Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming and powder metallurgy are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on the subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for the last five years, and more than 1100 references are listed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the behavior of salicylidene‐NN′‐dimorpholine as a corrosion inhibitor for zinc in hydrochloric acid and the mechanism of its action.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of various parameters on the behavior of this inhibitor have been studied using weight loss, galvanostatic polarization, and cathodic protection methods. Thermodynamic parameters and adsorption data also were utilized.

Findings

The inhibitor showed excellent corrosion inhibition (>99 percent) at effective concentration. It appeared from thermodynamic parameters that an efficient inhibitor is characterized by a relatively greater decrease (i.e. more negative) in free energy of adsorption (ΔGA°), positive values of entropy of adsorption (ΔSA°), and lower heat of adsorption (QA). Galvanostatic polarization data indicate that this is a “mixed” type inhibitor with predominant effect on the cathode. The inhibitor followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm behavior. The cathodic protection indicated that the conjoint action of the inhibitor and the cathodic current was either synergistic or additive.

Originality/value

Very few inhibitors exhibit such excellent inhibitive effect on zinc in aggressive corrosive media as is shown in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

A survey of technical literature indicates that there is a shortage of excellent corrosion inhibitors for zinc in non‐oxidizing acids, particularly sulphuric acid. This paper aims to describe the behaviour of ethylenediamine‐NN′‐dibenzylidene, ethylenediamine‐NN′‐disalicylidene, ethylenediamine‐NN′‐dicinnamylidene, triethylenetetramine tribenzylidene and triethylenetetramine trisalicylidene as corrosion inhibitors for zinc in sulphuric acid solutions. The objective of this research work also is to have an insight into the action mechanism of these inhibitors.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of the various parameters affecting the action of the above‐mentioned corrosion inhibitors has been studied using weight‐loss data and polarisation measurements. Adsorption data also were utilized.

Findings

The inhibitors showed excellent corrosion inhibition (>99 per cent) at effective inhibitor concentrations. The two salicylidenes were better corrosion inhibitors than were corresponding benzylidenes. It appeared from this study that an efficient inhibitor is characterised by a relatively greater decrease in free energy of adsorption, lower entropy of adsorption and relatively lower heat of adsorption. Basically, these inhibitors were cathodic, as was revealed by polarisation data, and the inhibitors followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm behaviour. In general, the conjoint action of the inhibitor and the cathodic current was synergistic.

Research limitations/implications

Powerful Schiff bases still need to be synthesized so as to be effective at extremely low concentrations. The behaviour with other metals and alloys in diverse media also requires to be investigated.

Originality/value

Very few inhibitors demonstrate such excellent corrosion inhibition of zinc in aggressive corrosive media. Such detailed investigations on corrosion inhibitors are unusual.

Abstract

Purpose

Fluid flows through rotatory disks are encountered in industrial and practical engineering processes, such as computer storage devices, gas turbine rotators, rotating machinery, air cleaning machines, etc. The primary purpose of this research is to examine the combined aspects of variable electrical conductivity, thermal radiation, Soret and Dufour effects on a magnetohydrodynamic Maxwell single-walled carbon nanotubes–graphene oxide–multi-walled carbon nanotubes–copper (SWCNT–GO–MWCNT–Cu)/sodium alginate tetra-hybrid nanofluid flow through a stretchable rotatory disk.

Design/methodology/approach

The modeled administrative equations of the present flow problem are converted to a non-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity conversion and then solved numerically by implementing the bvp4c method. The impressions of noteworthy dimensionless parameters on velocity, temperature, concentration distributions, Nusselt number, skin friction and Sherwood number are reported via graphs and tables.

Findings

The authors figured out that the developed values of the rotation parameter diminish the temperature but enhance both the radial and angular velocities. Further, the mass and heat transmission rates are better for tetra-hybrid nanofluids than for ternary and hybrid nanofluids.

Originality/value

The present study emphasizes a special type of fluid called the tetra-hybrid nanofluid. The existing literature has not discussed the Maxwell tetra hybrid nanofluid flow through a stretchable rotatory disk with variable electrical conductivity. Besides, the novel aspects of magnetohydrodynamics, thermal radiation, Soret and Dufour effects are also incorporated into the present flow problem.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain technology (BCT) can play a vital role in manufacturing industries by providing visibility and real-time transparency. With BCT adoption, manufacturers can achieve higher productivity, better quality, flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The current study aims to prioritize the performance metrics and ranking of enablers that may influence the adoption of BCT in manufacturing industries through a hybrid framework.

Design/methodology/approach

Through an extensive literature review, 4 major criteria with 26 enablers were identified. Pythagorean fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to compute the weights of the enablers and the Pythagorean fuzzy combined compromise solution (Co-Co-So) method was used to prioritize the 17-performance metrics. Sensitivity analysis was then carried out to check the robustness of the developed framework.

Findings

According to the results, data security enablers were the most significant among the major criteria, followed by technology-oriented enablers, sustainability and human resources and quality-related enablers. Further, the ranking of performance metrics shows that data hacking complaints per year, data storage capacity and number of advanced technologies available for BCT are the top three important performance metrics. Framework robustness was confirmed by sensitivity analysis.

Practical implications

The developed framework will contribute to understanding and simplifying the BCT implementation process in manufacturing industries to a significant level. Practitioners and managers may use the developed framework to facilitate BCT adoption and evaluate the performance of the manufacturing system.

Originality/value

This study can be considered as the first attempt to the best of the author’s knowledge as no such hybrid framework combining enablers and performance indicators was developed earlier.

Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of research and developments relating to the use of Web 2.0 technologies in education. As opposed to early educational uses of the Internet involving publication of static information on web pages, Web 2.0 tools offer a host of opportunities for educators to provide more interactive, collaborative, and creative online learning experiences for students. The chapter starts by defining Web 2.0 tools in terms of their ability to facilitate online creation, editing, and sharing of web content. A typology of Web 2.0 technologies is presented to illustrate the wide variety of tools at teachers’ disposal. Educational uses of Web 2.0 technologies such as wikis, blogs, and microblogging are explored, in order to showcase the variety of designs that can be utilized. Based on a review of the research literature the educational benefits of using Web 2.0 technologies are outlined, including their ability to facilitate communication, collaborative knowledge building, student-centered activity, and vicarious learning. Similarly, issues surrounding the use of Web 2.0 tools are distilled from the literature and discussed, such as the possibility of technical problems, collaboration difficulties, and plagiarism. Two case studies involving the use Web 2.0 tools to support personalized learning and small group collaboration are detailed to exemplify design possibilities in greater detail. Finally, design recommendations for learning and teaching using Web 2.0 are presented, again based on findings from the research literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to attempt to highlight various approaches for enhancing the viability of probiotics, with special emphasis on micro‐encapsulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Various techniques, such as selection of acid and bile resistant strains, use of oxygen impermeable packaging materials, two‐step fermentation, stress adaptation, inclusion of micro‐nutrient, sonication of bacteria and micro‐encapsulation, which could be employed for maintaining or enhancing probiotic viability are discussed, with special emphasis on micro‐encapsulation.

Findings

Probiotics lose their viability during gastro‐intestinal transit due to unfavorable intestinal environment. Amongst diverse techniques micro‐encapsulation could confer protection to the probiotics both in the product as well as in the gastro‐intestinal environment.

Originality/value

The paper shows that micro‐encapsulation of probiotics renders them stable both in the product as well as in the intestinal environment and application of encapsulated probiotics would result in a product with greater prophylactic activities.

Abstract

Purpose

The evaluation of Schiff bases derived from o‐, m‐ and p‐aminophenols and salicylaldehyde as corrosion inhibitors of zinc in sulfuric acid and to study their action mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of various parameters on the behaviour of these inhibitors has been studied using the weight loss and polarization measurements.

Findings

In general, the ortho isomer was highly effective as a corrosion inhibitor because it formed a chelate with a six‐membered ring and moreover the ortho isomer possessed pronounced electromeric effect. These inhibitors obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The almost constant performance with temperature in the case of ortho and para isomers in 0.5 M sulfuric acid suggested strong adsorption bonds. The thermodynamic parameters suggested that this strong interaction of the inhibitor molecules with the metal surface resulted in spontaneous adsorption. It may be concluded that a good inhibitor is characterised by a relatively greater decrease in free energy of adsorption, lower entropy of adsorption and higher heat of adsorption. Polarization data indicated that all these isomers were predominantly cathodic inhibitors. The conjoint effect of external cathodic current and these inhibitors was either synergistic or additive.

Research limitations/implications

Even more powerful Schiff bases need to be synthesised and evaluated as corrosion inhibitors with a number of metals and alloys in diverse media, which may be effective at low concentrations.

Originality/value

Very few inhibitors exhibit such excellent inhibitive effect on zinc in aggressive corrosive media. Rarely do we find such detailed studies.
