Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report effect of rotation of micropolar thermoelastic solid with microtemperatures heated by laser pulses. The problem was solved analytically to obtain the expressions of the physical quantities.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical method used was the normal mode.

Findings

Numerical results for the physical quantities were presented graphically and the results were analyzed. The comparisons were established in variant cases of the effects used and then shown graphically.

Originality/value

In the present work, the authors shall discuss the effect of rotation and temperature-dependent properties with the laser pulses in the micropolar thermoelastic medium with microtemperatures. This problem is very important in more empirical branches such as the human body and earthquake engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of the gravity and the magnetic fields on the plane waves in a homogenous, linear and isotropic thermoelastic medium subjected to the laser pulse heating.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem has been solved analytically and numerically by using the normal mode analysis.

Findings

Numerical results for the temperature, the displacement components, the stress components and the volume fraction were presented graphically and analyzed the results. The graphical results indicate that the effect of gravity and magnetic fields are observable physical effects on the porous thermoelastic material heated by a laser pulse. Comparisons are made with the results in the absence and presence of the gravity and the magnetic fields, also at various times.

Originality/value

In the present work, the authors shall formulate a 2-D problem for the propagation of plane waves on the porous thermoelastic material influenced by the gravity and the magnetic fields subjected to a laser pulse heating act as a thermal shock. A comparison is also made between the two types II and III of Green-Naghdi theory in the absence and the presence of the gravity and the magnetic fields. Such problems are very important in many dynamical systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical method used was the normal mode analysis technique.

Findings

Numerical results for the physical quantities were presented graphically and analyzed. The graphical results indicate that the effect of rotation, initial stress and magnetic fields are observable physical effects on the thermoelastic material with voids heated by a laser pulse. Comparisons are made with the results in the absence and the presence of the physical operators, also at various times.

Originality/value

In the present work, the authors shall investigate the effect of the rotation, initial stress, magnetic field and laser pulse on thermoelastic material with voids subjected to a laser pulse heating acting as a thermal shock. A comparison is also made between the two types (types II and III) of Green-Naghdi theory in the absence and the presence of the physical operators. Such problems are very important in many dynamical systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of rotation and gravity on a homogeneous, isotropic, and generalized thermo-viscoelastic material with voids. The problem is studied in the context of the coupled theory, Lord-Shulman theory with one relaxation time, and Green-Lindsay theory with two relaxation times.

Design/methodology/approach

The analytical method used was the normal mode analysis technique.

Findings

Numerical results for the physical quantities were analyzed and presented graphically. The graphical results indicated that the effects of rotation and gravity were observable physical effects on the thermo-viscoelastic material with voids. Comparisons were made between the results obtained in the absence and presence of rotation and gravity.

Originality/value

In the present work, the authors investigated the effect of rotation and gravity on thermo-viscoelastic medium with voids. Comparisons were also made between the three theories in the absence and the presence of rotation and gravity. Such problems are very important in many dynamical systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the propagation of plane waves in an isotropic elastic medium under the effect of rotation, magnetic field and temperature-dependent properties with two‐temperatures.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem has been solved analytically by using the normal mode analysis.

Findings

The numerical results are given and presented graphically when mechanical and thermal force are applied. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by the three-phase-lag (3PHL) model and dual-phase-lag model in the presence and absence of cases where the modulus of elasticity is independent of temperature.

Originality/value

In this work, the authors study the influence of rotation and magnetic field with two‐temperature on thermoelastic isotropic medium when the modulus of elasticity is taken as a linear function of reference temperature in the context of the 3PHL model. The numerical results for the field quantities are obtained and represented graphically.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between the spread of extremist thoughts and the weak economic and social factors surrounding it. There are higher chances of better understanding of this relationship on Egypt’s borders more than its center. Achieving development and stability leads to creating a preventive environment to extremist thoughts existence and spread, in addition to preventing its transformation into terrorism.

Design/methodology/approach

The study depends on an analytical methodology to examine the validity of the research hypothesis through two basic steps. The first step depends on describing the geographical, demographical, economic, social, political and security aspects of North Sinai. The second step is a prospective approach to build a strategy that helps in achieving development and accordingly a comprehensive confront for the opportunities of extremist thought spreading in North Sinai.

Findings

The study concludes that Egypt is well aware of the dimensions of encountering extremist thoughts and has adopted a comprehensive approach in achieving this. It has already started the paces of this confrontation in general, with some specificity in North Sinai Governorate that observed lately increased activities by extremists and terrorist groups. The proposed strategy is a set of policies that can help the country achieve its goals against extremism and terrorism.

Research limitations/implications

The study covers a time frame that starts from 2014, which is considered the beginning of a new phase for the Egyptian state. The study relies on the field of strategic studies and it focuses on North Sinai Governorate.

Originality/value

The study has a scientific importance because it presents a proposal for a comprehensive strategy to encounter extremist thoughts, which adds value to the literature of the study of extremism. The current study makes its contributions in some directions, such as reviewing the contents of this extremist thought or the juristic comment on it, the impacts of the spread of extremist thoughts, the role of the official media in disseminating extremist thoughts or standing up to it. In terms of application, the study presents a proposal with many policies in various fields to counter extremist ideology. These proposals are implementable in North Sinai Governorate as well as other frontier governorates.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a reflective discussion on the different avenues of blockchain application in Islamic finance in promoting trust and transparency for increased accountability between parties involved in the delivery of Sharīʿah-compliant products and services.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper discusses on blockchain benefits in Islamic finance while providing an illustration with smart Sukuk. Having identified the advantages of the development of Islamic financial technology (i-FinTech), this study ends by debating a couple of challenges (computational codification of Sharīʿah principles and environmental impact) that have to be addressed to promote the development of a real sustainable Islamic FinTech.

Findings

This paper also identifies two challenges in using blockchain in i-Fintech. The first challenge refers to the extent to which Sharīʿah principles can be computationally encoded. Blockchain makes public all transactions that ease Sharīʿah compliance checks and determine if these transactions are Islamic in nature but this check can be done only after their operation. The second challenge is related to the algorithmic protocol used to validate smart contracts (including smart Sukuk). This situation calls into question the principles of Maqasid al-Sharīʿah according to which transactions should not harm society.

Originality/value

In the current debates related to the development of Islamic FinTech, this paper also identifies two challenges in using blockchain in i-Fintech.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine why the alliance formed between non-Islamist forces and state actors to oust Mohamed Morsi from power in 2013 broke down quickly.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper makes use of original data set derived from three waves of surveys fielded in 2011, 2014 and 2015 that ask questions about public threat perception. Around 10 elite interviews were also conducted to further test the study’s hypothesis.

Findings

On the one hand, non-Islamists, civic forces challenged the status and interests of state actors in a way that made state actors view them with heightened distrust. On the other, many civic forces, in face of high threat perception, prioritized law during and order after Morsi’s removal, driven – at least partly – by shifts in public attitudes.

Originality/value

Many views look at transitions in the Arab world from the angle of how Islamists interact with traditional power holders. Such an approach, however, could be reductionist in many ways because it disregards civic forces. This is a point this paper seeks to address.
