Abstract
Purpose
A newly developed frequency-independent lumped parameter model (LPM) is the purpose of the present paper. This new model’s direct outcome ensures high efficiency and a straightforward calculation of foundations’ vertical vibrations. A rigid circular foundation shape resting on a nonhomogeneous half-space subjected to a vertical time-harmonic excitation is considered.
Design/methodology/approach
A simple model representing the soil–foundation system consists of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system incorporating a lumped mass linked to a frequency-independent spring and dashpot. Besides that, an additional fictitious mass is incorporated into the SDOF system. Several numerical methods and mathematical techniques are used to identify each SDOF’s parameter: (1) the vertical component of the static and dynamic foundation impedance function is calculated. This dynamic interaction problem is solved by using a formulation combining the boundary element method and the thin layer method, which allows the simulation of any complex nonhomogeneous half-space configuration. After, one determines the static stiffness’s expression of the circular foundation resting on a nonhomogeneous half-space. (2) The system’s parameters (dashpot coefficient and fictitious mass) are calculated at the resonance frequency; and (3) using a curve fitting technique, the general formulas of the frequency-independent dashpot coefficients and additional fictitious mass are established.
Findings
Comparisons with other results from a rigorous formulation were made to verify the developed model’s accuracy; these are exceptional cases of the more general problems that can be addressed (problems like shallow or embedded foundations of arbitrary shape, other vibration modes, etc.).
Originality/value
In this new LPM, the impedance functions will no longer be needed. The engineer only needs a limited number of input parameters (geometrical and mechanical characteristics of the foundation and the soil). Moreover, a simple calculator is required (i.e. we do not need any sophisticated software).

Abstract
Purpose
Several studies were made on paired site and soil–structure interaction (SSI) effects, but most of them were site specific. This paper aims to investigate the impact of SSI effects in conjunction with local soil condition effects on the seismic response of typical multistory low- to mid-rise–reinforced concrete (RC) buildings resting on Algerian regulatory design sites through a global explicit transfer function (TF).
Design/methodology/approach
A preliminary quantification of SSI effects associated with site effects is carried out through a frequency-domain solution based on the concept of rock-to-soil surface displacement TF performed for each design site category. It results from the combination of the TFs of structure, foundation and soil and reflects how seismic waves are amplified due to changes in the geological contrast between the rock and overlying soil deposits. As well, response modification factors, denoting displacement ratios of the building responses within the flexible and site-structure conditions with respect to the fixed-base one, are carried out.
Findings
In the context of Algerian seismic regulation, the study provides a clear vision of how and when site or SSI effects are expected to be influential, as opposed to the fixed-base hypothesis still retained by the current regulation. This helps engineers to be aware of the extent of the expected seismic damage.
Research limitations/implications
The research applies to low- to mid-rise RC buildings within the Algerian seismic regulation, but it may also be expanded to other examples that fall under other seismic regulations.
Practical implications
The response modification ratio is a quantitative approach to assessing response fluctuations. It draws attention to how the roof level drift varies depending on the condition. These results can be used as numerical parameters in structural seismic design when the structure is comparable because they provide useful information about how the two phenomena interact with the structure.
Originality/value
The study goes beyond particular situations dealing with site specific and offers effective indicators and quantitative evaluation of combined site and SSI effects according to the current national seismic provisions, where no indication about site or SSI effects exists.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to simplify a new frequency-independent model to calculate vertical vibration of rigid circular foundation resting on homogenous half-space and subjected to vertical harmonic excitation is presented in this paper.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed model is an oscillator of single degree of freedom, which comprises a mass, a spring and a dashpot. In addition, a fictitious mass is added to the foundation. All coefficients are frequency-independent. The spring is equal to the static stiffness. Damping coefficient and fictitious mass are first calculated at resonance frequency where the response is maximal. Then, using a curve fitting technique the general formulas of damping and fictitious mass frequency-independent are established.
Findings
The validity of the proposed method is checked by comparing the predicted response with those obtained by the half-space theory. The dynamic responses of the new simplified model are also compared with those obtained by some existing lumped-parameter models.
Originality/value
Using this new method, to calculate the dynamic response of foundations, the engineer only needs the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of the foundation (mass and radius) and the soil (density, shear modulus and the Poisson’s ratio) using just a simple calculator. Impedance functions will no longer be needed in this new simplified method. The methodology used for the development of the new simplified model can be applied for the resolution of other problems in dynamics of soil and foundation (superficial and embedded foundations of arbitrary shape, other modes of vibration and foundations resting on non-homogeneous soil).

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present the investigation of the linear and nonlinear seismic site response of a saturated inhomogeneous poroviscoelastic soil profile for different soil properties, such as pore-water saturation, non-cohesive fines content FC, permeability k, porosity n and coefficient of uniformity Cu.
Design/methodology/approach
The inhomogeneous soil profile is idealized as a multi-layered saturated poroviscoelastic medium and is characterized by the Biot’s theory, with a shear modulus varying continuously with depth according to the Wichtmann’s model. Seismic response analysis has been evaluated through a computational model, which is based on the exact stiffness matrix method formulated in the frequency domain assuming that the incoming seismic waves consist of inclined P-SV waves.
Findings
Unlike the horizontal seismic response, the results indicate that the vertical one is strongly affected by the pore water saturation. Moreover, in the case of fully saturated soil profile, the same vertical response spectra are found for the two cases of soil behavior, linear and nonlinear.
Originality/value
This research is a detailed study of the geotechnical soil properties effect on the bi-directional seismic response of saturated inhomogeneous poroviscoelastic soil profile, which has not been treated before; the results are presented in terms of the peak acceleration ratio, as well as the free-field response spectra and the spectral ratio (V/H).

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the implementation of Lean bundles on hospital performance in private hospitals in Jordan and evaluate how much the size of organization can affect the relationship between Lean bundles implementation and hospital performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The research is considered as quantitative method (descriptive and hypothesis testing). Three statistical techniques were adopted to analyse the data. Structural equation modeling techniques and multi-group analysis were used to examine the research’s hypothesis, and to perform the required statistical analysis of the data from the survey. Reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to test the construct validity, reliability and measurement loadings that were performed.
Findings
Lean bundles have been identified as an effective approach that can dramatically improve the organizational performance of private hospitals in Jordan. Main Lean bundles – just in time, human resource management, and total quality management are applicable to large, small and medium hospitals without significant differences in advantages that depend on size.
Originality/value
According to the researchers’ best knowledge, this is the first research that studies the impact of Lean bundles implementation in healthcare sector in Jordan. This research also makes a significant contribution for decision makers in healthcare to increase their awareness of Lean bundles.

Purpose
Despite the significance of donations (Sadaqah) via mobile payment in Islamic countries, little is known about the variables influencing continuance intention toward using m-payment for donations (Sadaqah). Based on the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) model, this research explores the influence of perceived quality (i.e. system, information, service) as a stimulus on customer satisfaction, engagement and delight as organisms, which then affects continuance intention toward using m-payment for donations (Sadaqah) as a response. Moreover, the study investigates the moderating role of Islamic religiosity.
Design/methodology/approach
Using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), a representative data sample of 419 Egyptian Muslims was analyzed to test hypotheses.
Findings
The findings revealed that all perceived quality constructs significantly positively affect customers' satisfaction. Customer satisfaction, in turn, positively affects customer engagement and delight. Moreover, customer engagement, delight and Islamic religiosity significantly positively affect continuance intention toward using m-payment for donations (Sadaqah). The findings also revealed that Islamic religiosity moderates the influence of customer engagement and customer delight on continuance intention toward using m-payment for donations (Sadaqah).
Originality/value
This is the first study to examine using m-payment for donations (Sadaqah) in an Islamic environment based on the S-O-R model.

Purpose
The primary objective of this research is to introduce a pioneering takaful model that provides both provision and protection to the aging population by combining the concept of cash waqf with takaful. This model is designed to align with Shariah principles, ensuring sustainability and enduring impact.
Design/methodology/approach
This research adopts a qualitative methodology, where a focus group discussion was conducted with six stakeholders. The participants consisted of takaful operators, legal experts and other industry players. The participants were presented with the proposed cash waqf takaful model and their feedback was recorded. Legal issues related to linking waqf with takaful were also identified and discussed.
Findings
The study highlights the need for innovative financial solutions to support Malaysia's aging population. It proposes a cash waqf takaful model, leveraging crowd funding for sustainability. Legal hurdles and recommendations for overcoming them are discussed, along with suggestions for future research on quantitative validation and regulatory frameworks. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the holistic approach of the proposed model in addressing the well-being of Malaysia's senior citizens.
Practical implications
The proposed takaful model presents opportunities for takaful operators to integrate Islamic social finance into their operations, enabling easier access to takaful for the elderly community. By eliminating financial barriers, it can transform the takaful landscape, ensuring inclusivity and financial security for aging populations. Moreover, policymakers see it as a blueprint for sustainable financial solutions and social welfare enhancement globally.
Originality/value
The study introduces a novel cash waqf takaful model to support Malaysia's aging population, leveraging crowdfunding for sustainability. It addresses legal challenges unique to Malaysia and proposes collaboration with State Islamic Religious Authorities. Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to study the complex behavior of a dynamical system using fractional and fractal-fractional (FF) derivative operators. The non-classical derivatives are extremely useful for investigating the hidden behavior of the systems. The Atangana–Baleanu (AB) and Caputo–Fabrizio (CF) derivatives are considered for the fractional structure of the model. Further, to add more complexity, the authors have taken the system with a CF fractal-fractional derivative having an exponential kernel. The active control technique is also considered for chaos control.
Design/methodology/approach
The systems under consideration are solved numerically. The authors show the Adams-type predictor-corrector scheme for the AB model and the Adams–Bashforth scheme for the CF model. The convergence and stability results are given for the numerical scheme. A numerical scheme for the FF model is also presented. Further, an active control scheme is used for chaos control and synchronization of the systems.
Findings
Simulations of the obtained solutions are displayed via graphics. The proposed system exhibits a very complex phenomenon known as chaos. The importance of the fractional and fractal order can be seen in the presented graphics. Furthermore, chaos control and synchronization between two identical fractional-order systems are achieved.
Originality/value
This paper mentioned the complex behavior of a dynamical system with fractional and fractal-fractional operators. Chaos control and synchronization using active control are also described.

Purpose
This research aimed to maximize the value of date exports for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Design/methodology/approach
To achieve its objective, this study relied on secondary data and quantitative economic analysis represented by the Linear programming model.
Findings
This study showed that Saudi Arabia exports dates to the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Kuwait, Turkey, Somalia, Jordan, Oman, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh Morocco, Lebanon, and others. The geographical concentration coefficient for the quantity and value of date exports was 35.05% and 34.74%, respectively, during the study period. Saudi Arabia exported a quantity of dates amounting to 83.08 thousand tons, representing 40.57% of the average total amount of Saudi dates exports during the study period, to Yemen, Somalia, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt, China, Djibouti, Bahrain, and Ethiopia, at prices lower than the average export price of 1200.31 dollars/ton, and therefore the export policy needs to restructure the geographical distribution of date exports. Based on the models of geographical distribution, Saudi date exports value can be increased by 32.76–127.12 million dollars, meaning can be increased by 13.77% – 53.44%. In light of the results of the proposed models, this study recommends the need to restructure the geographical distribution of Saudi date exports so that the value of Saudi date exports can be increased by 127.12 million dollars from the current situation for the period 2017–2021.
Originality/value
The paper’s original contribution lies in its proposal to restructure the geographical distribution of Saudi date exports to increase the value of exports.
