Abstract

Purpose

The study has identified the factors among students that can enable or inhibit students from using online learning platforms. Students enrolled at different levels, diversified streams and separate courses were surveyed for the investigation. The study also highlights the significant hitches faced in using or adopting e-learning.

Design/methodology/approach

Responses were collected from Indian students on a seven-point Likert-type scale using a structured questionnaire around the updated Technology Readiness Index's four dimensions. Adapted dimensions were evolved to identify the people's propensity to accept and reject the new technology.

Findings

The result of the survey highlights the students' positive attitude towards the e-learning approach. The diffusion of e-learning platforms occupies them with a feeling of optimism and innovativeness. However, discomfort in using the newly penetrated e-learning platforms was also found. Furthermore, no significant variances concerning the different demographics were detected.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional research approach was used for the investigation. However, it is evident that with the use and experience of technology, an increase in its acceptance follows. Thus, a longitudinal research approach should explore the differences between students' earlier and later involvement after experiencing the platform. A cross-country investigation is also needed to measure the technological biases among students.

Practical implications

With advancements in technology, the chances of diffusion of e-learning in traditional classrooms have risen. However, to encourage the student's engagement towards e-learning, the platform needs to be student and teacher-friendly. This study serves the purpose of exploring the determinants that will guide educational institutes and developers of online platforms in achieving excellence in enhancement and engagement among students.

Originality/value

The investigation adds to recognize the acceptance of e-learning among students by exploring its determinants using the Technology Readiness Index 2.0. The study has also explored the differences in readiness to use e-learning on differences in enrolment level, institute type and courses.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review existing literature on users’ digital learning acceptance behavior and to identify gaps in the current body of knowledge and suggest future research directions. The paper also includes identification of motivating as well as inhibiting factors previously explored by academicians in the acceptance of digital learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The systematic literature review based on PRISMA methodology was conducted, and 200 articles from peer-reviewed journals on digital learning acceptance behavior using technology adoption theories were examined.

Findings

The study found an overall rise in the number of papers published yearly during 2002–2017. Most of the studies were published in two journals, i.e. Computers & Education and Computers in Human Behaviour and were carried out in Asia followed by Europe, North America, Africa, Oceania and South America. It was also noted that most of the studies have used the technology acceptance model and were empirical in nature. The study also found that prominently students’ digital learning acceptance behavior was investigated. The review also indicates a lack of qualitative and mixed method (qualitative and quantitative) approaches to study digital learning acceptance behavior.

Practical implications

The study identified gaps in the current body of knowledge by reviewing published articles that will suggest future directions for further research. The top three determinants of digital learning acceptance that have been analyzed were the behavioral intention, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, followed by attitude and user behavior. The study articulates the implications for providers in marketing digital learning products, for higher education institution in expanding digital content, for students seeking digital education tools, for educators in motivating students to accept digital learning and for governments in delivering cost-effective public education by utilizing digital learning.

Originality/value

The paper analyzes 200 publications on digital learning acceptance through technology adoption theories. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first initiative to provide systematic and exhaustive summarization of the knowledge in this subject. It further explores the various factors influencing digital learning adoption behavior and provides avenues for future research. The paper is useful for researchers working on digital learning acceptance behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

Blockchain is an evolving technology that has an impact on a variety of industries and related operations including food supply chain. There are several challenges associated in the implementation of blockchain in the food supply chain. As a result, the goal of this research is to identify and analyse the barriers associated with the implementation of blockchain in food supply chains.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature review is conducted to identify 16 primary barriers associated with the implementation of blockchain technology in the food supply chain and experts finalise these identified barriers and further categorise them into four groups. Furthermore, the best worst method is used to prioritise the finalised barriers.

Findings

The findings suggest that “technological barriers” and “organisational barriers” are primary barriers among the identified barriers for the implementation of blockchain. These barriers could be mitigated through supply chain collaboration, efficient blockchain technology development through research and development, and increasing technical competence.

Research limitations/implications

In terms of limitation, there is a possibility that some barriers were overlooked in the literature review process, and expert judgement might be prejudiced. This paper examines the blockchain implementation in the food supply chain, to assist policymakers in overcoming these barriers and ensuring effective adoption.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the effective implementation of blockchain technology in the food supply chain in the context of emerging economies.
