Abstract

Purpose

In order to increase productivity and create added value in ceramic and tile industries of Iran, the role of physical assets including machinery, equipment and utilities is very important in these industries, and management of those take an important role. Organizational culture and its role in physical asset management implementation are very important in the Iran ceramic and tile industries. In these industries, there is a secret force called culture, which must be changed if the organization wants to grow up and improve physical assets management. The purpose of this paper is to identify organizational cultural, technical and reliability variables and structure of these variables in form of a combined structural model.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to present a structural combination model, a development model type, the mixed research method is used, and expert’s comments are also used. This model was implemented at Apadana Ceram Company, and its results, in comparison with previous models on physical assets, have shown that consideration of four culture elements can be of great help to reach an optimal point in maintenance and excellence.

Findings

In this paper, analysis of previous research studies, project documents and expert’s opinions in ceramic and tile industries have been used. In the presented model, special attention has been paid to organizational culture and its four elements including values, patterns, rituals and procedures and cultural infrastructure in order to achieve excellence and reach an optimal point in maintenance. Also, governing structure between organizational culture and technical and reliability variables was nominated, which could help companies in physical asset management. Furthermore, eight components of change management were expressed, which are important in order to implement this model.

Originality/value

This model with special consideration of four culture elements can be of great help to industries to reach an optimal point in maintenance and excellence.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the resource-focused view of the firm as a theoretical backdrop, this study aims to examine the relationships between entrepreneurial perceptions and two dependent measures (i.e. customer satisfaction outcomes and firm performance). Specifically, the study tests the boundary conditions of the resource-based view (RBV) performance relationship in a Middle Eastern context.

Design/methodology/approach

The data from 171 female Saudi entrepreneurs are analyzed using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The research results revealed that marketing capability and financial capability (i.e. financial capital access) have a positive significant effect on both dependent measures. Labor shortage also has a negative significant effect on both dependent variables, whereas operations capability does not show a significant effect on the two dependent measures. To a large extent, the results show that the RBV holds true in the Saudi context.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the knowledge about the effects of specific human and financial capital, as well as illuminates how marketing capability, financial capital access and labor shortage impact these dependent variables in the unique context of Saudi Arabia among female entrepreneurs, thereby extending the knowledge of the RBV in different contexts. Furthermore, it extends knowledge of the entrepreneurship literature, especially in the area of gender-based entrepreneurship research in developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify factors that motivate women in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to become self‐employed.

Design/methodology/approach

Different factors, documented in previous research, that affect women's decisions to start their own businesses were included in a questionnaire. A total of 750 women entrepreneurs in the UAE were asked to express the degree of agreement with the factors listed in the questionnaire. Of them, 449 completed the questionnaire.

Findings

Financial support from the government especially in the start‐up capital is an important factor that motivates women to establish their own businesses. Self‐fulfillment, knowledge, skills and experience, including relationship to spouse/father business, are all important factors in the development of women entrepreneurs. Unlike previous research factors such social norms, market network, and competition do not seem to be barriers for women in becoming entrepreneurs.

Research limitations/implications

Questionnaires were mainly distributed in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. To give a clear picture of factors affecting women's decision to start their own businesses in the UAE, the opinion of women located in other Emirates needs to be investigated. The questionnaire survey targeted women entrepreneurs. To give a clear picture, future studies should target women who chose not to start their own businesses.

Practical implications

The outcome of this study will be used by researchers and policy makers to motivate women to become entrepreneurs. Women involvement in developing their businesses provides job opportunities and ensures that women are taking active part in the development of the national economy.

Originality/value

This is the first study that uses empirical evidence to identify factors that motivate women in the UAE to become self‐employed.

Abstract

Purpose

Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease and a growing global health problem. It is estimated that about 200m people are suffering from this disease in the world. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the perceptions and factors influencing the intention to do regular physical activities in order to prevent osteoporosis in Iranian Muslim working women.

Design/methodology/approach

The present cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 217 women employed in a university in Iran. The tool for data collection was a researcher-made questionnaire that had gone through validity and reliability processes. The data analysis was done using SPSS ver. 19 software as well as statistical descriptive and analytical tests.

Findings

The majority of participants were aged 30–39 (50.7 percent) and the least ones were 40 years old (24.4 percent). In total, 67.7 percent of the participants were married. Also, 77 percent of the participants had religious belief on the duty to do strong physical activities, and 83 percent had intention to do physical activities. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mean scores of self-efficacy and the mean scores of religious belief between the women with and without having intention to do physical activities (p<0.01).

Originality/value

Regarding the relationship that self-efficacy and religious belief had with the intention to do physical activities in women employees, the need to address this issue through educational programming with the focus on self-efficacy and religious culture seems to find priority.
