Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to give an overview of scholarly monographs on rock music from 1980 to the present. It aims to provide an overview to the literature for practical purposes of collection development as well as giving the reader insight into key issues and trends related to a interdisciplinary topic that attracts scholars from many disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
Design/methodology/approach
This bibliographic essay, focusing on works related to American culture and of a general nature, includes an overview and historical background; a discussion of how music and ethnomusiciological scholars approach the topic; geographic approaches; literature on four key icons (Elvis, Dylan, Springsteen, and Madonna); American studies; subcultures and genres; other methodologies; and concludes by discussing notable recent works.
Findings
The scholarly literature on rock incorporates a wide variety of approaches and methodologies. Many music‐related scholars appropriate methodology from other disciplines and some non‐music‐related scholars use the formalistic analysis of music scholars. Authenticity is a major theme in the literature on rock.
Originality/value
This essay covers the widest range of monographs on the topic, providing insight into not only the key scholars but also the diversity of approaches to the topic. The historical approach to the literature gives the reader a sense of how the academic discourse on rock has evolved. This essay is of interest to librarians, scholars of rock music, and others concerned with how American scholarship in the humanities and the social sciences has grown since the advent of cultural studies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the notion of attractive workplaces in the specific context of creative professional employment.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on observations and interview data at knowledge‐based firms in the UK, the paper looks at the extent to which employees are “rewarded” with the offer of creative work and the degree to which this offer really involves greater benefits for employees in terms of professional prestige and the confirmation of their identities as professional workers in the creative industries.
Findings
The paper finds that creative needs remain important components of the attractive workplace, but increasingly also of importance are the extrinsic rewards of an acceptable work‐life balance as the age profile of the technology worker changes and technology stagnates.
Research limitations/implications
This research focused on one group of workers within one specific country. Whilst it was found that work in the software sector is becoming less creative, this may not be the case across all contexts.
Practical implications
There is clearly a problem, of developing young technology specialists within Scotland. In order to maintain the “Smart, Successful Scotland” propounded by the Scottish Government, drastic steps need to be taken to educate the IT workers and indeed, entrepreneurs of the future.
Originality/value
This paper is new as there has been little recent research undertaken examining the IT sector in Scotland. More generally, there is a scarcity of work focusing on workplace attractiveness for IT specialists.

Abstract
Previous research suggests that women receive less critical attention and acclaim in popular music. The authors expect that gender differences in the amount and content of media discourse about popular musicians occur because music critics draw on the cultural frame of gender as a primary tool for critical evaluation. In order to explore the role of gender as a frame through which aesthetic content is evaluated, the authors conduct detailed content analyses of 53 critical reviews of two versions of the popular album 1989 – the original released by Taylor Swift in 2014 and a cover version released by Ryan Adams less than a year later. Despite Swift’s greater popularity and prominence, the authors find that reviews of her version of the album are more likely to focus on her gender and sexuality; less likely to describe her as emotionally authentic; and more likely to use popular aesthetic criteria in evaluating her music. By contrast, Ryan Adams was more likely to be seen by critics as emotionally authentic and to be described using high art aesthetic criteria and intellectualizing discourse. The authors address the implications of the findings for persistent gender gaps in many artistic fields.

Abstract
Introduction Industrial holding companies continue to play an important role in the development of many Western style economies. These institutions take a wide variety of forms to accomplish their principal objective, namely the control and management of multi‐company systems which normally span a wide range of industrial sectors. They are more typically found in Europe and Japan than in the US, where both legal constraints and the pursuit of managerial efficiency have resulted in the dominance of the large scale integrated, multi‐unit corporation as an organisational form. Within Europe, especially in Belgium and France, inter‐market conglomerates and holding companies maintain an important position in some of the more basic sectors of the economy—including banking, insurance, transport, public utilities, basic metals and construction. In both these countries however, these are characteristically financial institutions managing a portfolio of stocks in order to exercise control over the companies in which they hold equity capital.

Abstract
Although music can be used in social studies classrooms to give students a picture of society from different time periods, modern music of all genres can help students understand more recent historical events. This practitioner paper seeks to assist and encourage teachers to utilize modern music for present-day analysis of society. We will address the current events of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and help teacher’s stimulate critical responses in students by using a variety of musical genres to analyze multiple perspectives of the wars. Teaching strategies and assessing students through authentic engagement with content and artists are discussed and we conclude by offering a sample lesson plan using a model of analysis.
