Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the role of social factors that determine the length of stay in a mental hospital and also understand the main factors leading to the phenomena as a step to solve it.

Design/methodology/approach

A case-control cross-sectional observational study is performed which studies correlates for the lengthy stay in a mental hospital. The study population consists of two groups: Group A (94 patients), taken from the patients hospitalized for more than one year, further subdivided into schizophrenia and schizoaffective inpatient group and bipolar affective inpatient group; and Group B (94 patients), receiving their treatment at the outpatient clinic after being admitted for less than six months, this group was further subdivided into same categories as Group A.

Findings

The study showed that the positive score in positive and negative symptoms scale (PANSS) showed highly statistically significant (p<0.01) correlation with the length of hospital stay for the schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients in the inpatient group. The results showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the inpatient schizophrenic cases and the inpatient affective cases regarding the length of hospital stay.

Research limitations/implications

The linear regression model was used to understand the predictors of increased length of hospital stay. The linear regression analyzing the scale data of schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients found that the length of hospital stay for the schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients depends on the patient’s age and his positive PANSS score. On the other hand, linear regression model for bipolar affective patients in the study found no statistically significant attributes of the length of hospital stay.

Practical implications

The study found that the length of hospital stay for schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients depends on the patient’s age and his positive PANSS score.

Social implications

The need for this study stems from the large numbers of mental inpatients who have been lengthily admitted in mental health hospitals in Egypt, while trying to understand main factors leading to the phenomena as a step to solve it. The study found that there is a highly significant difference between inpatient group and outpatient group regarding the marital status, education level, and psychosocial class, with inpatient group having more single, illiterate, and very low social class cases.

Originality/value

Research in the area of chronic psychiatric hospitalization and its effect on the course and prognosis of mental illness is still scarce, especially in the Arab world; therefore, the research will open the door for further research efforts in the future with a larger sample of patients to study the pros and cons of deinstitutionalization taking into account the past experience of health systems in other countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The pursuit of manufacturing new inks with low financial cost is an urgent economic demand. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to synthesize some new pigments derived from Lithol Rubine (LR) via a successful simple route and to investigate their physicochemical properties for usage in the inks industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Two novel pigments were generated during the reaction of LR with Mn(II) and Co(II) salts in ethanolic solutions. The obtained pigments were isolated as solid compounds and characterized through elemental analysis, UV–vis, Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR spectra, oil absorption, specific gravity, melting point, molar conductivity and magnetic moment measurements. Their dyeing and durability characteristics were examined using American Standard Testing Methods. The synthesized pigments were then applied in inks formulation.

Findings

The printing inks containing the two new pigments (LR–Mn and LR–Co) were compared to (GF 59-606 and GF 59-616), respectively. The results of this study showed that the performance of newly prepared pigments was comparable to that of commercial pigments currently in use in the inks industry.

Practical implications

LR and its new derivative pigments can be used in other different applications such as paper coating, crayon, rubber and paint industries.

Originality/value

The authors designed an efficient synthesis for some novel pigments. The synthesis technique is featured by a short reaction time, high yields and ease of use. The pigments developed would be good and cost-effective substitute for the original commercially available and expensive pigments used in the inks industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study used data envelopment analysis (DEA) models to measure financial efficiency of twelve commercial banks listed in the Egyptian stock exchange (CBLSE), along with evaluating changes to the financial efficiency during the period 2017–2019.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used BCC-I, cross-efficiency, super-efficiency models, and Malmquist productivity index (MPI) to assess financial efficiency of the examined banks. The available data from both inputs and outputs were analyzed using R. studio V.I.3. 1056 software.

Findings

Out of twelve banks examined, only four banks were efficient under BCC-I model over different years of the study period; however, only one bank (CIB) appeared to be the most efficient compared to other peers in the study sample. Moreover, MPI results revealed decreased financial efficiency during the study period, due to the decreased technological innovation, except for HDB. Tobit regression results confirmed that total assets and total equity are significant factors impacted financial efficiency of CBLSE.

Practical implications

This study sheds light on the importance of evaluating financial efficiency of CBLSE to all stakeholders, to pinpoint weaknesses in banks' performance, and for evaluating financial policies and investment decisions.

Originality/value

Several studies sought to implement different models of DEA to assess banking performance in different regions of the world, but very few studies examined financial efficiency of banks. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this study is one of those few that addressed financial efficiency of banks in Egypt.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop and test a framework for integration between data envelopment analysis (DEA) and artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the best financial performance concerning return on assets and return on equity for banks listed on the Egyptian Exchange, to help managers generate what-if scenarios? For performance improvement and benchmarking.

Design/methodology/approach

The study empirically tested the three-stage DEA-ANN framework. First, DEA was used as a preprocessor of the banks’ efficiency scores. Second, a back-propagation neural network as a multi-layer perceptron-ANN’s model was designed using expected data sets from DEA to learn optimal performance patterns. Third, the superior performance of banks was forecasted.

Findings

The results indicated that banks are not operating under their most productive operations, and there is room for potential improvements to reach outperformance. Moreover, the neural networks’ empirical test results showed high correlations between the actual and expected values, with low prediction errors in both the test and prediction phases.

Practical implications

Based on best performance prediction, banks can generate alternative scenarios for future performance improvement and enabling managers to develop effective strategies for performance control under uncertainty and limited data. Besides, supporting the decision-making process and proactive management of performance.

Originality/value

Despite the growing research stream supporting DEA-ANN integration applications, these are still limited and scarce, especially in the Middle East and North Africa region. Therefore, the study trying to fill this gap to help bank managers predict the best financial performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the value relevance (VR) of accounting information (AI) presented by Egyptian listed non-financial companies. Further, the study investigates the influence of institutional ownership on the value relevance of AI in a developing market, namely, the Egyptian market.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses data from 2014 to 2017 with a total of 248 observations and analyses the data using regression analysis. Data are collected from the nonfinancial companies listed on the Egyptian Stock Exchange.

Findings

The authors found that the AI reported by the Egyptian listed non-financial companies is value relevant. Regarding the influence of institutional ownership, it is found to significantly impact the VR of AI reported by the sample companies. This model investigated the effect of corporate size and financial leverage as controlling variables and found that they have an insignificant influence on the VR of AI.

Originality/value

The current study findings enrich the literature by enhancing the understanding regarding institutional owners’ impact on corporate value. Further, bringing evidence from an emerging market can have implications for accounting researchers interested in addressing other emerging markets with similar contextual and institutional environments.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of Covid-19 on transforming accountability, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and office operation and control. This paper explains how unleashing the rationality of health and safety along with internal CSR made the transformation to telework successfully operable in a periphery of a western multinational corporation.

Design/methodology/approach

The study draws upon the theories of governmentality and social accountability. It adopts an interpretative qualitative research approach and uses the case study method. Data were collected from one of the biggest private sector telecommunication companies in Egypt.

Findings

This study finds that Covid-19 and its related health and safety discourse represented a good rationale for the western home office to accelerate the initiation of its office transformation plan to reach full working from home policy in a less developed country peripheral subsidiary. Under the guise of CSR, the company spent a large budget to make this transformation quickly operable, while its Egyptian subsidiary is financially distressed. Moreover, the company achieved its objectives from this new rationality as employees currently prefer the telework mode which reduces the company costs in the long run.

Practical implications

The study provides practitioners with evidence and practicable knowledge regarding the impact of Covid-19 on office reconfiguration and the ways used to achieve this in the Egyptian telecommunication sector.

Originality/value

The current study extends the governmentality literature by illustrating that transformation to telework in emerging markets is an operational manifestation of cost reduction and efficiency rationality under the guise of CSR. Moreover, it extends the office transformation literature by bringing early evidence regarding office transition plans during COVID-19 in an emerging market.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the hijab research impactful authors, influential journals, collaboration networks and emerging trends. In addition, keyword co-occurrence techniques are used to scrutinize the field’s major schools of thought.

Design/methodology/approach

Hijab research has witnessed a distinct proliferation during the past decade. In this article, the authors apply bibliometric network techniques to examine the conceptual/intellectual structure of this domain based on 485 Web of Science documents written by 848 authors representing 66 nations and spanning almost 40 years (1984–2021).

Findings

Results show that the most impactful journals publishing hijab research are Women’s Studies International Forum, Gender, Place and Culture, Ethnic and Racial Studies and the Journal of Islamic Marketing. Results also show that the author collaboration network in hijab research is sparse. Furthermore, results related to collaborative networks between institutions and countries reveal a global “North–South” schism between developed and developing nations. Finally, the multiple correspondence analysis applied to obtain the hijab research conceptual map reflects the depth and breadth of the field’s foci.

Originality/value

The present analysis has far-reaching implications for aspiring researchers interested in hijab research as the authors retrospectively trace the evolution in research output over the past four decades, establish linkages between the authors and articles and reveal trending topics/hotspots within the broad theme of hijab research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide empirical evidence to verify the dimensional structure of artificial intelligence (AI) Chatbot quality and examine the impact of these dimensions on consumer satisfaction and brand advocacy among Gen Z in the fast food industry in Egypt.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical data was obtained with an electronic self-administered survey instrument from 397 young consumers who had prior experience using AI Chatbots across multiple fast food brands in Egypt. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the formulated hypotheses.

Findings

The results showed that AI Chatbot quality dimensions, specifically information authenticity and system compliance, significantly enhance young consumers’ satisfaction. In addition, information authenticity of AI Chatbot quality was observed to wield a significant influence on young consumers’ advocacy. In contrast, an insignificant relationship was noticed between satisfaction and advocacy. Moreover, the mediating role of consumer satisfaction was not established.

Practical implications

Given that Gen Z is more technology savvy and computer literate, marketers and practitioners of fast food brands should invest in AI tools to respond to young consumers’ expectations and improve their perception of their services.

Originality/value

This study uses stimulus-organism-response theory to understand the mediating effect of young consumers’ satisfaction in the relationship between AI Chatbot quality and consumer brand advocacy within the fast food industry. Also, it introduced two novel main constructs of AI Chatbot quality, namely, information authenticity and system compliance.
