Abstract

Purpose

In 2008, the world had undergone a global economic crisis. Since women always face greater difficulties in obtaining capital than men, the economic crisis had a greater effect on them. The purpose of this paper is to examine the implications of the global crisis for women's entrepreneurship, from the perspective of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews studies on gender differences in entrepreneurship, focusing on 2007 and 2008 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) studies that examined the rates of entrepreneurship in 43 countries.

Findings

The data show that in all 43 countries, the rates of women's entrepreneurship are lower than men's. Furthermore, the percent of women entrepreneurs is higher in countries where the general income per capita is small and where women have no other option for making a living.

Research limitations/implications

This surprising finding has been explained as a result of the difference between “necessity” and “opportunity” entrepreneurship, with necessity entrepreneurship found to be more prevalent among women in poor countries, thus pointing to the role played by inequality and exclusion in women's entrepreneurial inferiority.

Practical implications

From the perspective of diversity, equality and inclusion, entrepreneurship can be viewed as a means for inclusion of women and other marginalized groups in countries, especially low‐income countries, in which they suffer from lack of equal opportunities and social exclusion.

Originality/value

The paper usefully shows how, especially in times of a global crisis, the role played by inequality and exclusion in women's entrepreneurial inferiority has important implications; such as the need to create special funds for women and the importance of establishing social and business networks for women entrepreneurs.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to examine the effect of government intervention programs in improving the occupational opportunities of new immigrants as self‐employed entrepreneurs or salaried employees, and to determine the effect, if any, of gender and ethnicity.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the effects of two major types of government programs – retraining courses and support for business creation – a sample of 1,195 immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Israel were interviewed in depth on two different occasions.

Findings

The findings indicate that the impact of both government programs was more pronounced for women immigrants and immigrants from the Asian republics.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses only on two government programs in one country – Israel.

Practical implications

In terms of immigrant incorporation into a society, government programs matter and matter more for disadvantaged groups. Participation in these programs helps diminish any gaps created by market forces.

Originality/value

This study adds to the immigration literature on state intervention by assessing the contribution of government programs and intervention to immigrants’ occupational incorporation.

Despite the continuous rise in the establishment of technology-based start-ups (TSUs), the reported statistics indicate high failure rates for these ventures. This has led to a large body of research literature dealing with the identification and assessment of factors affecting TSU performance. Most studies have focused on various business variables or other business areas, including financial aspects, marketing issues, strategic planning, the technological development process, operational and quality management issues, timing of entry, lack of individual knowledge and ability during the founding process (Gartner, Starr, & Bhat, 1999), difficulties in managing the legal aspects, failure to establish and develop the relevant networks with key customers and suppliers (Roure & Maidique, 1986; Roure & Keeley, 1990; Littunen, 2000) and the failure to invest in learning (Schilling, 1998).

Abstract

Time considerations are an important element of entrepreneurial processes in organizations. The current study analyzes the interface between time and entrepreneurship in the firm, examining the relationships between organizational time norms that are shaped by the firm and individual time structures that reflect individual personality differences and how individuals perceive and interpret the organizational time norms. The study seeks to determine if, how, which, and to what extent organizational time norms and individual time structures impact employees’ attitudes toward undertaking entrepreneurial activities and practices related to corporate entrepreneurship in the organization. The chapter develops a model and five hypotheses that are empirically tested in an Israeli manufacturing company that encouraged its employees to pursue entrepreneurial activities within the company. The findings show that, as hypothesized, individual time structures moderate the relationship between organizational time norms and undertaking corporate entrepreneurial activities. It was found that under loose (flexible) organizational time norms, employees with defined time structures generated entrepreneurial proposals. In contrast, employees with vague time structures did not produce entrepreneurial proposals. The results highlight the importance of matching employee time structures with their firm's time norms as a means of promoting corporate entrepreneurial activities.

Abstract

This article examines whether the field of entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly institutionalized by examining market trends, AACSB jobs, and salaries. The findings indicate that the field is becoming increasingly institutionalized through market trends. During 2014/15, there were 471 advertised positions and 163 candidates in Schools of Business and Management. The number of tenure track positions (261) was significantly higher than the number of tenure track candidates (161) for a ratio of 1.62. This is the highest ratio of tenure track positions to candidates since 2005/06 (2.1). Out of the 261 tenure track positions, 174 were at AACSB institutions.The ratio of tenure track positions at AACSB schools per tenure track candidate was 1.08. The study also looked at average salaries at AACSB schools and found them to be competitive with other mainstream areas. Average salaries were: full professors ($162,000), associate professor ($131,400), assistant professor ($113,600), instructor ($85,800), and new doctorates ($97,800).

Abstract

This tenth volume in the series Advances in Entrepreneurship, Firm Emergence, and Growth focuses on entrepreneurial strategic processes. Papers related to strategic processes in entrepreneurship have been a recurring feature of the Advances series, starting with the second volume, which included Slevin and Covin's (1995) article of record on entrepreneurial strategic behavior, as well as process-related strategy articles by Carsrud and Kruerger (1995) and Bloodgood, Sapienza, and Carsrud (1995). Subsequent explorations included Volume 7's material on corporate entrepreneurship, Fernhaber and McDougall's (2005) work on strategic adaptation in Volume 8, as well as Salvato, Lassini, and Wiklund's (2006) acquisition process model and Samuelsson's innovative-imitative process comparison in Volume 9. Common to all of these has been the central intent of the strategy approach: the pursuit of organizational success.

Much research claims that immigrant women's entrepreneurship in Western capitalist societies is embedded in the structural and cultural attributes of receiving societies. Other studies maintain that the structural and cultural traits of immigrant groups explain women's entrance into this type of business activity. Together, this body of research underestimates those individual attributes embedded in human agency, in the personalities of immigrant women, that encourage them to engage in this type of business enterprise.
