Abstract
Purpose
Workplace safety has been a persistent issue for safety-critical organizations. Based on self-verification theory, this study investigates how authentic leadership affects safety behaviors in a collectivistic context.
Design/methodology/approach
This research collected 259 matching questionnaires for high-speed railway (HSR) drivers and their supervisors in China. Specifically, HSR drivers were invited to fill in their general perceived authentic leadership, person-organization fit and collectivistic orientation. In addition, their direct supervisors were invited to assess their safety behaviors.
Findings
Authentic leadership exhibits a significant positive impact on safety compliance and safety participation, implying that authentic leadership positively impacts safety behavior. The person-organization fit partially mediated the relationship between authentic leadership and safety behavior (safety compliance and participation). Furthermore, collectivistic orientation moderates the relationship between authentic leadership and person-organization fit.
Originality/value
The findings of this study provide important insights into authentic leadership and person-organization fit for developing effective strategies to improve workplace safety.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the combined erosion and corrosion behavior of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating.
Design/methodology/approach
Al2O3 particles and 10 wt% NaCl solution are used to evaluate erosion and corrosion resistance of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating. Combined test of erosion and corrosion is also conducted. The microstructure of each specimen is characterized by the scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.
Findings
WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating layer is effective protective coating under combined erosion and corrosion environment. The weight loss of coating layer is more reduced as the cumulative test time.
Originality/value
WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings are investigated to check characteristic of the combined erosion and corrosion environment. WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings are kind of diffusion coating that attract attention because of the resistance of superb impact and corrosion in comparison with other coatings. Some previous researches reported the properties of vacuum brazed WC material. Erosion and corrosion behaviors of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coatings were studied in our previous research, respectively. Hence, in this research, the principal objective is to examine the combined erosion and corrosion behavior of WC-Ni vacuum brazed coating.

Abstract
Purpose
This study proposes the use of cumulative prospect theory (CPT) to predict over- and under-estimation of risks and the counteractive adjustment in a cold chain context. In particular, the purpose of this paper is to address the importance of the socio-demographic characteristics of an individual in influencing risk attitude and the analysis of measurable risk probability.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses CPT as the basis to develop a decision analysis model in which the two functions of value editing and probability weighting are nonlinear to adequately determine the flexible risk attitudes of individuals, as well as their prospects with numerous outcomes and different probabilities. An experiment was conducted to obtain empirical predictions, and an efficient Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm was applied to overcome the nonlinearity and dimensionality in the process of parameter estimation.
Findings
The respondents overweigh the minor cold chain risks with small probabilities and behave in a risk-averse manner, while underweighting major events with larger ones, thereby leading to risk-seeking behavior. Judgment distortion regarding probability was observed under risk decision with a low probability and a high impact. Moreover, the findings indicate that factors, such as gender, job familiarity and confidentiality significantly influence the risk attitudes and subjective probability weighting of the respondents.
Research limitations/implications
The findings fit the framework of CPT and extend this theory to deal with human risk attitudes and subjective bias in cold chains. In particular, this study enhances the literature by providing an analysis of cold chain risk from both the human decision-making and managerial perspectives. Moreover, this research determined the importance of the socio-demographic characteristics of an individual to explain the variability in risk attitudes and responses.
Practical implications
Managers must consider the issues of flexible risk attitude and subjective judgment when making choices for risk mitigation strategies. Given the focus on counteractive adjustment for over- and under-estimated risk, firms could evaluate cold chain risk more accurately, and thereby enhance their resilience to risky events while reducing the variability of their performance.
Originality/value
The current study is the first to materialize the phenomena of over- and under-estimation of cold chain risks, as well as to emphasize the different characteristics for loss aversion and judgment distortion at the individual level.

This study aims to identify significant pioneers and milestones in academic research through utilizing bibliometric methods and heterogeneous data, including textbook citations, citations of theses and dissertations, and journal citations.
Design/methodology/approach
This study proposes several methods and formulas for recommending Nobel prizes candidates. Through utilizing bibliometric methods and heterogeneous data, including textbook citations, citations of theses and dissertations, and journal article citations, this research facilitates the collection of numerous significant research results. The authors propose several new, useful formulae, including a pioneer paper impact factor, a popular classical paper impact factor, a ranking factor of specific fields, a groundbreaking author impact factor, and a frequently cited author impact factor.
Findings
This study utilizes historical information on the Nobel Prize to examine, revise, and verify existing methods for recommending and predicting candidates, in order to enhance the accuracy and availability of the approach presented by this study. The experimental results show that the approach designed in this study had a rate of successful prediction exceeding 50 percent. The major reason for producing reasonable results is that the milestone paper and pioneer paper are filtered first, and then the important candidate authors from the most pioneer paper are filtered. Therefore, the results indicated the feasibility of the methods developed by this study.
Originality/value
The purpose of the Nobel Prize is to reward original research findings or inventions that significantly and positively influence human life. However, due to budget limitations, only five fields are included in the academic domains for which Nobel prizes are awarded. The authors develop one useful new way to identify milestone papers and authors. Young students can choose, read and learn from these milestone papers. The pioneer authors identified by this research could be the recommended candidate list for some academic awards.

Purpose
Building upon the framework of glocalization, the purpose of this paper is to summarize the development of National Basketball Association (NBA) in Chinese market, explore its successful and unsuccessful places, and propose strategies of glocalization for the NBA as well as other overseas sport leagues.
Design/methodology/approach
The current case study was organized by summarizing the developmental history of NBA in China, analyzing its current promotional practices, investigating into its marketing strategies, and extrapolating practical references for other sport leagues aiming to penetrating into the Chinese marketplace.
Findings
The current case study concluded that when facing the current challenges, the NBA needs to bring authentic American cultural commodities while adding Chinese characteristics to accommodate local fans. Meanwhile, the NBA management needs to continue seeking ways to work out and through the differences in government models and cultural contexts between China and USA. In addition, this study suggested that the research framework of glocalization would be an ever intriguing inquiry needed for other sport organizations or leagues seeking expansion to overseas markets.
Originality/value
A thorough case study with the NBA that has achieved huge successes in Chinese markets will provide valuable implications for sport leagues to broaden their overseas markets.

Abstract
Purpose
Does the history of the bureaucratic system, along with the establishment of the Great Wall during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911), affect firm behavior across the borderlands of the Great Wall?
Design/methodology/approach
The Ming and Qing dynasties built a centralized administrative system in the borderlands on the south side of the Great Wall, in contrast to the “feudal lordship” system on the north side. Employing a regression discontinuity analysis framework with the Great Wall as a geographical discontinuity, we examine the long-run effects of the Great Wall on firms’ earnings management.
Findings
Using a large sample of nonlisted firms in the central core frontier region, we show that the earnings management of firms in the region south of the Great Wall is significantly curtailed compared with firms in the north of it, and this effect is more pronounced for non-SOEs. Our findings are robust to a battery of tests to account for alternative explanations.
Practical implications
Overall, by emphasizing the role of institutions, like legal system, shaped in history on firms’ earnings management, this study sheds new light on institutional determinants of firms’ behaviors in earnings information disclosure.
Originality/value
First, we enrich our understanding of the institutional determinants of firms’ financial reporting outcomes. Second, our findings shed new light on the long-term effects of historical ruling styles on modern corporate behavior.

Purpose
This paper proposes a framework for director evaluation in the context of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), taking into account the influences of traditional and modern Chinese ideologies.
Design/methodology/approach
Following the Delphi method, a series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with Chinese SOE directors.
Findings
The framework used has been validated by examining seven dimensions of virtue and four dimensions of competence functions in Chinese SOEs. Effective and representative characteristics of each dimension are identified through interviews.
Originality/value
First, through this research, indicators of virtue have been materialized and those of competence have been specified in a broader range. Second, this research provides advice for training of candidate directors whose experience were in private firms before they step in as SOE directors.

Purpose
This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency and mechanism of three kinds of expired nitroimidazole antibiotics as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1M HCl.
Design/methodology/approach
Evaluation was carried out by weight loss and electrochemical techniques. The surface morphology and the composition of the elements of adsorption layer are studied by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometer.
Findings
The experimental results reveal that the maximum value of inhibition efficiency appear at an extreme point of concentration with the increase of concentration of the inhibitors. Ornidazole has better corrosion inhibition than metronidazole but not as tinidazole. The inhibitors all act as cathodic type corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of ornidazole, metronidazole and tinidazole on mild steel obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm and belongs to chemisorption of electron donating. Combined with the molecular structure of the corrosion inhibitor and the experimental structure, the authors propose a detailed mechanism analysis.
Originality/value
The expired nitroimidazole antibiotics as corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution is first studied. It provides a way to deal with expired drugs, thereby reducing environmental pollution. The study explored the inhibition mechanism affecting by comparison different structure of three kinds of expired nitroimidazole antibiotics molecular, providing theoretical support for the preparation of the new inhibitor.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop an early fire-alarm raising system based on video processing, and combine it with the omnidirectional projecting system. It not only gives alarm immediately in early fire so that people can be able to strive for more time to escape from the spot, but also solves problem of discontinued screen which was presented fire scene.
Design/methodology/approach
The smoke detection system is made by image processing. The flowchart of smoke detection is improved, which the method of background updating can filter out the moving objects that only stay for a short time in the image; and avoids these objects being determined to be the background. Moreover, the authors extract the flickering area to separate the non-smoke and smoke from the candidate of smoke regions. Finally, the image processing is applied in omnidirectional projecting system, then presented the 360-degree fire scene.
Findings
The results show that the smoke detection system can accurately detect the smoke and mark its location, then combining it with the omnidirectional projecting system, although the resolution of omnidirectional projecting system is not enough, it can present a continued screen and location of smoke on the 360-degree cylindrical screen.
Originality/value
This paper develops the smoke detection based on a improved method of image processing, and the control center staff can see the 360-degree fire scene via omnidirectional projecting system, so shorten the time to find the source of smoke.
