Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to present a new solution algorithm for updating of finite element models in structural dynamics. A random search method is applied to improving the correlation between the numerical simulation and the measured experimental data.

Design/methodology/approach

Dynamic finite element model updating may be considered as an optimization process. It is solved using modified accelerated random search (MARS) algorithm. The effectiveness of the approach is first tested on benchmark problems. Next, several objective function formulations for dynamic model updating in modal and frequency domains are investigated for numerically simulated vibrating beam. Finally, the algorithm is applied to a real beam‐like structure using measured modal data.

Findings

The MARS algorithm is able to provide very good results in a reduced time even for hard optimization problems. It behaves very well also for the FE dynamic model updating, highly coupled problems. The efficient updating criterion has been proposed and the approach has been validated experimentally.

Research limitations/implications

The method is supposed to be time consuming for large size or complicated objective function problems but the choice of optimization parameters can accelerate the convergence.

Practical implications

The MARS algorithm can be applied to model updating in civil and mechanical engineering.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to apply the MARS algorithm to the problem of FE model updating in dynamics and enables one to obtain very good results. Efficient criteria for model updating have been proposed.

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the internal airline market in the Maghreb and examines the determinants of intra-Maghreb air traffic flows. Most accounts of recent developments in the air transport markets in Africa have focused on the Continent as a whole and to some extent on Eastern and Southern African countries. Previous analysis of air transportation in the Maghreb has involved origins and destinations outside of the region. The analysis of domestic and intra-Maghreb traffic shows that the greatest share of traffic is concentrated on routes linking capital cities and commercial centers. Most intra-Maghreb flights are indirect, with some domestic and intraregional flights transferring through European airports. Here, a gravity equation is used to estimate the volume of traffic between Maghreb countries in relation to a wide set of factors. The results suggest that key determinants of air intra-Maghreb air traffic demand are generally in line with findings in other markets, including those involving GDP, fares, conflicts, visa openness, trade, and the quality of airline services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a new maturity model to identify the current state of maintenance area of organizations and drives actions to increase efficiency and effectiveness toward the concept known as world-class.

Design/methodology/approach

The model was developed based on an extensive literature review on maintenance management and maturity assessment, which allowed identifying the relevant factors in maintenance management and the world-class behaviors for each factor. The progressive maturity levels for each of the identified ten factors form the model. To test its effectiveness, it was applied to the maintenance area of three companies.

Findings

The model application showed that, in addition to being a self-assessment tool, it provides knowledge, to those who use it, on behaviors or practices that enable world-class results. For each factor, potential gaps and the desired state were defined focusing on behaviors rather than on indicators values or adopted methodologies, which facilitates the identification of improvement actions that lead to better performance.

Research limitations/implications

Through its use, maturity levels can be identified for all considered maintenance management factors, however, the overall maturity of the maintenance area is not determined. Although this overall evaluation can be done assigning a weight to each factor, it was not considered an added value for the set purpose.

Originality/value

The proposed maturity model contributes to the understanding of the maintenance management process and how to stand out nowadays in an area that has an increasingly important impact on productivity and quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design a case study to explore how a mining and construction company, located in the Zambian Copperbelt, practices corporate social responsibility (CSR), which has a vital role to play in the mining industry because of its importance in a range of areas including: the local economy, avoiding a negative impact on the environment and society and occupational safety. This is especially true in the developing parts of the world. Numerous initiatives, guidelines and tools have been made available for CSR practice but very little is known about the usefulness of the new CSR-standard International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 26000.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study was designed to explore how a mining and construction company, located in the Zambian Copperbelt, practices CSR within the health area and to discuss the possible merits of ISO 26000 for CSR development in the mining industry in the developing world.

Findings

Our findings show that, despite the fact that ISO 26000 is primarily a series of guidelines, it can be used to evaluate and improve a company’s CSR practice even if that company is already considered as a frontrunner within CSR. The standard can give valuable advice when designing community development programs and allocating the use of charity donations. Further, our study has shown that traditional management systems based on occupational health and safety standard 18001 and ISO 14001 can rather effectively support actions and expectations in ISO 26000.

Research limitations/implications

The research context is Zambia, so there might be limitations when applying the results to other cultural and geographical settings.

Practical implications

The paper is a useful source of information about the practical implementation of CSR within the health area.

Originality/value

Much of the literature within the field of practical implementation of CSR is focusing on the philanthropic activities. This paper brings more information about practical implementation of CSR in core corporate business.
