Abstract
The textile and apparel industries in North America have experienced dramatic changes in the past decade. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has prompted the formation of apparel supply networks throughout the Western Hemisphere combining textile industries and retailers in the USA with apparel industries in Mexico to compete against Asian countries. Contrary to the widely acclaimed intent of NAFTA, the increased apparel production in Mexico has not led to a growth for the US textile industry. Instead, the US textile industry has continuously lost ground in global competition, giving up a large portion of its manufacturing. Today, the US textile industry is undergoing negative profits, countless plant closings, layoffs, and eventual bankruptcies. This study analyzes the impact of NAFTA and US textile companies’ corporate strategies on the performance of the textile industry and examines the pending strategic issues for maintaining US textile companies’ competitiveness in global markets.

Abstract
Given the growing external value chain disruptions, there have been many studies seeking to propose methods for improving the resilience of global value chains (GVCs). This study complements previous studies by proposing the perspective of firm strategy in switching governance modes to improve the resilience of GVCs. Specifically, this study explores under what conditions MNCs are more likely to switch governance toward non-equity mode (NEM) from the alternative ones. This study introduces three industry-specific factors that affect MNCs’ decision for NEM. It then applies this framework to explain how Korean MNCs’ strategic governance change for the co-productions with Chinese firms when entering their film market which is highly restricted by the Chinese government. This study enriches the research on GVC resilience by arguing that MNCs can avoid unfavorable environmental impacts by flexibly changing their GVC governance modes under certain conditions. This study also contributes to the understanding on why some countries maintain their high attractiveness for foreign MNCs, whereas other countries do not, given the similar level of restrictive government regulations. The protectionist policies of the host government are valid only in an industry where the three conditions are met, as they increase the possibility of domestic firms’ participation by encouraging foreign MNCs to shift their entry mode from sole venture toward alliances with domestic firms.

Abstract
This study reports on an inductive, qualitative content analysis exploring depictions of the United States and U.S. citizens in translated, international literature for children. The sample included 18 titles recognized with the Batchelder Award or Honor, a recognition given to U.S. publishers who translate and publish outstanding children’s literature with international origins. The study was situated within the framework of cosmopolitanism, a theoretical perspective acknowledging the importance of local values, culture, and traditions while embracing the global and the unfamiliar. Findings revealed depictions of the United States on the local level as a destination, refuge, and glamorized place of diversity. On the global level, the United States was portrayed as a world power with regard to its military, economics, media, and culture. These findings promote perspective taking and critical literacy as they offer a window for U.S. students into how people from other nations perceive their country.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the causal relationships among categories in the China Quality Award (CQA) model based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award model.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper identifies seven factors from CQA categories: leadership, strategic planning, human resource focus, process management, customer and market focus, information and analysis, and results. Extending the basic Baldrige theory “Leadership drives the system that creates results,” this paper identifies driver (leadership), direction (strategic planning), foundation (information and analysis), system (human resource focus, process management, and customer and market focus), and results(business results). Structural equation model (SEM) is used to analyze the empirical data and estimate the path coefficients among CQA categories.
Findings
First, driver has not only a direct influence on results, but also has an indirect influence on results through system. Leadership has a great influence on foundation and direction. Second, direction affects human resource focus and customer and market focus of system while it has no influence on process management. Third, human resource focus and customer and market focus both affect process management, and process management has a significant impact on results. Fourth, foundation affects direction and all of the categories of system.
Originality/value
There are few studies which try to analyze the causal relationships among categories in the CQA model.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this article is to provide an insight into the determinants of customers' internet banking (IB) acceptance. Therefore, it attempts to address a research need for extending the technology acceptance model (TAM) by adding contextual factors for IB case.
Design/methodology/approach
A research model reflecting the effects of perceived risk (PR), perceived playfulness (PPL) and perceived behavioral control (PBC) on TAM constructs is proposed. The partial least squares (PLS) procedure is used to analyze 161 cases collected from individual IB users through a web‐based survey.
Findings
The results indicate that perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEOU) are immediate direct determinants of customers' attitudes towards using IB (ATT). PU, PR and ATT determine the large proportion of behavioral intentions to use IB (BI). Although PPL positively influences only PEOU, PBC exerts positive direct effects on PEOU and PU and indirect effects on PU and ATT.
Research limitations/implications
The study findings were obtained from the single snapshot research, the small data set covering only active e‐mail users and the participants' self‐reports about BI. Therefore, the future research should carry a longitudinal nature to show the temporal change effects, remedy the possibility of self‐selection bias with a broader research sample and validate the IB usage externally instead of self‐reported BI.
Originality/value
This study supplies the valuable information for researchers and practitioners about the effects of PR, PPL and PBC on IB adaptation behavior of Turkish customers. Furthermore, the study reveals that extended TAM could be used to provide a solid theoretical foundation of IB acceptance case.

Abstract
The idea of implementing supply chain management (SCM) principles for the construction industry was embraced by construction stakeholders to enhance the sector's performance. The analysis from the literature revealed that the implementation of SCM in the construction industry enhances the industry's value in terms of cost-saving, time savings, material management, risk management and others. The construction supply chain (CSC) can be managed using the pull or push system. This chapter also discusses the origin and proliferation of SCM into the construction industry. The chapter revealed that the concept of SCM has passed through five different eras: the creation era, the use of ERP, globalisation stage, specialisation stage and electronic stage. The findings from the literature revealed that we are presently in the fourth industrial revolution (4IR) era. At this stage, the SCM witnesses the adoption of technologies and principles driven by the 4IR. This chapter also revealed that the practice of SCM in the construction industry is centred around integration, collaboration, communication and the structure of the supply chain (SC). The forms and challenges hindering the adoption of these practices were also discussed extensively in this chapter.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to investigate how country risk, different political actions from the government and bureaucratic behavior influence the activities in industry supply chains (SCs) in emerging markets. The main objective of this study is to investigate the influence of these external stakeholders’ elements to the demand-side and supply-side drivers and barriers for improving competitiveness of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) industry in the way of analyzing supply chain. Considering the phenomenon of recent change in the RMG business environment and the competitiveness issues this study uses the principles of stakeholder and resource dependence theory and aims to find out some factors which influence to make an efficient supply chain for improving competitiveness. The RMG industry of Bangladesh is the case application of this study. Following a positivist paradigm, this study adopts a two phase sequential mixed-method research design consisting of qualitative and quantitative approaches. A tentative research model is developed first based on extensive literature review. Qualitative field study is then carried out to fine tune the initial research model. Findings from the qualitative method are also used to develop measures and instruments for the next phase of quantitative method. A survey is carried out with sample of top and middle level executives of different garment companies of Dhaka city in Bangladesh and the collected quantitative data are analyzed by partial least square-based structural equation modeling. The findings support eight hypotheses. From the analysis the external stakeholders’ elements like bureaucratic behavior and country risk have significant influence to the barriers. From the internal stakeholders’ point of view the manufacturers’ and buyers’ drivers have significant influence on the competitiveness. Therefore, stakeholders need to take proper action to reduce the barriers and increase the drivers, as the drivers have positive influence to improve competitiveness.
This study has both theoretical and practical contributions. This study represents an important contribution to the theory by integrating two theoretical perceptions to identify factors of the RMG industry’s SC that affect the competitiveness of the RMG industry. This research study contributes to the understanding of both external and internal stakeholders of national and international perspectives in the RMG (textile and clothing) business. It combines the insights of stakeholder and resource dependence theories along with the concept of the SC in improving effectiveness. In a practical sense, this study certainly contributes to the Bangladeshi RMG industry. In accordance with the desire of the RMG manufacturers, the research has shown that some influential constructs of the RMG industry’s SC affect the competitiveness of the RMG industry. The outcome of the study is useful for various stakeholders of the Bangladeshi RMG industry sector ranging from the government to various private organizations. The applications of this study are extendable through further adaptation in other industries and various geographic contexts.

Abstract
This chapter analyzes how institutional pressures have allowed for continuities as well as brought about changes in modern police organizations in Korea. When facing a legitimacy crisis, the Korean law enforcement system has typically responded with organizational restructuring. Strong myth-building patterns compensate for the lack of moral legitimacy of the police, particularly under authoritarian-military regimes that suppress democratization movements in Korea. Even after seemingly radical organizational changes aimed at placing the police under democratic control, highly institutionalized core structures of the police remain in place. Performance reform after the economic crisis, which was proceeded from reformers’ shared belief in the market-driven solutions, diagnosed the Korean police as a big, inefficient, and self-serving bureaucracy, a diagnosis that eventually caused gradual deterioration in the taken-for-grantedness of policing activities. The internet and social media made the Korean police even more vulnerable to external challenges and a questioning of its legitimacy.

Purpose
With the proliferation of virtual reality (VR) applications in electronic commerce, investigations on the effects of VR on consumer responses are important. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of online presentation modes (i.e. situational VR, pure VR and picture) on consumer responses for three product types (i.e. geometric, material and mechanical).
Design/methodology/approach
This study conducted a 3×3 between-subjects experiment to validate the research model and hypotheses.
Findings
The results revealed that both the situational VR mode and the pure VR mode had a greater impact on product knowledge and purchase intention than the picture mode. The situational VR mode yielded a higher level of product knowledge and purchase intention than the pure VR mode although it was not statistically significant. Furthermore, the pattern of VR modes superiority was found to be consistent across geometric, material and mechanical product types.
Originality/value
This research study contributes to the VR literature by investigating a new type of VR: situational VR, and offering a more comprehensive picture of consumer responses to online product presentations. The authors then drew the implications from the findings to suggest guidelines for practitioners to efficiently allocate resources and maximize the effectiveness of online presentation modes.
