Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to develop low-sodium chevon patties from low-fat emulsion using various salt substitutes (KCl, CaCl2 and mushroom extract) in different combination without affecting the quality of the products.

Design/methodology/approach

Efficacy of salt substitutes was assessed for the development of low-sodium chevon patties. The developed products were assessed for various physicochemical properties, instrumental texture and color profile, estimation of mineral and sensory attributes.

Findings

Significant difference (p < 0.05) in mineral content was observed among the patties developed with different salt blends. Sodium content was reduced to the level of 38.07% in salt-substituted chevon patties. Calcium content was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in LS2, LS3 and LS4 salt-substituted chevon patties. Hardness, gumminess and chewiness values were significantly (p < 0.05) higher, and the springiness value was significantly (p < 0.05) lower in control chevon patties compared to treatments. Flavor and saltiness were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in LS1, LS3 and LS4 compared to control. However, flavor, juiciness and saltiness as well overall acceptability scores for LS2 were superior and widely accepted among the sensory panelists.

Practical implications

Based on sensory attributes and physicochemical properties, it is concluded that LS2 salt blend may suitably be used as excellent salt replacer to develop low-sodium chevon patties.

Originality/value

Innovative findings of the experiment strengthen the current literature available on functional animal food products. Further, it provides one of the important natural alternatives to develop low-sodium meat products with special reference to chevon. Looking to increase attention toward health of the consumer and increase in the risk of cardiovascular diseases, the demand of low-sodium products is very high. Therefore, this may be the excellent choice without affecting the quality and sensory attribute of the products.

Abstract

Purpose

This purpose of this paper was to conduct a study with an aim to reduce the cost of chicken nuggets by replacing part of lean meat with soy flakes. The suitability of chilled paneer whey was also assessed in place of ice water.

Design/methodology/approach

In the development of chicken nuggets, water-soaked soya flakes at the rate of 20 per cent were used in the formulation. The chilled whey at the rate of 8 per cent of the formulation was used to prevent the rise of temperature during emulsion preparation.

Findings

The product prepared in this way gave 5 per cent more yield than normal preparation in which ice water was used. The protein content in the preparation had gone significantly (p < 0.05) higher and moisture significantly (p < 0.05) lower than the normal control. The other proximate composition of chicken nuggets like fat and ash revealed no significant (p > 0.05) change in the product. Initially, thiobarbituric acid value and pH were observed lower in soya flakes-extended nuggets than the control. The overall acceptability was higher, that might be due to good binding and proper emulsion preparations.

Research limitations/implications

Some experiments on amino acid profile and fatty acid profile are also required for further know-how about the actual nutritional status of chicken meat nuggets.

Practical implications

The products will be of immense value for the nutritional supplement and utilization of by-products like whey. It may also be a cost-effective formulation.

Social implications

The products will be acceptable to all commodities because it is made up of chicken meat.

Originality/value

The cost of the formulation was also lower than the chicken nuggets used without soya flakes and whey because cost of meat was greater than the soya. The whey produced in paneer production costs less or by-product rich in protein materials can be better utilized into valuable products. The developed product seems to have great applications in the food industry and acceptability among consumers.

After working through the case, the students should be able to understand Indian political economy and the brand building process of NaMo; identify the media mix strategies used to build the brand NaMo in India; evaluate possible future growth strategies for brand NaMo; and compare and contrast brand NaMo with business brands.

Case overview/synopsis

Narendra Modi popularly called as NaMo was the current Prime Minister of India. He belonged to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) which won India’s general elections in two consecutive terms 2014 and 2019. NaMo was recognised worldwide for his prudence in leading the country to greater heights of achievement. NaMo started his political journey as the worker of BJP at a tender age. His rise in political career was akin to flagship brand overtaking the parent brand. All the steps taken in the past to position himself as a cult brand, will it fortify to NaMo’s victory in 2024 general elections? Business firms may follow NaMo’s strategies. What can the business brands emulate from NaMo to market and position themselves? Can political success be transpired to business success?

Complexity academic level

This case is designed for use in a graduate-/postgraduate-level marketing course in segments on brand management, brand expansion and the marketing strategies of a market leader. The case can also be used in a brand management course to discuss brand management models (e.g. Keller’s brand resonance pyramid and brand value chain). This case has particular application for classes that focus on brand equity, STP for any brand (segmentation, targeting and positioning) and brand value chain. The case looks in detail at the Indian political market and brand building process of NaMo and examines competitive moves since its inception. This case can be used in brand management, media management courses. The dilemma can be explained as part of a marketing course for postgraduate and executive programmes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a practical design methodology of high-power wideband power amplifier.

Design/methodology/approach

The distributed power amplification method is used for a Gallium Nitride device to achieve wideband operation. To achieve the high power without trading-off the bandwidth and gain, a methodology to extract the package-loading effect is proposed and verified.

Findings

A maximum output power of 10 W is achieved from 100 MHz to 2 GHz with a wideband power gain of 32 dB in measurement. This performance is achieved through a single section matching network.

Research limitations/implications

Measurement accuracy is dependable to the thermal behaviour of the high-power device.

Practical implications

The proposed technique is an excellent solution to be used in the two way radio power amplifier that minimizes the fundamental trade-off issue between power, gain, bandwidth and efficiency.

Originality/value

In this work, a practical distributed power amplifier (DPA) design methodology is proposed that reduces the development cycle time for industrial engineers working on high-power circuit design application.

Abstract

Background: Insurance was discovered many centuries before Christ (BC). In the second and third millennia BC, Chinese and Babylonian traders traded risks. Insurance is now the backbone of the economy, but penetration is low in developing countries. Big data, internet of things (IoT), and InsurTech have recently ushered in the fourth industrial revolution in insurance.

Objective: This study examines the Indian challenges and solutions of using Big Data Analytics (BDA).

methodology: A SLR was used to extract themes/variables related to challenges and solutions in adopting BDA in the Indian insurance sector. Google Scholar was searched for relevant literature using keywords. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to filter the studies.

Findings: This study identified several barriers to BDA adoption in the Indian insurance industry. Policymakers could use the suggestions to improve insurance service delivery.

Practical implication: Insurers can understand the challenges, and accordingly, they can adopt the proposed solution in this study to enhance the insurance penetration in India.

Purpose: This paper aims to reveal the impact of the pandemic Covid-19 on the banking and financial sector. Covid-19 is a pandemic disease that’s impacting all nations. However, its amount varies from one country to another depending on the country’s social and economic infrastructure progress. The whole world is passing through great improbability. Indian economy is also facing equivalent issues from contraction in growth to rising inflation, unemployment and low demand. Covid-19 has impacted all industries worldwide, and the financial service sector is not any exception. Covid-19, which began as a health crisis, has now been appropriated as a financial one.

Methodology: This study intends to showcase various new developments in the banking sector. In the present scenario, banks are focusing on utilising new technological innovations to reinforce their risk management competence. Since the aim is to analyse various latest developments in the banking sector and its impact during Covid-19, the focus is to collect the relevant and supporting material from every possible secondary source. To attain the main aim of this paper, the data are collected using secondary sources, i.e. data from the annual reports of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Security Exchange Board of India, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank and various others sources. This is taken care of on the primary basis that the reliable and authentic sources are incorporated in this study. Since the study scope is limited to analysing the new developments in the banking sector due to Covid-19, the maximum literature available to attain the paper’s objective is from 2020 to 2021.

Findings: The banking sector is among the most crucial sectors of the Indian economy, which is accountable for almost every financial activity possibly happening within the country. It acts as a holding hand to the industry involved in credit, transactions, collection, etc. With the disruption of supply chains across the globe, numerous physical business places are closed. Banks are the backbone of the economy. Their stability is critical to continue the system up and to run.

Practical implications: The banking sector aims to supply funding to anyone, say corporate or individuals. The decelerate pace can guide prospective job losses, ground stress in banks’ retail loan books. The banks should design a plan to shield employees and their customers from its spread. It has hit the scope to individuals, small- and medium-sized enterprises, and large corporate. The only obvious thing is that every group has faced an income crunch that threatens economic and financial market permanence.

Significance: The relevance of this study stands on the fact that Covid-19 has begun as a health crisis, quickly extended into a business crisis. This is often not only a health crisis but also depression. The outbreak of Covid-19 has created a huge impact on nations. The nationwide lockdowns have almost faded social and economic life. The global economy was hit hard by the continued coronavirus. The whole world is passing through great uncertainty. As a result, various services sectors, banking sectors, and financial services have suffered through various ups and downs, resulting in economic stress. The uncertain and risky environment has had a severe impact on banks’ asset quality. The coronavirus outburst influenced financial markets and consumer emotions as well.

Abstract

Purpose

Social health insurance framework of any country is the national identifier of the country’s policy for taking care of its population which cannot access or afford quality healthcare. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the strategic imperatives of digital technology for the inclusive social health models for the BoP customers.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative exploratory study using in-depth personal interviews with 53 Indian health insurance CXOs was conducted with a semi-structured questionnaire. Using MaxQDA software, the interview transcripts were analyzed by means of thematic content analysis technique and patterns identified based on the expert opinions.

Findings

A framework for the strategic imperatives of digital technology in social health insurance emerged from the study highlighting three key themes for technology implementation in the social health insurance sector – analytics for risk management, cost optimization for operations and enhancement of customer experience. The study results provide key insights about how insurers can enhance the coverage of BoP population by leveraging technology.

Social implications

The framework would help health insurers and policymakers to select strategic choices related to technology that would enable creation of inclusive health insurance models for BoP customers.

Originality/value

The absence of specific studies highlighting the strategic digital imperatives in social health insurance creates a unique value proposition for this framework which can help health insurers in developing a convergence in their risk management and customer delight objectives and assist the government in the formulation of a sustainable social health insurance framework.

Abstract

Purpose

Globalisation has benefitted both developed and emerging markets. However, few recent studies have pointed out that globalisation has failed to deliver promising results. This research aims to examine the impact of globalisation on different performance aspects of an emerging market like India.

Design/methodology/approach

We examined the impact of globalisation on different performance aspects of a country at the national, industry and firm levels. We have defined the performance dimensions for country-level analysis as GDP and unemployment. We have defined the performance dimensions as profitability for industry and firm-level analysis. The effects of globalisation on the critical economic performance aspects in the Indian setting are covered in the first part. In the second part, we used the panel regression approach to evaluate the impact of overseas revenue on the employability and profitability of select Indian auto firms. We have chosen the auto industry for industry analysis because of its extensive integration with other production fields. In the third section, we discussed how globalisation has improved the profitability of two Indian car companies.

Findings

This study finds that globalisation has benefitted nearly every aspect of the Indian economy's performance. India has gained from national, industry and firm globalisation.

Originality/value

This study is the first of its kind to examine the impact of globalisation on a country's performance across different levels, including national, industry and firm levels. We have studied the Indian context to develop a theory that globalisation still benefits emerging markets.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aim to comparatively study of mechanical properties of gamma radiation treated raw and polyethylene glycol modified bleached jute reinforced polyester composite. The natural fiber-reinforced composite has been a wide area of research, and it is the preferred choice due to its superior physical and mechanical properties like low density, stiffness and light weight. Among several natural fibers, jute is one that has good potential as reinforcement in polymer composite. Jute fibers biodegradability, low cost and moderate mechanical properties make it as a preferable reinforcement material in the development of polymer matrix composites.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present work, raw jute fabrics-reinforced polyester composite (as RJPC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified bleached jute fabrics-reinforced polyester composite (as MBJPC) were fabricated by the heat-press molding technique at 120°C for 5 min at a pressure of 5 tons. Prior to the composite formulation, low lignin content bleached jute fabrics were chemically modified with PEG for the better compatibility of the fabrics with the polyester matrix and enhancing elongation properties. All the composites irradiated with different gamma radiation dose in the range of 2 to 14 kGy.

Findings

The irradiated composites showed highest improved of mechanical properties at the 10 kGy γ-radiation dose. However, the hard and sunlight-sensitive high lignin content γ-RJPC showed higher mechanical properties except elongation properties compared to that of low lignin content γ-MBJPC.

Originality/value

After the γ-ray irradiation, both the γ-RJPC and γ-MBJPC developed high degree of cross-linking among the polyester molecules and thereto fabrics with the consequence of significant changed of surface morphology as observed by atomic force microscopy.

Abstract

Purpose

The building sector contributes one-third of the energy-related carbon dioxide globally. Therefore, framing appropriate energy-related policies for the next decades becomes essential in this scenario to realize the global net-zero goals. The purpose of the proposed study is to evaluate the impact of the widespread adoption of such guidelines in a building community in the context of mixed-mode buildings.

Design/methodology/approach

This study decentralizes the theme of improving the energy efficiency of the national building stock in parcels by proposing a community-based hybrid bottom-up modelling approach using urban building energy modelling (UBEM) techniques to analyze the effectiveness of the community-wide implementation of energy conservation guidelines.

Findings

In this study, the UBEM is developed and validated for the 14-building residential community in Mumbai, India, adopting the framework. Employing Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) compliance on the UBEM shows an energy use reduction potential of up to 15%. The results also reveal that ECBC compliance is more advantageous considering the effects of climate change.

Originality/value

In developing countries where the availability of existing building stock information is minimal, the proposed study formulates a holistic framework for developing a detailed UBEM for the residential building stock from scratch. A unique method of assessing the actual cooling load of the developed UBEM is presented. A thorough sensitivity analysis approach to investigate the effect of cooling space fraction on the energy consumption of the building stock is presented, which would assist in choosing the appropriate retrofit strategies. The proposed study's outcomes can significantly transform the formulation and validation of appropriate energy policies.
