Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine supervisor-subordinate relationships and their impact on performance appraisal in Croatia. Specifically, we were interested in examining how supervisor-subordinate relationships impact subordinate perceptions of performance evaluation and the subordinate's reactions to the performance evaluation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper uses matched data from a sample of supervisors and subordinates (n = 53) in a leading organization in the hospitality industry in Croatia, as well as objective performance appraisal data to examine the impact of supervisor-subordinate relationships on subordinate reactions to performance appraisal.

Findings

The key findings of this study include (1) supervisor trustworthiness determines the quality of their relationship with subordinates and leads to interpersonal liking, and (2) supervisor-subordinate relationship quality has a significant impact on subordinate reactions to performance appraisal process and outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The overall sample size (n = 53) of this study is small, and limits our ability to make generalizations beyond a point. Also, since the sample included only Croatian individuals, the findings maybe an artifact of the fact that they all hold similar values. Future studies should examine these relationships in supervisor-subordinate dyads comprised of individuals of different cultural backgrounds.

Practical implications

Supervisors should attempt to have high quality relationships with most, if not all, subordinates, as this would lead to higher acceptance of the performance appraisal process, which can impact future performance. Also, trustworthiness is closely related to the subordinate's perception of the quality of relationship he/she shares with the supervisor.

Originality/value

This is the first known paper to empirically study performance appraisal processes and relationships in Croatia, which also included both supervisor and subordinate perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an extensible framework for extracting data set usage from research articles.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework uses a training set of manually labeled examples to identify word features surrounding data set usage references. Using the word features and general entity identifiers, candidate data sets are extracted and scored separately at the sentence and document levels. Finally, the extracted data set references can be verified by the authors using a web-based verification module.

Findings

This paper successfully addresses a significant gap in entity extraction literature by focusing on data set extraction. In the process, this paper: identified an entity-extraction scenario with specific characteristics that enable a multiphase approach, including a feasible author-verification step; defined the search space for word feature identification; defined scoring functions for sentences and documents; and designed a simple web-based author verification step. The framework is successfully tested on 178 articles authored by researchers from a large research organization.

Originality/value

Whereas previous approaches focused on completely automated large-scale entity recognition from text snippets, the proposed framework is designed for a longer, high-quality text, such as a research publication. The framework includes a verification module that enables the request validation of the discovered entities by the authors of the research publications. This module shares some similarities with general crowdsourcing approaches, but the target scenario increases the likelihood of meaningful author participation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the influence of different Specialized Physical Education (SPE) teaching programs on the level of students’ physical abilities.

Design/methodology/approach

In the Academy of Criminalistic and Police Studies (ACPS), one of the teaching program goals is an improvement of student's physical abilities level. Since the establishment of ACPS, three SPE programs have been implemented differing in number of class hours. Five different tests were used: “Isometric dead lift,” “Hand grip,” the Long jump (LJ), the Sit-up test and the Cooper test.

Findings

Multivariate analysis of variance results indicated a statistically significant difference between the programs in tests LJ, Sit-up and Cooper. The Bonferroni test showed differences between all three programs. The discriminant analysis showed that both discriminant factors are statistically significant. The greatest factor in the first function was the test LJ, while the greatest factor in the second discriminant function was the Sit-up test.

Practical implications

The importance of research was the fact that by determining the changes of students’ physical abilities level, the authors can evaluate the effectiveness of various SPE programs. Results could be used in planning standards, selection and control of the achieved physical abilities level.

Social implications

Changes could contribute to the positive effects of the educational process on improvement of students’ physical abilities.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies which examine the influence of quantitatively different teaching programs on the level of physical abilities within a period of 15 years.
