Abstract

This article reviews the quantitative marketing literature on artificial intelligence (AI) through an economics lens. We apply the framework in Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence to systematically categorize 96 research papers on AI in marketing academia into five levels of impact, which are prediction, decision, tool, strategy, and society. For each paper, we further identify each individual component of a task, the research question, the AI model used, and the broad decision type. Overall, we find there are fewer marketing papers focusing on strategy and society, and accordingly, we discuss future research opportunities in those areas.

Abstract

This paper describes quantitative and qualitative research undertaken at the University of Sussex Library. The research was concerned to investigate the behaviour and motivations that led Library users to give puzzling responses in a user survey into book availability. The responses concerned the Library's Reserve Collection of key course texts. Hence the paper firstly sets out to describe the user survey, and then goes on to give an account of the qualitative research methodology employed to look beyond the survey results. This methodology involved semi‐structured interviews with students and tutors, which were analysed with the help of the software package QSR NUD*1st. The research uncovered interesting and useful information relating to the way Library users approach the Library service, a summary of which is included in the paper. The research methodology was found to be a valuable addition to the information gathering strategies of Library management, revealing patterns of user attitudes that are difficult if not impossible to access using traditional survey techniques alone.

A STUDY of the flow in the immediate neighbourhood of the surface of a wing or body has often provided an explanation of apparent inconsistencies in the evidence obtained from tests in different wind tunnels or from model and full scale experiments. It is of the highest importance in investigations of critical changes in aerodynamic forces such as occur when a wing stalls, of interference effects and of oscillatory motions caused wholly or partially by aerodynamic forces.

Abstract

The methodology and findings are presented of an empirical study comparing local citation patterns with the holdings lists of a number of sources of journal articles. These sources were the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) and the BL inside service, library holdings, ProQuest Direct, SearchBank, EiText and a linking system including both the Geobase database and the BLDSC. The value of local citation figures is discussed, as is the concept of a “core” of journal titles, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Using these figures to represent the local use of journal articles, the coverage of the document sources was found to vary widely. Unsurprisingly, the BLDSC was found to offer the widest coverage. Newer, electronic systems generally fared less well, but may offer other advantages.

Abstract

Hitherto, wing flutter has been investigated on the simplifying assumption that the fuselage is not set in oscillation by the flutter of the wings. Strictly, however, the fuselage and wings form a single dynamical system, all parts of which must participate to some extent in any vibration. Thus the critical speed at which instability develops in actual flight will be influenced by the mobility of the fuselage, and the object of the present investigation is to find the importance of the effect.

Abstract

This paper describes the methodology and results of a study designed to compare figures derived from a questionnaire‐based book availability survey technique and from computer records of the use of the library's computer catalogue. Although several important differences emerge between the two sets of data, it is concluded that within specific limits the computer monitoring technique could act as a surrogate for book availability surveys.
