Abstract

Purpose

This paper is a research note on “Quality framework in education through application of Interpretive Structural Modeling” (Sahney, S., Banwet, D.K. and Karunes, S. (2010), Quality framework in education through the application of Interpretive Structural Modeling: an administrative staff perspective in the Indian context, The TQM Journal, 22(1)). Sahney et al. applied Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to prioritize, sequence and categorize elements critical to quality management in education; however, it seems that the final reachability matrix, and consequently the results, may not be true as some transitivity was not incorporated. So, the purpose of this paper is to apply a method to develop a transitive and compatible reachability matrix.

Design/methodology/approach

A counter-example was used to show that the final reachability matrix was incorrect, and then, based on Warfield’s studies, a transitive and compatible reachability matrix was developed directly.

Findings

As high priority should be placed on tackling the design characteristics which have a high driving power and thus possessing the capability to influence other elements, the correct analysis of ISM and its consequences is important to the priorities. The results from this study differed from the results of the Sahney et al. to a large extent. According to their analysis, all attributes were in the linkage area which has high driving power and high dependence. However, the authors reached different values for the relative importance and the interdependencies among the elements resulting in three different clusters.

Originality/value

This note clarifies and corrects the way the ISM methodology can be applied.

Abstract

In any quality improvement programme, measurement plays a vital role as it provides information for decision making. Finding the characteristics of quality is a prerequisite for the measurement process. Despite recent research on general service’s quality dimensions, little work has been concentrated on public services and in particular higher education. Examines conceptual models proposed for different environments for consistency with higher education. Reviews quality factors found in the relevant literature and presents a new framework for the dimensions of quality in higher education.

Abstract

Posits that the role that quality plays in the higher education sector is becoming more important as the dominance of market‐orientation leaves no alternative for universities and colleges but to improve their quality while increasing efficiency. Philosophies like total quality management (TQM), which have been successfully adopted in commercial organizations, are generally seen as the way forward. Includes a review of the published literature on theories and applications of TQM in higher education. The case studies were analysed using ten features found to be critical to a total quality philosophy. Conclusions were drawn regarding similarities and differences between higher education and other environments as well as between US and UK approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research was to model the impact of customer knowledge on the performance of organization with a focus on information technology industry. Furthermore, it is intended to analyze the effect of customer knowledge investment on the performance measures, by reviewing investment policies.

Design/methodology/approach

The relationship between customer knowledge and performance measures was specified using literature review and grounded theory method. The system dynamics approach was then applied to analyze the impact of the customer knowledge on the performance measures.

Findings

This study provided a dynamic model on the causal relationship between customer knowledge and organizational performance. The results showed that measures such as product development, financial performance, idea generation, technical knowledge and knowledge maturity were affected by the customer knowledge while the relationship with customer loyalty and the number of customers was not proven. Besides, it was found that to increase the impact of customer knowledge on organizational performance, knowledge maturity was essential, and investing on customer knowledge without investing on knowledge maturity would reduce the organizational performance. The results also showed that more knowledge investment would not necessarily increase financial strength of the organization.

Practical implications

Results of this study could be useful for strategy formulation and deployment especially for IT-based companies showing the importance of investment on customer knowledge on the one hand and the knowledge maturity in the organization on the other hand.

Originality/value

In this research, the impact of customer knowledge on both financial and nonfinancial performance measures was studied showing new findings on the dynamism of their relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a model for measuring relational capital in banks by using measurement indicators defined in previous studies and according to the conditions of the banking industry and in particular the Ansar bank in Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

The study identifies measurement indicators of relational capital from the related resources and articles and uses content analysis and factor analysis methods. It also measures the selected indicators through a questionnaire analyzing them using the SPSS software to create a model to measure relational capital in the bank.

Findings

By using the measurement model created in this research, relational capital in Ansar bank is determined to be comprised of eight principal components. The total score of these components is the starting point of promoting the relational capital in the banking industry.

Research limitations/implications

This study may not have thoroughly covered the peer- reviewed articles on intellectual capital, but it can be assumed with high confidence that it has made a serious attempt at studying the most important papers on the subject as of date. Moreover, the model presented in this study is valid only when applied in comparing banks. It should further be noted that time limitation, non-availability of relevant experts as well as the required data may have affected the accuracy and reliability of the results. However, the final model has been utilized to try to optimally minimize each limitation according to the existing resources, and through their proper management.

Practical implications

This study provides a new approach that can significantly help bank managers in comparing their banks in the field of relational capital and reacting to their weaknesses and performance advantages of relational capital over its rivals.

Originality/value

In addition to creating a new framework for relational capital indicators, this study offers a model for measuring relational capital in the banks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new method based on goodness of fit tests for shift detection problems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this method, although the distribution of gathered data from the process is the subject of control, but any out-of-control signal could also be generalized to the overall state of the process including the parameters of the distribution.

Findings

Results of simulation study denote that among goodness of fit tests, the χ2 test has a better performance than the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test in detecting shifts of process. Also comparison of proposed method with traditional methods denotes that, proposed method generally has smaller probabilities of first and second type errors.

Originality/value

To the best of author’s knowledge, no attention has previously been paid to application of goodness of fit tests in process control.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the significance of improvement of marketing process using Six Sigma methodology, in the context of a banking environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on Six Sigma's DMAIC model, the paper uses Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control phases to study marketing process improvement in Saman Bank.

Findings

Research states the way concepts of marketing performance management relates to the improvement of a bank marketing process using Six Sigma. Low quality was observed in the process and then regarding customer relations as one of the main priorities, improvement actions were planned. A major marketing failure for the bank was decline of online banking usage, which justifies the importance of loyal online banking customers in marketing plans.

Practical implications

This paper helps marketing departments in financial institutions to analyze their current performance and execute improvement actions to optimize their process. One fact in designing marketing improvement actions for banks is effectively using related information systems to organize the high amount of marketing data and to respond quickly to customer needs.

Originality/value

Marketing performance measurement is done in a new way as the research describes how a general marketing process can adopt Six Sigma tools to have stronger customer relations, reduced marketing costs and how to prioritize improvement actions systematically.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the key roles of human and relational capital in the export orientation and competitiveness of knowledge-intensive cooperative companies. It is also aimed to examine the moderating role of marketing knowledge capabilities.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 552 managers at 86 companies, selected from knowledge-intensive export cooperatives, were analyzed with structural equation modeling with the partial least squares approach.

Findings

Results indicate that both human and relational capital exert considerable effects on competitiveness. Export orientation was a driving factor for cooperatives’ competitiveness. Human and relational capital fostered the effects of export orientation on competitiveness. Moreover, marketing knowledge capabilities were found to moderate the relationships between human and relational capital and export orientation, as well as between export orientation and competitiveness.

Originality/value

By highlighting the role of human capital and relational capital in export orientation and competitiveness, this study offers an analysis of important managerial processes within cooperative companies, which have not been sufficiently addressed in previous research. This research also demonstrated the moderating role of marketing knowledge capabilities in strengthening relationships between human and relational capital and export orientation, as well as between export orientation and competitiveness, which has been neglected in previous studies. These findings provide academics and practitioners with a new framework for examining the relationships between these constructs, which will enable them to establish strategies for achieving a competitive advantage.

Abstract

Purpose

The fundamental purpose of this study is to analyse the determinants of higher education quality in Afghanistan based on insights from student perceptions. Understanding this part holds paramount importance in enunciating sound policies for the smooth functioning of the higher education sector of Afghanistan.

Design/methodology/approach

This study aims to classify students' background and demographic data, distinguishing their perception of higher education quality using a deductive research approach. A sample of 418 students from five top private universities in Afghanistan was chosen to assess their perceptions of higher education dimensions by employing a multinomial regression analysis.

Findings

The findings indicate that extracurricular activities, students' scholarship status, parents' education, age, previous academic results and the university they attend significantly impact their perception of the quality of higher education.

Practical implications

This research is essential for education policymakers and university administrators. These findings can be replicated to develop regulations and target specific groups of students to ensure a favourable academic environment and boost the brand image of their universities. This would ensure long-term quality improvement and assurance outcomes, allowing higher education institutions to compete with regional and international institutions.

Originality/value

This study contributes to identifying the determinants of higher education quality based on the perceptions of the students in Afghanistan.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the direct effect of intellectual capital on the organizational performance of Indonesian state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and their subsidiaries. Furthermore, it also examines whether the relationship is mediated by open innovation and moderated by organizational inertia.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is designed as quantitative research. A survey method is employed to collect data by distributing questionnaires to the upper-level managers of the SOEs and their subsidiaries. A total of 293 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents, and 97 responses were obtained for further analysis. The partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) is used to test the hypotheses. A mediation-moderation research framework is employed.

Findings

The results show that intellectual capital has a positive effect on organizational performance. Further results also demonstrate that open innovation mediates the intellectual capital–organizational performance relationship and organizational inertia moderates the intellectual capital–organizational performance relationship. Theoretically, the findings contribute to the resource-based view (RBV) and knowledge-based view (KBV) by providing empirical evidence of the importance of distinctive internal resources in achieving superior organizational performance. Practically, the findings provide strategic information for managers that they should properly manage intellectual capital, open innovation and organizational inertia because of their effects on organizational performance.

Originality/value

First, this study addresses the previous research gaps by confirming that intellectual capital has a positive effect on organizational performance in the research setting of an emerging market. Second, by using a mediation research framework, this study shows that open innovation mediates the relationship between intellectual capital and organizational performance. Third, by using a moderating research framework, this study also reveals that organizational inertia weakens the relationship between intellectual capital and organizational performance. Those associations are rarely researched.
