Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present study of creep strain rates in a circular cylinder under temperature gradient materials by using Seth’s transition theory.

Design/methodology/approach

Seth’s transition theory is applied to the problem of creep stresses and strain rates in a cylinder under temperature gradient materials by finite deformation. Neither the yield criterion nor the associated flow rule is assumed here. The results obtained here are applicable to compressible materials. If the additional condition of incompressibility is imposed, then the expression for stresses corresponds to those arising from Tresca yield condition.

Findings

Thermal effect increases the values of axial stress at the external surface of a circular cylinder for incompressible material as compared to compressible materials. With the introduction of thermal effects, the maximum value of strain rates occurs at the external surface for incompressible material as compared to the compressible materials.

Originality/value

The model proposed in this paper is used commonly either as pressure vessels intended for storage industrial gases or media transportation of high pressurized fluids and the design of turbine rotors.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to illustrate by example the value of interagency cooperation between US and international law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Design/methodology/approach

General review of post‐9/11 criminal cases brought by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and other parts of the US law enforcement community that involved cooperation between US domestic and international law enforcement and regulatory agencies.

Findings

Finds that confrontation of multi‐jurisdictional crime requires domestic and international interagency cooperation; efforts to promote cooperation between domestic and international law enforcement and regulatory agencies have produced positive results post 9/11 and like efforts should be encouraged.

Originality/value

The paper provides case studies evidencing the benefit of law enforcement interagency cooperation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand the socio-cultural context of Indian women's high-tech entrepreneurial experience. Despite a small proportion of women entrepreneurs, and the traditional gender dynamics among the educated middle-classes that appears to be antithetical to female entrepreneurship; women-led high-tech start-ups are on the rise.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women founders at an academic incubator in an elite Indian Institute of Technology. The study was based on the post-structural feminist approach that women entrepreneurs are embedded in their socio-cultural and institutional context. During data collection, the Coronavirus lockdown provided a natural experiment, highlighting entrepreneurial response to unforeseen obstacles.

Findings

It finds that the context is significant in constructing opportunity, and in navigating challenges of gender and entrepreneurship. Further, in the process of construction of an entrepreneurial identity, women innovators not only reproduce, but also modify their context. Also, the experiences with academic incubator indicate positive results both for gender dynamics and enhancing an emergent entrepreneurial culture.

Practical implications

The study highlights that women's high-tech entrepreneurship has considerable potential for enhancing women's status in society through the support of academic incubator. This has certain implications for policy.

Originality/value

It provides an insight in to the hitherto neglected issue of women's high-tech entrepreneurship in India, and argues that a study of “social embeddedness” not only highlights constraints for women entrepreneurs unique to that context, but also the potential of women's entrepreneurship in advancing women's agency and gender equality.

Abstract

Despite the Vedic texts and Puranas mentioning the emergence of Varnas and caste classification system, the origin of caste based on occupation and how they became powerful is not yet clearly known. However, the guild system that existed in the past did have a positive impact on the origination of the castes and tribes. This chapter aims to study the powerful guild system to understand the origins of Varnas and castes in the ancient India.

Abstract

Tourist policies and businesses today are not far beyond the effect of climate change. Worldwide, tourist demand, and popular locations have been hit hard by an increase in the frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as floods, heat waves, droughts, storms, and wildfires. Significant tourist attractions are also impacted by climate change. Sea level rise and ocean warming endanger resources like beaches and coral reefs, while snowfall has become less predictable in many winter locations. The expense of travel is also expected to rise due to climate change. The tourism is contributing to the carbon emissions and increasing hazards to the environment. What these trends have in common is their potential to alter the face of tourism throughout the world. Research on the topic of climate change and tourism has been around for a while, but this paper lays out the field’s evolution, outlines recent trends, and discusses the impact of climate change on tourism.

Abstract

The present study proposes two types of periodical inspection policies for a scale which weighs products in the final stage of manufacturing some specific products, such as chemical products. The scale is inspected at time iT(i=1,2, … ). Under ModelI, an inspection operation involves detection of a scale malfunction or inaccuracy as well as an adjustment activity. Under ModelII, an inspection is conducted only to detect a scale malfunction. If a scale malfunction is detected, an adjustment activity follows. For each model, the fraction defective and the long‐run average cost are formulated. We then examine the existence of an inspection interval Tα which makes the fraction defective under a prespecified value α (0< α <1). An economical inspection interval T* minimizing the long‐run average cost is also discussed.
