Abstract

This paper describes the hypermedia authoring and annotation capability of the VTLS InfoStation. Such a capability offers library users services previously unavailable in a traditional library automation system. Hypermedia enables readers to travel from one document to another with ease. In effect, it automates the process of following references in an encyclopedia. It also supports collaboration among researchers, professors and students by allowing them to annotate within the context of a body of scholarly material. Furthermore, it helps users look up related items in a library more efficiently without having to search through an entire database.

Abstract

This paper describes the cutting‐edge hardware and software for multimedia information storage and access. We will focus on the NeXT computer as the innovative hardware platform and introduce the VTLS InfoStation as the new generation software that offers user‐friendly multimedia information access using expert systems, natural language processing, direct manipulation graphical techniques and retrieval of full text, images and audio data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to calculate the back scattering response from single, finite and infinite arrays of nonlinear antennas like the case where the antennas are exposed to high-value signals such as lightning strokes.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors have used a recently introduced optimization technique called intelligent water drop.

Findings

The results exhibit that the method used by the authors is faster and more accurate than other conventional optimization algorithms, i.e. particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithm.

Originality/value

A new optimization algorithm is used to solve nonlinear problem accurately and sufficiently. Although the technique is not confined to the mentioned examples in the paper, it can be applied to other nonlinear circuits.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming, powder metallurgy and composite material processing are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for 1994‐1996, where 1,370 references are listed. This bibliography is an updating of the paper written by Brannberg and Mackerle which has been published in Engineering Computations, Vol. 11 No. 5, 1994, pp. 413‐55.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop an adaptive finite element method for structural eigenproblems of cracked Euler–Bernoulli beams via the superconvergent patch recovery displacement technique. This research comprises the numerical algorithm and experimental results for free vibration problems (forward eigenproblems) and damage detection problems (inverse eigenproblems).

Design/methodology/approach

The weakened properties analogy is used to describe cracks in this model. The adaptive strategy proposed in this paper provides accurate, efficient and reliable eigensolutions of frequency and mode (i.e. eigenpairs as eigenvalue and eigenfunction) for Euler–Bernoulli beams with multiple cracks. Based on the frequency measurement method for damage detection, using the difference between the actual and computed frequencies of cracked beams, the inverse eigenproblems are solved iteratively for identifying the residuals of locations and sizes of the cracks by the Newton–Raphson iteration technique. In the crack detection, the estimated residuals are added to obtain reliable results, which is an iteration process that will be expedited by more accurate frequency solutions based on the proposed method for free vibration problems.

Findings

Numerical results are presented for free vibration problems and damage detection problems of representative non-uniform and geometrically stepped Euler–Bernoulli beams with multiple cracks to demonstrate the effectiveness, efficiency, accuracy and reliability of the proposed method.

Originality/value

The proposed combination of methodologies described in the paper leads to a very powerful approach for free vibration and damage detection of beams with cracks, introducing the mesh refinement, that can be extended to deal with the damage detection of frame structures.

Abstract

Over 2 million individuals are incarcerated in the US criminal justice system. More than half of incarcerated Americans are also parents of minors. Parental incarceration can lead to a higher risk of mental illness and enduring trauma in children, as well as other problematic cognitive, developmental, and educational outcomes. Examining parental incarceration through a racial equity lens is critical, as people of color make up 67% of the incarcerated population despite making up only 37% of the US population. Further, gender-related equity issues pose important challenges for families with incarcerated parents. Here, we discuss prison-based psychosocial interventions designed both to build parenting skills and to improve parent well-being within a racial and gender equity lens. We hypothesize that effective services in these areas are essential components in a broad strategy designed to mitigate the potential negative effects suffered by families and children of incarcerated parents of color as a result of their imprisonment.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to predict and evaluate the wear rate of TiAl-2 Wt.% MoO3 tabular crystals (TMCs) using the Newton interpolation methods.

Design/methodology/approach

The friction and wear behaviors of TMC were examined using pin-on-disc apparatus at different times, namely, 1,200, 2,400, 3,600, 4,800 and 6,000 s. The wear rates of five different times as interpolation nodes were measured and calculated by electron probe microanalysis (EMPA) and field emission electron microscope (FESEM). Then, the prediction formula of wear rate was constructed using the Newton interpolation method. The accuracy of the prediction formula and the relationship with friction layer and worn surface are verified for evaluating the reliability of the prediction formula.

Findings

The prediction formula shows a similar variation trend of TMC as the experimental results, indicating that the prediction formula can forecast the wear rate and working condition of TMC. Moreover, the microstructures of friction layer and worn surface also have a strong impact on the prediction formulas.

Originality/value

The prediction formulas of the Newton interpolation polynomial can be adopted to predict working longevity in the mechanical components, which can guide the practical engineering application in industrial fields.
