As CD‐ROM becomes more and more a standard reference and technical support tool in all types of libraries, the annual review of this technology published in Computers in Libraries magazine increases in size and scope. This year, author Susan L. Adkins has prepared this exceptionally useful bibliography which she has cross‐referenced with a subject index.

We are in the midst of a major technology shift. The Internet holds the promise of radically changing not only the medium of future information, from paper to computer screens, but the structure of many of our most important institutions as well.

The purpose of this article is to advocate for a broader discussion of potential needs for better communication and theory in the areas of technological adoption, management and application in libraries and information centers.

From personal readings, reflection, experience and the insights of others in the field, the paper considers movements in the larger library and information science (LIS) theoretical literature and its potential application to technology issues.

The past five years have seen irreversible changes in the computer and information industries. The last COMDEX trade show (Fall, 2002) reflects the emphasis on next‐generation computer technology, DIY setting‐up systems with consequent lower pay for the professionals, globalization, lower return on investment, stifling of innovation and creativity – all adding up to a depressing future for the industry.

The selection and evaluation of CD‐ROM disks are important steps in the planning of a CD‐ROM facility. The choice of databases depends upon, among other factors, the objectives of the library, the projected use of each disk, and financial considerations. In this article we review the literature that deals with these matters. We begin with what is available on disk selection, via both printed directories and in the journals. We next discuss reported methods of disk evaluation. Finally, we cover existing reviews of various CD‐ROM products.

To provide a snapshot picture of the current e‐book industry from the perspectives of various key individuals in the industry.

Over 20 interviews were conducted following an extensive review of the published literature and examination of product/technical information.

The interviews revealed varying opinions on the current state of the industry and even on the definition of the e‐book industry itself. Key issues identified include: standards, digital rights management, content availability, pricing, device/reader technology, integration and market development.

This industry is still relatively young, generally marking its beginnings in 2000; however, its early years have been marked by market hype, investor fallout and slow market development. Today's industry is at a pivotal point: can obstacles to maturity be overcome or will the industry be either subsumed by the larger consumer electronics or web‐based industries?

Information professionals may find these perspectives useful in framing their own applications of e‐book technology in their planning for future technology, collections and services.

The interviews, generally conducted with the understanding that comments and other key competitive information would remain unattributed, provide an insider's look at a technology and industry developing in a larger arena of rapid technological and market change.

Citation and ranking information are becoming key aspects of knowledge management in academic and research institutions. By examining changing user needs and products, this paper aims to encourage information professionals to better understand and manage these resources and better respond to user needs.

Literature reviews, work with faculty clients and initial product testing are used to present coherent information on the current climate and practice of competitive analysis of researchers and their institutions.

As more sources for citation information have become available – even many scholarly databases today offering cited reference data – the need to identify, access and manage these resources is becoming acute. Information professionals need to become more proactive in their strategies to support these applications and users.

Because blended working options have emerged and varied technological devices are being used during lockdowns, it is necessary to examine the working and learning options in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pros and cons of hybrid (blended) working and learning are highlighted.

An extended search of literature online, and also of examples of blended learning and working instituted in some libraries, archives and museums was carried out over a period of three weeks.

Findings indicated that adjustments to the hybrid working and learning situations had to be made by staff and students in heritage institutions. Provision of more digital content and the adoption of machine learning models were the solutions proffered, with indications that the tools for the blended learning implementation be provided. Reskilling of staff due to new technologies being introduced is recommended.
