Abstract
The British Employers' Confederation describes the plan to raise the school‐leaving age to 16 in 1970–1 as a “welcome change”, and expresses the hope that the extra year of full‐time education might be spent either in a school or in a technical college. The BEC repeats its statement to the Newsom Committee to the effect that Industry expects its new entrants to have a sound knowledge of the basic subjects, rather than technical skills which could best be imparted by industry itself.

Abstract
The history of book publishing in Nigeria is outlined and the different kinds of publishing houses are reviewed. The quality of book indexing by these publishers is reviewed and a study is reported which examines in detail the indexing practices of the publishers in relation to internationally accepted criteria. The results show a generally high standard.

Abstract
Our theory asserts that at low levels of ownership institutions may support management to preserve other business relations. At higher levels of ownership, institutions more actively monitor management because the gains from equity ownership exceed the cost of management review and of possible lost business. Corporate performance first decreases and then increases with the institution's ownership. Furthermore, the institutional ownership‐performance relation, especially the critical ownership level that separates management aligned institutions from efficiently monitoring ones, varies with management specific parameters (managerial effort disutility), firm specific parameters (firm size) and whether or not the institutional owner is pressure sensitive.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to develop an instrument for measuring Consumer Protection and its Determinants (CP&Ds). This is because literature on an instrument to measure CP&Ds is scarce.
Design/methodology/approach
In Nigeria, 53 questionnaires were distributed to legal practitioners. The study used 24 items to operationalize the CP&Ds. The research data were coded and scored, and the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using SPSS version 22. The Bartlett’s test of sphericity, Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin, Cronbach’s alpha and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were used for the EFA, internal consistency reliability and multicollinearity, respectively.
Findings
The EFA produced seven factors, and each determinant was found reliable with its measure of internal consistency.
Research limitations/implications
The research result may not be generalized across jurisdiction because of the limited sample size and the fact that the data were collected from Nigerian legal practitioners.
Practical implications
This study can be used by policymakers and even private electricity companies in the deregulated electricity sector in Nigeria for policy design and effective consumer protection.
Originality/value
From the extensive literature review none was identified on the scale development for measuring CP&Ds. This exploratory research is the first attempt to develop an instrument for measuring CP&Ds.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the curvilinear relationship between workplace ostracism (supervisor ostracism and co-worker ostracism) and knowledge hoarding by using the conservation of resources theory. In addition, the paper predicts one possible situational context (political skill) that may influence employees’ reaction to ostracism.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a two-wave research design, the authors collected data from 240 samples in a Chinese diversified company. Hierarchical regression models were used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The authors found that the relationship between workplace ostracism (supervisor ostracism and co-worker ostracism) and knowledge hoarding was U-shaped. Moreover, political skill moderated the linkage between workplace ostracism and knowledge hoarding such that the U-shaped association was stronger for people higher, rather than lower, in political skill.
Originality/value
By exploring a curvilinear relationship between ostracism and knowledge hoarding, the study enriches the knowledge hoarding literature by adding a substantive predictor of knowledge hoarding. The findings can also extend the workplace ostracism literature by providing a new conceptual analysis of interpreting the inconsistent findings involving the influence of workplace ostracism. Moreover, identifying political skill as a moderator can gain a better understanding of when and why an ostracized employee’s knowledge hoarding behavior can be less likely.

Observers of the Japanese phenomenon of maintaining a highly productive, highly innovative economy tend to see that country's philosophy of “life‐time” employment for some sectors of its work force as a particularly exotic aspect of the whole.

Abstract
Purpose
The study aims to explore the factors which influence collection development and management in academic libraries. In libraries and information centres, collection development is considered an essential element of the information life cycle. Collection development and management activities do not emanate from a vacuum. Several factors have a direct bearing on the way in which collections are developed and managed in the academic libraries. These factors are bridges and barriers for effective collection development and management.
Design/methodology/approach
An extensive review of the available literature was made to conduct the study.
Findings
The study found that several factors have a direct bearing on the way in which collections are developed and managed in the academic libraries. These factors include goals of collection development and management policies and procedures, user needs, collection development policies (CDPs), collection development budgets, collection evaluation to determine the strength and weaknesses of various subjects in the collections, selection of reading materials, formats in which materials are selected, the issues of access versus ownership, cooperative collection development, resource-sharing programs and legal issues in collection development and management.
Originality/value
This study provides an overview of various factors that influence collection development activities in the academic libraries. It provides an insight for the selectors of library resources to take these factors into account for building effective collections in the academic libraries of Pakistan and abroad.
