Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the colour stability and water content resistivity of the green colour coating paint film (consisting of chlorophyll) during exposure to ultraviolet A (UV-A).

Design/methodology/approach

The natural green dye was prepared by immersing Cassia alata L. leaves in absolute ethanol. The extract was prepared in two batches of dye samples where one of it was a pure dye and the other was added with 3 Wt. % Cu(NO3)2 as an additive. Polymer blend as a binder was prepared by mixing poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and commercial acrylic polyol. The blended polymer was mixed with the natural dye in a specific ratio and applied as coating paint film on glass panel surfaces. The visible spectrum stability (colour stability) and water content resistivity of the coating paint films during exposure to UV-A were monitored.

Findings

Addition of Cu(NO3)2 had improved the colour stability of the coating paint film. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that both coating paint films do not absorb water and are resistive to water content.

Research limitations/implications

The ability of Cu(NO3)2 as an colour stability additive to the natural green dye applied in the coating paint film.

Practical implications

The coating paint film developed in this work is suitable to be applied on glass substrates.

Originality/value

The colour stability of the coating paint film was analysed by using the reflectance spectrum.

Abstract

The chapter discusses Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with appropriate theoretical framings with the intent of creating a deeper understanding and application of CSR theories in Ibero-America’s hospitality industry. The research method is a qualitative research approach relying on critical review of scholarly articles on CSR theories. The sourced articles were critically discussed and analysed to fit the needs of the hospitality industry in Ibero-America. The shareholder/agency, stakeholder, legitimacy, instrumental, social contract, conflict, green and communication theories were identified as the eight dominant theories of CSR with diverse applications in the hospitality industry. The CSR theories discussed are not exhaustive, as there are emerging theories that explicate CSR in different contexts. The implication is that better understanding and application of CSR theories would strengthen conceptual, theoretical and empirical research in Ibero-America. The CSR theories are useful sources of information for practitioners for designing corporate CSR policies as well as providing scholars with sound theoretical framework for academic research. The chapter is a novel attempt at bridging theory and practice in the field of CSR, as well enriching the understanding of this concept among both practitioners and scholars in Ibero-America.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of external stimuli – perceived product quality, advertising value and the halal logo – on Muslim consumers’ attitudes and purchase intentions, using the stimulus–organism–response (S-O-R) model in accordance with its traditional framework. Additionally, it seeks to analyze and compare the purchasing behaviors of male and female consumers in the context of halal cosmetics.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey using purposive sampling was conducted with 635 Muslim consumers in Indonesia to test the proposed model using structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results demonstrated that perceived quality, advertising value and the halal logo significantly enhance attitudes toward halal cosmetics. However, when it comes to purchase intention, only advertising value and the halal logo directly influence it. In terms of gender comparison, the study found significant moderation of gender in the relationship between advertising value and attitude, with this influence being more pronounced among male consumers. The findings indicate that both perceived quality and the halal logo significantly and positively impact attitudes and purchase intentions for both male and female Muslim consumers, with a notably stronger effect observed among females. Interestingly, the influence of advertising value on attitude is significant only among male consumers, highlighting a gender-specific response to advertising stimuli.

Practical implications

The study suggests that businesses operating in the halal cosmetics market should focus on enhancing consumers’ perception of product quality through halal certification. Additionally, they should tailor their marketing strategies based on gender differences and prioritize the prominent display of the halal logo. These actions are expected to positively influence the attitudes and purchase intentions of Muslim consumers in Indonesia.

Originality/value

This study introduces a novel approach to the understanding of consumer behavior toward halal cosmetics by emphasizing the frequently overlooked role of external influences through the S-O-R theory. In contrast to earlier research, which predominantly focused on internal factors and religious compliance, this study explores the impact of marketing interventions such as product quality, advertising and the presence of a halal logo. Additionally, it distinguishes itself by examining the purchasing behavior of both female and male consumers in the realm of halal cosmetics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid flow over a shrinking sheet in the presence of the magnetic field and dust particles.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing partial differential equations for the two-phase flow of the hybrid nanofluid and the dust particles are reduced to ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation. Then, these equations are solved using bvp4c in MATLAB software. The bvp4c solver is a finite-difference code that implements the three-stage Lobatto IIIa formula. The numerical results are gained for several values of the physical parameters. The effects of these parameters on the flow and the thermal characteristics of the hybrid nanofluid and the dust particles are analyzed and discussed. Later, the temporal stability analysis is used to determine the stability of the dual solutions obtained as time evolves.

Findings

The outcome shows that the flow is unlikely to exist unless satisfactory suction strength is imposed on the shrinking sheet. Besides, the heat transfer rate on the shrinking sheet decreases with the increase of . However, the increase in and lead to enhance the heat transfer rate. Two solutions are found, where the domain of the solutions is expanded with the rising of, and. Consequently, the boundary layer separation on the surface is delayed in the presence of these parameters. Implementing the temporal stability analysis, it is found that only one of the solutions is stable as time evolves.

Originality/value

The dusty fluid problem has been widely studied for the flow over a stretching sheet, but only limited findings can be found for the shrinking counterpart. Therefore, this study considers the problem of the dusty fluid flow over a shrinking sheet containing Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid with the effect of the magnetic field. In fact, this is the first study to discover the dual solutions of the dusty hybrid nanofluid flow over a shrinking sheet. Also, further analysis shows that only one of the solutions is stable as time evolves.

Abstract

Purpose

Current evidence indicates that humans and animals are at increased risk of multiple health challenges due to microplastic (MP) profusion. However, mitigation is constrained by inadequate scientific data, further aggravated by the lack of evidence in many African countries. This review therefore synthesized evidence on the current extent of MP pollution in Africa and the analytical techniques for reporting.

Design/methodology/approach

A literature search was undertaken in research databases. Medical subject headings (MeSH) terms and keywords were used in the literature search. The authors found 38 studies from 10 countries that met the inclusion criteria.

Findings

Marine organisms had MPs prevalence ranging from 19% to 100%, whereas sediments and water samples had between 77 and 100%. The most common and dominant polymers included polypropylene and polyethylene.

Practical implications

This review shows that most studies still use methods that are prone to human errors. Therefore, the concentration of MPs is likely underestimated, even though the authors’ prevalence evaluations show MPs are still largely pervasive across multiple environmental matrices. Also, the study reveals significant spatial disparity in MP research across the African continent, showing the need for further research in other African countries.

Originality/value

Even though some reviews have assessed MPs pollution in Africa, they have not evaluated sample prevalence, which is necessary to understand not only concentration but pervasiveness across the continent. Secondly, this study delves deeper into various methods of sampling, extraction and analysis of MPs, as well as limitations and relevant recommendations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss a stability analysis on Cu-Al2O3/water nanofluid having a radiation and suction impacts over a rotating stretching/shrinking sheet.

Design/methodology/approach

The partial differential equations are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation and then being solved numerically using built in function in Matlab software (bvp4c). The effects of pertinent parameters on the temperature and velocity profiles together with local Nusselt number and skin friction are reported.

Findings

Compared to previously published studies, the current work is noticed to be in good deal. The analysis further shows that the non-unique solutions exist for certain shrinking parameter values. Hence, a stability analysis is executed using a linear temporal stability analysis and concluded that the second solution is unstable, while the first solution is stable. The effect of suction parameter is observed to be significant in obtaining the solutions. The improvement of the local skin friction and the decrease of the local Nusselt number on the shrinking surface are observed with the increment of the copper nanoparticle volume fractions.

Originality/value

The originality of current work is the numerical solutions and stability analysis of hybrid nanofluid in rotating flow. This work has also resulted in producing the non-unique solutions for the shrinking sheet, and a stability analysis has also been executed for this flow showing that the second solution is unstable, while the first solution is stable. This paper is therefore valuable for engineers and scientist to get acquainted with the properties of the flow, its behavior and the way to predict it. The authors admit that all the findings are original and were not published anywhere else.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to characterize the main research areas of published works, identify the disciplines that associated with the works and propose research agendas for future inquiries, based on a systematic literature review that encompasses 89 research papers from 2010 to 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

This review commenced with the definition of the three research questions, and subsequently three steps were followed: (1) defining criteria for research paper selection; (2) specifying the data bases and selecting the papers based on the criteria and (3) data analysis, conclusion and discussion of selected papers. The search was limited to the selection of research papers in English, focusing on “community disaster resilience” which is the subject of this review and referred to as keywords which were used for the online search for papers. All these three words must be present in the title of the selected papers.

Findings

The area “resilience management” and “disaster resilience assessment” accounted for 43% of the studies, and it indicates that research has emphasized the description of how community disaster resilience has been managed and assessed. Three disciplines relating to disaster resilience are disaster risk science, public health and environment, and it indicates that research has fostered core areas of community disaster resilience. Three key research agenda include a growing trend to describe successful efforts to avert a potentially catastrophic disaster through solution-based case studies; a paradigmatic shift and implementation of how communities could help the disaster victims recuperate from disasters.

Research limitations/implications

This review is limited to the numbers of chosen papers, as only full papers were chosen. However, in order to establish more rigorous and inclusive results of the study, the numbers of citations of published papers to be chosen for future inquiry should be taken into account.

Originality/value

This present review originally investigated how the concept of disaster resilience has been applied at the community level and in related areas. As resilience is a multidisciplinary concept that has been investigated by several different disciplines, such as sustainability, psychology, economy and sociology, this study looked into how disciplines related to community disaster resilience to provide agenda for future inquiries. This study therefore characterized the main research areas of published works, identified the disciplines that associated with the works and proposed a research agenda for future inquiries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to find the multiple branches of the three-dimensional flow of Cu-Al2 O3/water rotating hybrid nanofluid perfusing a porous medium over the stretching/shrinking surface. The extended model of Darcy due to Forchheimer and Brinkman has been considered to make the hybrid nanofluid model over the pores by considering the porosity and permeability effects.

Design/methodology/approach

The Tiwari and Das model with the thermophysical properties of spherical particles for efficient dynamic viscosity of the nanoparticle is used. The linear similarity transformations are applied to convert the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The system of governing ODEs is solved by using the three-stage Lobatto IIIa scheme in MATLAB for evolving parameters.

Findings

The system of governing ODEs produces dual branches. A unique stable branch is identified with help of stability analysis. The reduced heat transfer rate has been shown to increase with the reduced ϕ2 in both branches. Further, results revealed that the presence of multiple branches depends on the ranges of porosity, suction and stretching/shrinking parameters for the particular value of the rotating parameter.

Originality/value

Dual branches of the three-dimensional flow of Cu-Al2 O3/water rotating hybrid nanofluid have been found. Therefore, stability analysis of the branches is also conducted to know which branch is appropriate for the practical applications. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is novel and there is no previously published work relevant to the present study.
