190 respondents, show that the six competence sets do exist, but that not all of them have a significant effect on salaries. With the control variables involved, 24.3% (EFA) and 23.0% (CFA) of the global competencies account for variance in salaries. The impact of methodological and the socioemotional set on salaries can be clearly seen among those with new degrees, and based on the results and the literature review, the HEIs can improve them.

Research limitations/implications

In the absence of nationwide general competence assessment, the results are limited only for the UP graduates of Hungary, even if this HEI is one of the biggest ones.

Practical implications

Based on the results, more soft-competence development courses and opportunities should be offered by the HEIs.

Originality/value

The findings of the study help us to understand the role of the institutions in tertiary education, the extra service to be provided to assist students in being successful in life. Based on the literature review, there is a need to understand better the connection between competencies and labor market success. This paper contributes to this and also presents an opportunity for further comparative research. The sample is robust to allow other researchers to use this conceptual model and apply it to other countries.
