Abstract
Purpose
Conventional approaches to digital preservation posit that archives should define a Designated Community, or future user group, for whom they preserve digital information. Archivists can then use their knowledge of these users as a reference to help them deliver digital information that is intelligible and usable. However, this approach is challenging for archives with mandates to serve wide and diverse audiences; these archives risk undermining their efforts by focusing on the interests of a narrow user group.
Design/methodology/approach
A unique approach to this challenge was developed in the context of a project to build a digital preservation program at the Ontario Jewish Archives (OJA). It draws from previous research on this topic and is based on a combination of practical and theoretical considerations.
Findings
The approach described here replaces the reference of a Designated Community with three core components: a re-articulation of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) mandatory responsibilities; the identification of three distinct tiers of access for digital records; and the implementation of an access portal that allows digital records to be accessed and rendered online. Together with supplemental shifts in reference points, they provide an alternative to the concept of a Designated Community in the determination of preservation requirements, the identification of significant properties, the creation of Representation Information and in the evaluation of success.
Originality/value
This article contributes a novel approach to the ongoing conversation about the Designated Community in digital preservation, its application and its limitations in an archival context.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to explore the curation of government-produced datasets for release as open government data (OGD) from the perspective of the digital curation and preservation concept of a “Designated Community”. Specifically, it explores how digital curation functions when there is no clear Designated Community to which curation services can be targeted.
Design/methodology/approach
The research was conducted through a case study of the City of Toronto’s efforts to revitalize their OGD program. Data was collected using three methods: semi-structured interviews, non-participative observation and document analysis.
Findings
The curators of OGD responded to the absence of a Designated Community through two complementary methods. The first was to draw from the discourse that defines the OGD domain. The second was to take a participatory approach that incorporated members of the community surrounding OGD and various other stakeholders into the process of developing a plan for the revitalization of the program.
Research limitations/implications
This study opens new directions for investigating the application of the Designated Community concept and its role in digital curation and preservation.
Practical implications
The approach used by OGD curators in this case has the potential to be used in other curation situations where there is no clearly defined user group.
Originality/value
The findings presented in this paper contribute empirical insights to on-going discussions on the concept of a Designated Community in digital curation and preservation.

Abstract
This study examines how budgetary support (BS), teamwork, and organizational commitment to employees (OCE) affect firm performance across two countries, Malaysia and the United States. By surveying senior managers of 165 small and medium enterprises, this study finds that teamwork and BS each has a direct effect on OCE and firm performance. Further, results indicate that OCE mediates the relationship between BS, teamwork, and firm performance. In Malaysia, but not in the United States, we find that teamwork affects performance directly. In the United States, but not in Malaysia, we find that BS affects performance, and there is an interaction effect between BS and management influence. We attribute the effects to the different national cultures and social-exchange relations and highlight the contributions to the budgeting research, organizational commitment literature, and to practice.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the corrosion inhibitor performance in acid medium through the determination of Fe2+ ions present based on reaction kinetics of steel with the acid. The use of corrosion inhibitors has been an excellent technique for protecting carbon steel pipes acidizing operations in oil wells. The inhibitor forms a chemical barrier on the metal surface that prevents or reduces attack by the acidic media.
Design/methodology/approach
The experimental study provides a methodology to evaluate the performance of corrosion inhibitors in an acid medium, preferentially of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The process consists essentially of total immersion coupons of carbon steel, with continuous stirring, controlled temperature and quantitative determinations of iron ions from the dissolution of steel. The additions of commercial corrosion inhibitor base of ethoxylated amines of high molecular weight in an acid medium showed excellent performance at a temperature ranging from 25 to 45°C.
Findings
This paper presents the mechanisms of protection, performance graphs and calculations of the activation energies of the addition of corrosion inhibitors in an acidic medium.
Originality/value
The originality of this essay is to evaluate and correlate the performance of corrosion inhibitors with the activation energy in experimental conditions.

Purpose
Aims to study the behaviour of four polycrystalline carbon steels in basic pitting solutions.
Design/methodology/approach
Electrochemical investigations were carried out on four steels: Fe.06C, Fe.18C, Fe.22C and Fe.43C. The analysis was made using an X‐ray fluorescence apparatus. The performance indicator was the pitting potential, which was obtained through potentiodynamic sweeping. Emphasis was placed on the influence of the pH, chlorine concentration, phase proportions in the steel and the initial electrode surface state.
Findings
The results showed that in a solution with a low chlorine concentration, the performance of the steels according to pitting corrosion resistance decreased with the increase in carbon content. By raising the chlorine concentration, the order of performance was inverted gradually, while at a high chlorine concentration, the behaviour of the steels tended to be similar. The interpretation of the results is based on the consideration of cathodic reactions on the level of the cementite phase and the difference in the local chemical properties of the solution. In neutral solutions, pitting potentials were shifted cathodically, but the main observations developed for basic solutions remained valid.
Originality/value
Provides further research on pitting corrosion.
