Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to explore the proposition that diversifying the board in terms of gender, ethnicity or skill base may require consideration of the specific strategic environment of the organisation. The proposition arises from the question as to whether or not greater diversity in board configuration is desirable in certain circumstances and considers the group dynamics, skill mix and capabilities that are required by boards under different conditions of change and strategic complexity.

Design/methodology/approach

The study examines the financial performance of New Zealand publicly listed companies over a five‐year period and focuses on changes in board composition, strategic activity and implications for corporate performance.

Findings

The study finds limited support for the idea that board configuration, strategic context and corporate decision quality may be linked.

Originality/value

This paper will be of particular value to those involved in the appointment of directors within the private and public sectors. In particular, it focuses discussion on the strategic environment faced by the organisation and the relevance of a range of potential selection criteria when appointing new directors. It is also of interest to researchers evaluating the value of social capital and gender equity in contemporary organisations as, based on empirical reseach, it challenges conventional thinking. By implication, the paper also questions whether or not boards are actually able to influence key outcomes in the manner expected by legislators.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate how country risk, different political actions from the government and bureaucratic behavior influence the activities in industry supply chains (SCs) in emerging markets. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of these external stakeholders’ elements to the demand-side and supply-side drivers and barriers for improving competitiveness of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry in the way of analyzing supply chain. Considering the phenomenon of recent change in the RMG business environment and the competitiveness issues this study uses the principles of stakeholder and resource dependence theory and aims to find out some factors which influence to make an efficient supply chain for improving competitiveness. The RMG industry of Bangladesh is the case application of this study. Following a positivist paradigm, this study adopts a two phase sequential mixed-method research design consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches. A tentative research model is developed first based on extensive literature review. Qualitative field study is then carried out to fine tune the initial research model. Findings from the qualitative method are also used to develop measures and instruments for the next phase of quantitative method. A survey is carried out with sample of top and middle level executives of different garment companies of Dhaka city in Bangladesh and the collected quantitative data are analyzed by partial least square-based structural equation modeling. The findings support eight hypotheses. From the analysis the external stakeholders’ elements like bureaucratic behavior and country risk have significant influence to the barriers. From the internal stakeholders’ point of view the manufacturers’ and buyers’ drivers have significant influence on the competitiveness. Therefore, stakeholders need to take proper action to reduce the barriers and increase the drivers, as the drivers have positive influence to improve competitiveness.

This study has both theoretical and practical contributions. This study represents an important contribution to the theory by integrating two theoretical perceptions to identify factors of the RMG industry’s SC that affect the competitiveness of the RMG industry. This research study contributes to the understanding of both external and internal stakeholders of national and international perspectives in the RMG (textile and clothing) business. It combines the insights of stakeholder and resource dependence theories along with the concept of the SC in improving effectiveness. In a practical sense, this study certainly contributes to the Bangladeshi RMG industry. In accordance with the desire of the RMG manufacturers, the research has shown that some influential constructs of the RMG industry’s SC affect the competitiveness of the RMG industry. The outcome of the study is useful for various stakeholders of the Bangladeshi RMG industry sector ranging from the government to various private organizations. The applications of this study are extendable through further adaptation in other industries and various geographic contexts.

Abstract

Board configuration is discussed in the context of the perceived needs of the board as a strategic resource of the organization. This is highlighted in the context of the differing governance, performance and social requirements of organizations pertaining to private sector, state and local government ownership structures. Examined is the view that in bringing particular perspectives resulting from their professional, ethnic or gender backgrounds, directors contribute to board effectiveness. This notion is evaluated in terms of directors’ coping devices and their perceptions of their ability to be heard on the board. Initiatives that boards may use to ensure the success of such appointments are highlighted. Consideration is also given to enhancing the dynamics of established but dysfunctional appointments. In concluding, the paper develops criteria for success in making board appointments where the prospective appointee is a minority in terms of professional discipline or other forms of diversity.

Abstract

Since the implementation of the Motor Industry Development Programme in 1995, South African motor manufacturers have had to face pressures and challenges to which they had not been accustomed in a very protected environment. These pressures include ever‐intensifying competition, which necessitates increased competitiveness with regard to quality and price. As locally built cars can compete with the best in terms of quality, the primary area of concern for survival has shifted to international competitiveness with regard to price. This research project comprised a literature study and an empirical survey of the developments in the management accounting used by the seven major local motor manufacturers, which together have a 90,8% share of the local market. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made regarding the implementation and improvement of the contemporary management accounting techniques that are used in the South African motor manufacturing industry. The aim of the project was to contribute towards target pricing, which could result in the increased profitability and competitiveness of the local industry in a highly competitive global market and at a market‐based price.

Abstract

In the light of the acceleration in the international and local information and knowledge revolution, the University of Stellenbosch (US) has introduced an e‐learning strategy to gain maximum benefit from the developments in information technology. In support of this strategy, the US has implemented WebCT as an electronic course management system. Subsequent consultations have revealed doubt among accounting lecturers and students about the effectiveness of WebCT assessment of tests in Financial Accounting. The purpose of the study was therefore to investigate this perception on the basis of the available literature, our own experience, categories of student learning and feedback from students. The WebCT assessment function was also contrasted with traditional assessment methods. It was concluded that although WebCT is not a quick fix, it could be implemented successfully in bigger classes, provided that innovative lecturers are responsible for these classes.

Abstract

Purpose

Current solutions for monitoring the progress of pavement construction (such as collecting, processing and analysing data) are inefficient, labour-intensive, time-consuming, tedious and error-prone. In this study, an automated solution proposes sensors prototype mounted unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) for data collection, an LSTM classifier for road layer detection, the integrated algorithm for as-built progress calculation and web-based as-built reporting.

Design/methodology/approach

The crux of the proposed solution, the road layer detection model, is proposed to develop from the layer change detection model and rule-based reasoning. In the beginning, data were gathered using a UGV with a laser ToF (time-of-flight) distance sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope and GPS sensor in a controlled environment. The long short-term memory (LSTM) algorithm was utilised on acquired data to develop a classifier model for layer change detection, such as layer not changed, layer up and layer down.

Findings

In controlled environment experiments, the classification of road layer changes achieved 94.35% test accuracy with 14.05% loss. Subsequently, the proposed approach, including the layer detection model, as-built measurement algorithm and reporting, was successfully implemented with a real case study to test the robustness of the model and measure the as-built progress.

Research limitations/implications

The implementation of the proposed framework can allow continuous, real-time monitoring of road construction projects, eliminating the need for manual, time-consuming methods. This study will potentially help the construction industry in the real time decision-making process of construction progress monitoring and controlling action.

Originality/value

This first novel approach marks the first utilization of sensors mounted UGV for monitoring road construction progress, filling a crucial research gap in incremental and segment-wise construction monitoring and offering a solution that addresses challenges faced by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and 3D reconstruction. Utilizing UGVs offers advantages like cost-effectiveness, safety and operational flexibility in no-fly zones.

Abstract

Fieldwork is one of the hallmarks of anthropology. Almost all students of anthropology have geographical and cultural specializations, ranging from a small group to a nation. Their interest areas are often identified or marked by real or putative boundaries; and it is within these boundaries that anthropologists have “founded” their own villages and tribes — “my village”, “my tribe.”
