Abstract

Studies carried out in different plant species have revealed that Cd is strongly phytotoxic and causes growth inhibition and even plant death, although the mechanisms involved in its toxicity are still not completely understood. The present investigation is aimed at highlighting some of the problems related to Cd and trying to answer some of the questions that have arisen as a consequence of Cd behaviour and its toxic nature to plant species. The culture experiment of beans Phaseolus vulgaris was carried out in a hydroponic solution with variable Cd concentrations to determine the effects of different concentrations of Cd on photosynthesis and chlorophyll content. Chlorosis was the primary symptom caused by Cd toxic levels and this led to the study of its causes by investigating the effect of Cd on Chlorophyll formation and its content in plants. In that respect, one question appeared to be important about the nature of the effect of Cd on chlorophyll and Mg concentration was the first conclusion obtained on the basis of evidence achieved from analysis of the chlorophyll content by atomic absorption and ultra violet spectroscopy.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between global economic fluctuations and human development through four transmission channels (foreign direct investment (FDI), official development aid (ODA), remittances and export earnings) in Egypt as an open developing economy, in the period 1990–2015.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses a vector autoregressive model, which implies examining the impulse response functions and variance decompositions.

Findings

The results indicate that human development is negatively affected by global economic fluctuations through the four channels, namely, ODA, FDI, export earnings and remittances. In addition, the most effective transmission channels are FDI in the short run and export earnings in the long run.

Originality/value

While a large body of literature addresses the direct impact of business cycles and economic shocks on human development, only some studies focus on the indirect impact. The contribution is to identify the indirect impact of global economic fluctuations on human development in a developing economy, considering four transmission channels and to determine the most important of these channels. Moreover, using the human development index is an addition in this paper as most previous literature depends on other human development indicators such as children’s health, employment and schooling.

Abstract

Purpose

Seasonal influenza epidemics accounted for significant morbidity and mortality loads worldwide despite the availability of a safe vaccine as an efficient tool against severity of the disease. However, the uptake of the latter was sub-optimal. This study aims to identify predictors and barriers related to seasonal influenza vaccine uptake in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional study enrolled 502 individuals attending primary healthcare centers in Bahrain for ambulatory care between July and August 2022. The data were collected using an interviews-based questionnaire which included questions on demographic data, knowledge and attitudes and practices toward influenza vaccine. The authors identified the barriers as well as the determinants of the vaccine uptake and its recommendation to others.

Findings

The mean age of participants was 35.07 years (SD = 13.9). Most of the respondents were Bahraini (86.5%) and 53.4 % were females. The results revealed that 34.1% have previous information about the influenza vaccine and 36.9% versus 69.9% are willing to receive the vaccine or advice it to others, respectively. Determinants of vaccine uptake were identified.

Originality/value

This study confirmed a sub-optimal influenza vaccine acceptance in the general community of Bahrain despite a global access in primary care. Health professionals need to be more proactive in mobilizing the community and particularly females toward influenza vaccination.

Abstract

Purpose

This study adopts the perspective of dynamic capabilities to investigate influencing factors and proposes improvement strategies of supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural equation model (SEM) is used to identify and verify the relationship between factors influencing supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction from the perspective of dynamic capabilities. The system dynamics (SD) model is constructed to dynamically simulate the specific effects of different influencing factors.

Findings

Results indicate that: (1) An evaluation index system for supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction containing five first-level indicators and 36 second-level indicators is constructed; (2) Ability to anticipate, ability to respond, ability to adapt, ability to recover and ability to learn are positively correlated with the supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction and (3) ANT3 (information system), RES1 (quick response), ADA3 (buffer stock) and LEA4 (trust) are the most leading factors influencing supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction over time.

Originality/value

This study fulfills the need for an in-depth exploration of the various influencing factors on supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction from the perspective of dynamic capabilities. Furthermore, this study provides improvement strategies to enhance supply chain resilience of prefabricated construction in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The unique nature, complicated design, hazardous activities and complex work environment involved in the high-rise construction projects constitute significant risks worldwide. In the Indian context, construction safety management in high-rise construction projects is crucial due to the presence of significant occupational risks and hazards at the workplace. Occupational hazards lead to accidents that severely affect human health and result in substantial financial losses.

Design/methodology/approach

The study aims to present a hybrid risk assessment method (RAM) and the technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method to detect and evaluate occupational risks in different construction activities through a questionnaire survey approach.

Findings

Aroundsix types of construction activities and corresponding ten risks are identified and evaluated during the study. Based on the calculation of risk scores, the findings imply that “roof work activities,” “finishing work,” “mechanical, electrical and plumbing work (MEP)” are hazardous construction activities, while, among the corresponding ten risks, “workers falling from height” is the most prominent risk among the majority of activities. Other risks include “risk due to fire and electric accidents” and “struck by falling objects,” which are the major risks in high-rise construction projects.

Originality/value

Theoriginality of the paper lies in its activity-based risk assessment and ranking of hazards in high-rise construction projects. By integrating theoretical insights with practical applications, the study attempts to enhance occupational safety and reduce accidents on construction sites, thereby significantly contributing to both academia and industry practices.

Abstract

Purpose

Policymakers are developing national strategic plans to encourage organizations to adopt Construction 4.0 technologies. However, organizations often adopt the recommended technologies without aligning with organizational vision. Furthermore, there is no prioritization on which Construction 4.0 technology should be adopted, including the impact of the technologies on different criteria such as safety and health. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate Construction 4.0 technologies listed in a national strategic plan that targets the enhancement of safety and health.

Design/methodology/approach

A list of Construction 4.0 technologies from a national strategic plan is evaluated using the fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method. Then, the data are analyzed using reliability, fuzzy TOPSIS, normalization, Pareto, sensitivity, ranking and correlation analyses.

Findings

The analyses identified six Construction 4.0 technologies that are critical in enhancing safety and health: Internet of Things, autonomous construction, big data and predictive analytics, artificial Intelligence, building information modeling and augmented reality and virtualization. In addition, six pairs of Construction 4.0 technologies illustrate strong relationships.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by ranking a list of Construction 4.0 technologies in a national strategic plan that targets the enhancement of safety and health. Decision-makers can use the study findings to prioritize the technologies during the adoption process. Also, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the impact of Construction 4.0 technologies listed in a national strategic plan on a specific criterion.
