The learning outcomes are as follows: what tasks are to be done by medical representatives in pharmaceutical industry? This study also highlights various competencies required to do effective selling in this industry; analyzes and discusses different unethical practices going on in the market; explains why ethical norms are necessary in sales context when sales targets are already achievable with unethical means; and develops and comments on strategies Flori Pharmaceutical can make to overcome on these unethical issues. What should be the response of Dahar to the email of Naveed khan? What course of action should be taken by Dahar in the deceitful reporting case of Mohsin Ali?
Case overview/synopsis
Flori is considered a leading and growing multinational organization in the highly competitive environment of Pakistan pharmaceutical industry with over 40 years of experience. The company aims to command a leading position in developing new health-care products as it offers a wide range of diabetic, cardiovascular, respiratory and vitamin products based on quality as a result of high research and examination. Recently, an email to Bilal Dahar on March 2017 from Flori’s star sales person Naveed Khan has forced management to take some strong decisions regarding ethical norms and values to be adopted by medical representatives of Flori pharmaceuticals. The email highlighted the issues related to sales pressure which are leading toward unethical sales practices. Dahar just not have to maintain Flori’s ethical code of conduct but he and his team also has to work hard to achieve more than 26% growth rate in sales revenue as compared to last year. Dahar knew that the highly competitive environment of pharmaceutical industry has led most of the stake holders to indulge in unethical behavior to achieve their individual targets. He knew that this is dangerous in long term for the multinational organizations such as Flori pharmaceuticals as if the similar behavior continues, the sales culture and values of the organization would be on stake. He also has to decide what decision to be taken against deceitful reporting issue of one of the top-performer territory managers, who was key person in helping Flori to close the sales year 2016 with the revenue of Rs. 6.4bn, a 26% growth over the last year. The case is rich enough to provide a platform regarding management of several ethical challenges in pharmaceutical selling and developing strategies based on them.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Islamic and conventional equities.
Design/methodology/approach
To study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ASEAN Islamic and conventional equities, first, the authors calculated the volatility by using exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity methodology and then used Wavelet methodology to see the co-movement between the volatility and returns of ASEAN equity market indicators and COVID-19 cases.
Findings
The authors find that until the beginning of August, COVID-19 adversely relates to the returns of both the indices. The conventional index seemed to have increased volatility during the time period, whereas the Islamic index seemed to have declined volatility.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the very few studies examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ASEAN Islamic and conventional equities. Additionally, this study adds value by comparing Islamic and conventional equities.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the impact of banking market competition on banks’ profitability and banks’ risk using a sample of six countries from the Middle East from 2006 to 2017.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper uses the system generalized method of moments estimator to tackle potential omitted variable bias, endogeneity and simultaneity issues.
Findings
After controlling for bank market and country-specific characteristics, this study reports strong and robust evidence that competition in the banking market is conducive to lower financial performance. This research further finds that intense banking competition leads to lower profitability and increased risk regardless of bank type. As the relationship is not different for Islamic banks, one can argue that activities of Islamic banks are based on the basic traditional banking operations and products, and banks need to diversify their business activities to reduce failure risk and preserve the banking sector’s stability.
Originality/value
This paper tries to bridge the gap by studying the impact of competition on bank performance in high-income dual banking Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) economies. Earlier studies have either covered all the dual banking economies or the Middle East and North African region. The authors suggest that the GCC banking market is required to be studied separately because of its idiosyncrasies. Second, unlike earlier studies, the authors have not only examined the impact of competition on bank return but also on bank risk.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine whether competition from Islamic banks add to the financial stability and profitability of financial sector and to assess the sources of such (in)stability.
Design/methodology/approach
Using Herfindahl–Hirschman Index as a measure of competition and Z-score as a measure of stability, the authors run panel GMM regressions to assess their association with data from 84 banks in Indonesia and Malaysia over a period from 2005 to 2018.
Findings
Increasing competition from Islamic banks in East Asian banking industry adds to the stability of the system while it does not affect profitability. This stability is derived from both asset and liability side.
Research limitations/implications
While adding to the literature on banking and Islamic finance, this paper suggests to the policy makers that policies promoting Islamic banking will tend to assist in enhancing financial sector stability.
Practical implications
Growth in alternative financial instruments brings steadiness within the financial structure. Such growth and competition should be encouraged.
Originality/value
The paper exploits an interesting setting of dual-banking industry in two large Muslim-majority developing country for testing two competing theories: competition-fragility and competition-stability. Such a setting also allowed us to examine whether increasing stability of financial sector is driven by demand or supply.

Abstract
Purpose
The primary objective of this research is to examine the effects of digital transformation capability (DTC) on employee turnover intention (ETI) in Jordanian universities. Based on the social cognitive theory (SCT). The study also investigates the mediated moderation role of knowledge management capability (KMC) and digital leadership (DL) in the relationship between DTC and ETI.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey questionnaire was used to obtain data from 384 faculty members at Jordanian universities in Jordan, and the SmartPLS4 and SPSS software were used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The results reveal that DTC significantly mitigates ETI through providing a favourable environment for knowledge sharing and innovation. Using DL as a moderator, the results show that the relationship between DTC and ETI becomes stronger in the presence of high DL.
Originality/value
This research uniquely integrates SCT to explore the combined impact of DTC, KMC and DL on faculty turnover intentions at Jordanian universities. It offers novel viewpoints on retaining academic staff by implementing smart digital attempts.

Abstract
Purpose
Leadership research is of interest to academics and practitioners in the construction industry. Based on the ego-depletion theory and authentic leadership theory, the current study aims to investigate the impact of women authentic leadership on leaders' emotional exhaustion and job engagement in the construction industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The data were gathered in two waves using a time lag approach. The responses of 276 women leaders-follower dyads from construction firms in China's eastern provinces were analyzed using a moderated mediation model.
Findings
Most of the proposed hypotheses were supported by the findings of this study, which showed that authentic leadership can reduce emotional exhaustion in women leaders and increase work engagement through ego depletion. Furthermore, the leader's sense of belonging, according to this study, moderates the mediating effect of ego depletion.
Research limitations/implications
This study can help managers, policymakers and human resource professionals think about authentic leadership and its impact on women leaders. Furthermore, ego depletion has an impact on the psychological well-being of authentic women leaders. The sense of belongingness of a leader is critical in buffering the negative effects of ego depletion for women in authentic leadership. Thus, women leaders in construction sector should be encouraged to express a sense of belonging to their followers, since this will improve their work engagement and lessen their emotional exhaustion.
Originality/value
This study is unique in that it examines the authentic behavior of women leaders in the Chinese construction sector, which is a challenging profession for women to work in as site managers. This study contributes to the literature on women in leadership by demonstrating how authentic leadership behavior influences the wellbeing and engagement of leaders. In addition, the study indicated that the effect of the mediator (ego depletion) and moderator (leader sense of belongingness) on the relationship between women's authentic leadership and the leader's own psychological wellbeing and job engagement was significant.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the relationship between technology-distinct capabilities (TDC) and innovative work behavior (IWB) through the mediating effect of strategic flexibility (SF), to examine the behavior toward technopreneurship (BTT) among Omani small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Furthermore, technopreneur self-efficacy (TSE) is investigated as a moderating variable between TDC and SF.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the quantitative research design, the survey questionnaire instrument was used to collect data from SMEs’ owners and managers. Using purposive sampling, the study comprised 285 responses from Muscat, Sohar and Al-Buraimi regions. Responses were analyzed through SPSS 25 and Smart PLS 4 using structural equation modeling (SEM).
Findings
The main findings revealed a positive and significant influence of TDC and IWB on SF. In addition, SF mediates the relationship between TDC, IWB and TBB. Results showed no effect of TSE on TDC and SF. The study outlines significant theoretical and practical implications. Dynamic capability (DC) theory provided a framework for understanding the highly competitive Omani business climate. The diffusion of innovation (DOI) provides the way forward to SMEs that how they embrace and induce novel concepts, including SF.
Originality/value
The findings of the study can be used by academics and policymakers to develop policies that support SMEs’ technological innovation and adaptability. In the Omani context, policymakers and public managers can utilize this research to evaluate the different technopreneurship support programs and encourage SMEs to adopt digital technology to capitalize on the nation’s entrepreneurial dynamic.

Abstract
Purpose
The study of credit risk has been of the utmost importance when it comes to measuring the soundness and stability of the banking system. Due to the growing importance of Islamic banking system, a fierce competition between Islamic and conventional banks have started to emerge which in turn is impacting credit riskiness of both banking system.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the system GMM technique on 283 conventional banks and 60 Islamic banks for the period of 2006–2017, this paper explores the important impact of size and competition on the credit risk in 15 dual banking economies.
Findings
The authors found that as bank competition increases credit risk seems to be reduced. On the size effect, the authors found that big Islamic banks are less risky than big conventional banks whereas small Islamic banks are riskier than small conventional banks. The results are robust for different panel data estimation models and sub-samples of different size groups. The findings of this paper provide important insights into the competition-credit risk nexus in the dual banking system.
Originality/value
The paper is specifically focused on credit risk in dual banking environment and tries to fill the gap in the literature by studying (1) do the Islamic and conventional banks exhibit a different level of credit risk; (2) does competition in the banking system impact the credit risk of Islamic and conventional banks and finally (3) do the big and small banks exhibit similar levels of credit risk.

Abstract
Purpose
The current study aimed to investigate how perceived human capital sustainability leadership (HCSL) affects work outcomes (i.e. work engagement and job satisfaction), specifically through the mediating role of knowledge sharing behaviour in the hospitality industry. Building on social exchange theory and conservation of resources theory, the authors propose that knowledge sharing behaviour is an attempt to share and expand an individual's resources, which in return motivates employees during work. Furthermore, through the mediating effect of knowledge sharing behaviour, the authors attempt to provide empirical evidence for organisational actions and employees’ reciprocating actions, therefore, triggering positive contribution.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors methodologically employed structure equation modelling for the analysis which includes reflective–formative higher-order construct (HOC) (i.e. HCSL). The authors tested the hypotheses with partial least square structure equation modelling (PLS-SEM) from a sample of 382 hotel employees who were selected through purposive sampling.
Findings
This study’s findings suggest that the employee engagement and job satisfaction regresses on HCSL and knowledge sharing behaviour. The study’s analysis also suggests that the relationships between the HCSL and work outcomes are mediated by knowledge sharing behaviour.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the sustainability leadership literature by looking into the integrated model of sustainable leadership from its four dimensions (i.e. sustainability leadership, ethical leadership, mindful leadership and servant leadership) and its consequences for work outcomes. Furthermore, the authors examined how knowledge sharing behaviour, being an underlining mechanism, affects these relationships, thus having implications for academia and practitioners.
