Abstract

This chapter provides information on the development of Vietnamese education under the influence of global forces based on the analysis of relevant education research and policies using Wolhuter’s frameworks. In the process of coming up with ways to develop education in the face of different influences of globalization, besides having reactions with patterns commonly found in countries around the world, Vietnam also has responses that reflect its own political, sociocultural and economic characteristics. The state still plays a controlling role in education at all levels and many culture-related features that have existed throughout the country’s history have hardly changed, namely aspects related to teachers, learners and teaching and learning methods. To sustain its education in the globalized era, Vietnam must make more efforts in various aspects such as the link between education and employment, the logic of education objectives, the feasibility and appropriateness of curricula, quality of education, especially of higher education and equality in education for underprivileged groups.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the role of self-esteem in mediating the relationship between passive social networking usage (PSNU) and life satisfaction, as well as whether the relationships between PSNU and self-esteem/life satisfaction as well as self-esteem and life satisfaction vary by gender.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is conducted in compliance with the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association’s study on a subject of 304 students. Study participants are invited to participate in the survey by completing the anonymous questionnaire regarding passive social network usage, self-esteem and life satisfaction.

Findings

The findings indicate that self-esteem mediated the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. Furthermore, gender moderated the self-esteem and life satisfaction relationship, and such an effect was stronger for females than males.

Research limitations/implications

This study, adopting a cross-sectional design and self-report scale, examined the relationship between PSNU and life satisfaction. However, the short study duration hindered establishing a cause-and-effect relationship. Credibility concerns arose from participant-induced noise variables in the self-report scale. Future research should use diverse methods to validate underlying mechanisms. Despite limitations, the study revealed self-esteem as a mediating factor, alleviating the negative impact of PSNU on life satisfaction. Both male and female users are encouraged to engage in self-education, valuing their self-esteem for heightened life satisfaction.

Originality/value

These findings contribute to the understanding of how passive social network usage predicts life satisfaction (mediating effect of self-esteem) based on social comparison theory and when self-esteem increases life satisfaction (moderating effect of gender) based on social role theory of gender differences.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the research is to investigate whether corporate social responsibility awareness (pCSR), environmental concerns (EC) and consumer environmental knowledge (CK) will have an impact on sustainable purchase intention (SPI). Furthermore, this paper also contributes to surveying the mediating impact of consumer attitudes (CAs) between intention and the three factors mentioned above.

Design/methodology/approach

SmartPLS (version 4.0) structural equation modeling (SEM) and quantitative methods were used to analyze 457 responses from consumers. The survey sample consisted of individuals between the ages of 18 and 34, with a male-to-female ratio of 70 to 30. The study aims to examine and put into practice new directions for manufacturing firms in the fields of fashion, food and consumer products. At the same time, provide more convincing evidence about the use of these fields in the research.

Findings

The study showed a favorable link between pCSR, EC, CK and SPI through the proposed hypotheses. The research additionally showed that CAs mediate between the aforementioned variables.

Originality/value

The important and distinctive results of this study encourage both consumers and enterprises to make changes in their perceptions of society. Consumers should gradually change their daily lifestyle by consuming more sustainable products. As a result, this outcome will provide the impetus for manufacturing businesses to alter their operational procedures in order to support the shift from the production of products to more friendly processes, with the help of all levels of management within the business.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate the impact of green human resource management on cognitive factors, employees' pro-environmental behavior and the environmental performance of hotels in Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon primary data collected from a sample of 393 hotel employees, this study utilizes covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB-SEM) to test hypotheses and conduct path analysis.

Findings

The study’s findings reveal several key insights. Firstly, GHRM positively influences environmental knowledge (EK), environmental attitude (EA), attitude toward pro-environmental behavior (APB), pro-environmental behavior (PB) of employees and environmental performance (EP) of hotels. Additionally, the results also indicate that EK promotes EA, APB and PB, and both EA and EK can predict PB of employees. Surprisingly, the results from CB-SEM analysis reject the direct impact of APB on PB. Moreover, this study also confirmed the positive influence of PB on EP of hotels. Notably, the research delves into the moderating effect of work overload (WO) on the associations between GHRM and PB, as well as APB and PB.

Practical implications

The findings offer valuable recommendations for hotel managers and policymakers, aiming for effective GHRM practices and improvement of employees’ PB and EP of hotels.

Originality/value

This study broadens the understanding of sustainable management practices, specifically in human resource management in the hospitality industry. Notably, it identifies significant avenues to address theoretical gaps left by previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the important role of knowledge sharing (KS) processes for organizational innovation, the purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating roles of tacit and explicit KS in bridging the relationship between high-involvement human resource management (HRM) practices and specific aspects of innovation capability, namely, product and process innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis of moment structures and structural equation modeling are applied to examine the correlation among the constructs based on the survey data collected from 111 manufacturing and service firms.

Findings

The empirical findings reveal that KS processes positively mediate the relationship between high-involvement HRM practices and innovation capability. It highlights the important role of explicit KS in fostering aspects of innovation capability compared to the effects of tacit KS on aspect of innovation capability.

Practical implications

Vietnamese firms should pay much attention to high-involvement HRM practices to improve their innovation capabilities. In addition, fostering the willingness of employees for sharing tacit knowledge (e.g. experiences, uncommon understandings and insights) and explicit knowledge (e.g. formal information, official documents and reports and procedures and policies) is one of the most optimal solutions for firms to pursuit product and process innovation capability.

Originality/value

This paper significantly contributes to increasing knowledge and insights on the correlation between high-involvement HRM practices and specific forms of innovation. The understanding on mediating role of KS processes contributes to advancing the body of knowledge of HRM practices and innovation theory.

Abstract

Purpose

Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) rates continue to be low in Vietnam. This study aimed to determine the factors predicting 6-month EBF among mothers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study was conducted with 259 mothers of infants aged between six to nine months at well-baby clinics in Ho Chi Minh City. The questionnaires used for data collection included personal background questionnaire, perceived benefits of breastfeeding scale, breastfeeding self-efficacy scale-short form, perceived barriers to breastfeeding scale and the family support of breastfeeding scale. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis.

Findings

About 32% of the Vietnamese mothers practiced 6-month EBF. By increasing one unit of perceived benefits of breastfeeding, perceived self-efficacy in breastfeeding and family support, the mothers' likelihood to give 6-month EBF would increase 19% (AOR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.08, 1.31), 12% (AOR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.04, 1.19) and 10% (AOR = 1.10, 95% CI = 1.04, 1.16), while previous breastfeeding experience, maternal age and maternal education could not significantly contribute to the 6-month EBF.

Originality/value

This is the first study in Vietnam using a nursing model, the health promotion model, as a framework to identify factors predicting 6-month EBF. An effective program for promoting EBF could be developed by manipulating and tailoring the predicting factors to fit the Vietnamese mothers' needs through a mother class, lactation clinic or individual approach.

Abstract

Using energy economically and efficiently is essential to ensure national energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and preventing climate change. Household appliances consume considerable energy, so choosing energy-efficient is to consuming energy economically and efficiently. The research applies the extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) to empirically investigate factors affecting consumers’ purchase intention toward energy-efficient household appliances (EEHA) in Ho Chi Minh City (HCM). The chapter develops both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method is conducted with five in-depth interviews to get more consumer insight, verify the research model, and elaborate the questionnaire. The quantitative method with 300 consumers living in HCM is used to address the research question. The primary data are collected via a web-based questionnaire and analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 20 and Amos 20. The research indicates that attitude, subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), past purchase experience (PPE), and economic benefit (EB) have significant positive impacts on consumers’ purchase intention. EB has the most significant impact. Nonetheless, consumers’ purchase intention is not significantly impacted by their level of environmental knowledge (EK). Besides, PPE and EBs positively impact attitude and indirectly affect purchase intention, while EK does not. Based on the empirical results, some recommendations are drawn for policymakers to promote energy-efficient household appliance consumption by citizens, thereby ensuring national energy security and promoting environmental protection. Implications to help manufacturers improve products in the right direction and make wise investment decisions and distributors/retailers to understand consumers in HCM are also suggested.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to give comprehensive strategies for developing sustainable tourism destinations by incorporating case studies, conceptual frameworks, and existing research. By addressing the lack of holistic approaches in sustainable tourism practices, this study seeks to provide insightful information that can guide stakeholders, policymakers, and destination managers in effective decision-making and planning.

Methodology/study design/approach: A comprehensive literature review has been conducted for analyzing peer-reviewed journal papers, case studies, and conceptual frameworks relevant to sustainable tourism benchmarking. Peer-reviewed journal papers, case studies, and conceptual frameworks pertaining to sustainable tourism benchmarking have all been examined through a thorough assessment of the literature. In this study, numerous information on sustainable tourism and benchmarking strategies allows for a meticulous understanding of benchmarking and its relevancy to sustainable tourist destination development.

Findings: The study distinguishes essential strategies for benchmarking sustainable tourist destinations, which include stakeholder engagement, integration of the triple bottom line framework, choosing appropriate indicators, promotion of certification and standards, and encouraging collaborations among destinations. The case studies highlight, the significance of having a long-term commitment, governance, and stakeholder involvement while implementing sustainable tourism policies.

Value: This study presents a combination of existing literature and frameworks to evolve comprehensive strategies for benchmarking sustainable tourist destinations. By incorporating perceptions from various sources, this study gives valuable direction for practitioners and researchers seeking to advance sustainable tourism practices.

This chapter explores the present state of the worldwide tourism sector and its complex phenomenological interconnection with climate change. This analysis emphasizes the significant environmental consequences resulting from the rise of tourism, which can be attributed to the exponential growth facilitated by enhanced connectivity and the concurrent increase in disposable incomes. It thoroughly analyses the primary factors that contribute to the environmental impact of the sector, which encompasses emissions from transportation, infrastructure development, waste generation, and resource usage. Furthermore, this analysis sheds light on the obstacles encountered in the process of shifting toward sustainability, including limited knowledge and understanding, deficiencies in policy implementation, and reluctance to embrace transformation within the sector. However, it also provides insights into numerous activities and solutions currently in progress to alleviate the environmental impact of the industry. The aforementioned approaches encompass the implementation of sustainable tourism practices, legislation revisions, and advancements in technology. This chapter concludes by highlighting the imperative need for a collaborative initiative including governmental bodies, industrial participants, and tourists to establish a harmonious equilibrium between the pursuit of economic expansion and the protection of the environment. The future trajectory of global tourism is contingent upon the adoption of sustainable practices, which are crucial for fostering a healthy coexistence between the tourism industry and the environment.

Abstract

“The world needs science, science needs women” is the message given by UNESCO in the program for the development of women in science” (UNESCO, 2017). In Vietnam, women’s participation and achievements in scientific research is considered a great and important resource for industrialization and modernization. Even so, are there gender differences in scientific achievement in the social science research institutes in Vietnam? What factors influence the scientific achievement of female social researchers? The answers will be based on data from a 2017 survey with a sample of 756 researchers, of which 77.6% were female. The survey was conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, a leading, ministry-level national center for the social sciences in Vietnam. This chapter analyzed the scientific achievements of researchers through their position as principal investigators of research projects and their publications, and factors that may impact this. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of factors that may affect the scientific achievement of researchers found that gender differences in academic achievement in the social sciences in Vietnam was still prevalent. Female researchers’ scientific achievements were lower than those of their male counterparts. The contribution to science of Vietnamese female researchers was limited by many different factors; the most important were the academic rank of the researchers and gender stereotype that considered housework the responsibility of women.
