Abstract

Purpose

Information sharing is one of essential collaboration methods for building effective system-level disruption responses and communication for supply chain resilience. However, supply chain members are often reluctant to share the members' business information for fear of losing competitiveness. To facilitate the cooperation among these members, the supply chain members' should be made aware of the value of information. As a result, the purpose of this paper is to quantify the benefit of information sharing and evaluate its magnitude under various factors.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, information sharing is measured in a two-stage supply chain containing a manufacturer and a retailer. A demand function is constructed as a linear combination of a first-order autoregressive [AR(1)] process, the retail and reference prices. The values of information sharing are quantified for four scenarios: (1) no information sharing, (2) full information sharing, (3) limited information sharing and (4) partial information sharing. Based on the four scenarios, the conditions for valuable information sharing are determined. In addition, the impact of several demand parameters on the usefulness of information sharing is analyzed.

Findings

When the demand function is a pure AR(1) process (i.e. there is no impact from the retail and reference prices), information sharing is always valuable regardless of the autoregressive coefficient. Under the influence of the retail price and consumer behavior via the reference price, information sharing is not always beneficial. The boundaries for useful information sharing are analytically constructed. In addition to full information sharing, this study also quantifies the value of information under a partial sharing scheme. The results indicate that the information is more valuable as long as the information is inducible.

Originality/value

This study highlights several specific conditions for a beneficial information sharing agreement in consideration of consumer behaviors. These conditions enable supply chain members to design a sustainable partnership.

Abstract

Purpose

Using protest event analysis, this study aims to investigate which risk factors influence the severity of environmental protests in China, thus filling a gap in China-related environmental protest literature.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a database derived from media coverage of 129 environmental protests in China from 2009 to 2015, this empirical study identifies underlying risk factors influencing environmental protest severity, quantifies these protest cases and verifies the associations between risk factors and severity using ordered logistic regression.

Findings

The results show that higher environmental health threat, economic loss, distrust of local government, lack of local governmental response, improper local government action and higher population density are likely to increase environmental protest severity; however, contrary to expectations, environmental information disclosure has no significant effect. These findings illuminate the vital and variational role of local government throughout all stages of the evolutionary process in environmental protests. Moreover, public distrust of local government is the principal cause of these protests.

Originality/value

This study enhances the understanding of how Chinese environmental protests arise from the identified risk factors and contributes to quantitative multi-case research in this area. Furthermore, the findings may help local governments in China, as well as in other countries, to enact positive measures to prevent serious environmental protests and improve their ability to address the environmental problems that cause protests. More effective governance can decrease the number and severity of environmental protests and thus promote social stability.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the effect of traditional shot peening (SP), laser shock peening (LSP) and water jet cavitation peening (WJP) on microstructure evolution and corrosion behavior of austenitic stainless steels 316L and 304.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of SP, LSP and WJP on corrosion behavior of 316L and 304 were discussed in terms of surface peening–induced change in surface roughness, stress state and grain size.

Findings

Residual compressive stress and grain refinement were introduced after SP, LSP and WJP treatment in 316L and 304 stainless steels. Superior corrosion resistance can be obtained by WJP compared with SP and LSP.

Originality/value

The relationship between SP-, LSP- and WJP-induced change in microstructure and stress state and corrosion resistance was summarized.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to understand the effect of water jet cavitation peening (WJP) on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) behavior of alloy 600 and alloy 182 in high temperature water.

Design/methodology/approach

Surface and cross-section morphology, grain boundary microstructure, residual stress and strain distribution, hardness and surface roughness in water jet cavitation peened alloy 600 and alloy 182 were characterized.

Findings

A superior stress corrosion cracking resistance was obtained in 600MA, which can be attributed to the formation of the ultrafine grain layer and the higher magnitude residual compressive stress.

Originality/value

Relationship between WJP-induced microstructure and stress state change and SCC susceptibility was conducted. It could provide a theoretical basis for developing application of WJP in nuclear power plants.

Abstract

Institutional actors are critical allies for grassroots movements, but few studies have examined their effects and variations within the non-democratic context. This chapter argues that while institutional allies are heavily constrained and unlikely to give open endorsement to grassroot activists, some institutional activists indirectly facilitate movement mobilization and favorable outcomes in the process of advancing their own political agendas. Drawing upon in-depth interviews conducted in 2008 and 2012, I illustrate this argument by examining the Anti-PX Movement – a landmark grassroots environmental movement against a chemical plant – in Xiamen, China. I find that the environmental institutional actors were constrained and divided, yet some still fostered opportunities for movement mobilization and in turn exploited the opportunity created by the protesters to pursue their policy interests, thus facilitating positive movement outcomes. As long as the claims are not politically subversive to the authoritarian rule, this type of tacit and tactical interaction between institutional activists within the state and grassroot activists on the street is conducive to promoting progressive policy changes.

Abstract

Using bibliometrics to examine eight core journals in the year 2000 for the disciplines of higher education and library science, characteristics of the authors were determined, including gender or sex; Carnegie Classification or institutional affiliation; and position of the authors. Characteristics of the articles were also examined, including the research methods used such as descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, or qualitative analysis. A content analysis of each article was performed to determine the subjects discussed in each literature. For both disciplines, it was learned that males publish more, the highest Carnegie Classification, extensive research institutions, were represented the most, and authors came from academic departments other than their own disciplines. In higher education, inferential statistics were used frequently; in library and information descriptive statistics were used frequently; both disciplines failed to use research methodologies regularly. From these findings, it appears that both disciplines are still emerging and are in their early stages of development.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a preliminary solution to address the problem of estimating human pose and trajectory by an aerial robot with a monocular camera in near real time.

Design/methodology/approach

The distinguishing feature of the solution is a dynamic classifier selection architecture. Each video frame is corrected for perspective using projective transformation. Then, a silhouette is extracted as a Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG). The HOG is then classified using a dynamic classifier. A class is defined as a pose-viewpoint pair, and a total of 64 classes are defined to represent a forward walking and turning gait sequence. The dynamic classifier consists of a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier C64 that recognizes all 64 classes, and 64 SVM classifiers that recognize four classes each – these four classes are chosen based on the temporal relationship between them, dictated by the gait sequence.

Findings

The solution provides three main advantages: first, classification is efficient due to dynamic selection (4-class vs 64-class classification). Second, classification errors are confined to neighbors of the true viewpoints. This means a wrongly estimated viewpoint is at most an adjacent viewpoint of the true viewpoint, enabling fast recovery from incorrect estimations. Third, the robust temporal relationship between poses is used to resolve the left-right ambiguities of human silhouettes.

Originality/value

Experiments conducted on both fronto-parallel videos and aerial videos confirm that the solution can achieve accurate pose and trajectory estimation for these different kinds of videos. For example, the “walking on an 8-shaped path” data set (1,652 frames) can achieve the following estimation accuracies: 85 percent for viewpoints and 98.14 percent for poses.

– This paper aims to explore if there is an analogous discipline in China to diplomatics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore if there is an analogous discipline in China to diplomatics.

Design/methodology/approach

A comparison method is used for the exploration. Five Chinese disciplines are chosen for the comparison, which are Wenxian xue, Bianwei xue, Dangan jianbian xue, Wenshu xue and Gu wenshu xue. The diplomatics, as discussed in this paper, is modern diplomatics, as exemplified in the work of Dr Luciana Duranti.

Findings

It was found that while there is no such Chinese discipline identical to diplomatics, its knowledge is distributed among several Chinese disciplines. This indicates the common concern and efforts in the West and East and the potential for the further development of diplomatics as a global discipline.

Research limitations/implications

The disciplines this paper has examined are what this author is aware of that share certain similarities with diplomatics and the discussion is based on this author’s understanding; thus, it is possible that there are disciplines that this author did not know or the understanding is insufficient to reveal all the connections between diplomatics and these disciplines. Further research from other perspectives might be needed.

Originality/value

To the author’s best knowledge, this is the first paper in English comparing Chinese diplomatic disciplines with diplomatics. It has also shed some light on the development of several Chinese disciplines.
