Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect of flash fire exposure on the mechanical properties of single-layer thermal protective clothing.

Design/methodology/approach

The full-scale flame manikin tests were performed to simulate flash fire exposure. Two typical fire-resistant fabrics were investigated. The manikin was divided into seven body parts and the specimens meeting the requirements of tensile and tear strength standards were sampled. Fabric thickness, mass per unit area, tensile strength and tear strength were measured and analyzed.

Findings

The results revealed the significant influence of heat flux on both of tensile and tear strength. However, the regression analysis indicated the low R2 of the liner models. When the tensile and tear strength retention were reorganized based on the body parts, both of the multiple linear regression models for tensile and tear strength showed higher R2 than the one-variable linear regressions. Furthermore, the R2 of the multiple linear regression model for tear strength retention was remarkably higher than that of the tensile strength.

Practical implications

The findings suggested that greater attention should be paid to the local part of human body and more factors such as the air gap should be considered in the future thermal aging of firefighters’ clothing studies.

Originality/value

The outcomes provided useful information to evaluate the mechanical properties of thermal protective clothing and predict its service life.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationship of entrepreneurial orientation (EO), new product development (NPD), legitimacy (political and market) and firm performance (FP). The authors investigate how and when EO improves FP in high-tech small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

The paper formulates 5 hypotheses from literature review and theoretical deduction. The hypotheses are tested using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression with data collected from 219 randomly selected SMEs operating in high-tech industries of China.

Findings

The findings show that the mechanism of EO improve FP in high-tech SMEs by considering NPD as a mediator and legitimacy as moderators: (1) NPD plays a mediating role in the relationship between EO and FP, (2) market legitimacy (ML) positively moderating the effect of EO on FP and (3) both political legitimacy (PL) and ML positively moderating the effect of NPD on FP.

Research limitations/implications

For the limitations, the firms the authors’ surveyed are SMEs that are not listed companies, which cause some limitations. For the implications, the authors propose some recommendations based on the findings to help Chinese SMEs to enhance performance.

Originality/value

The existing research on EO–FP linkage remains elusive findings. The paper reconciled the inconsistency by providing a nuanced mechanism of how EO promotes FP in high-tech SMEs of Chinese transition economy. By explain the important role of NPD in high-tech SMEs, the findings shed light on the mediators between EO and FP and the moderators. By emphasize the different role of ML and PL in determining EO–FP and NPD–FP linkages, the findings illustrate the peculiarity of contingency factors in a transition economy.

Abstract

Purpose

Sand production is a challenging issue during hydrocarbon production in the oil and gas industry. This paper aims to investigate one sand production process, i.e. transient sand production, using a novel bonded particle lattice Boltzmann method. This mesoscopic technique provides a unique insight into complicated sand erosion process during oil exploitation.

Design/methodology/approach

The mesoscopic fluid-particle coupling is directly approached by the immersed moving boundary method in the framework of lattice Boltzmann method. Bonded particle method is used for resolving the deformation of solid. The onset of grain erosion of rocks, which are modelled by a bonded particle model, is realised by breaking the bonds simulating cementation when the tension or tangential force exceeds critical values.

Findings

It is proved that the complex fluid–solid interaction occurring at the pore/grain level can be well captured by the immersed moving boundary scheme in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method. It is found that when the drawdown happens at the wellbore cavity, the tensile failure area appears at the edge of the cavity. Then, the tensile failure area gradually propagates inward, and the solid particles at the tensile failure area become fluidised because of large drag forces. Subsequently, some eroded particles are washed out. This numerical investigation is demonstrated through comparison with the experimental results. In addition, through breaking the cementation, which is simulated by bond models, between bonded particles, the transient particle erosion process is successfully captured.

Originality/value

A novel bonded particle lattice Boltzmann method is used to investigate the sand production problem at the grain level. It is proved that the complex fluid–solid interaction occurring at the pore/grain level can be well captured by the immersed moving boundary scheme in the framework of the lattice Boltzmann method. Through breaking the cementation, which is simulated by bond models, between bonded particles, the transient particle erosion process is successfully captured.

Purpose

Under the influence of loading, manufacturing, installation and other factors, the axis of sleeve bearing and journal will not be aligned, which will have a great impact on running stability and life of bearing. The existence of oil groove can effectively improve the life of sleeve bearing and working efficiency. The lubrication performance of two and three grooves sleeve bearing considering journal misalignment is analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

To solve the difference of discontinuous position of oil film thickness, it is necessary to use the flow balance relationship in the finite control space, and oil film thickness equation of multi-groove sleeve bearing considering journal misalignment is gained.

Findings

The friction and bearing capacity of journal bearing with oil groove increase with the increase of journal inclination angle. At the same journal inclination angle, the bearing capacity of two-axial groove journal bearing is larger than that of three-axial groove journal bearing, but the friction of two-axial groove journal bearing shows the trend of the first bigger and then smaller than that of three-axial groove journal bearing.

Originality/value

The research has great significance to optimize bearing lubrication performance and increase bearing working life.

Abstract

Purpose

Understanding people’s intentions to be an internet entrepreneur is an important issue for educators, academics and practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a scale to measure internet entrepreneurial self-efficacy.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on an analysis of 356 responses, a scale of internet entrepreneurial self-efficacy is validated in accordance with established scale development procedures.

Findings

The internet entrepreneurial self-efficacy scale has 16 items under three factors (i.e. leadership, technology utilization and internet marketing and e-commerce). The scale demonstrated adequate convergent validity, discriminant validity and criterion-related validity. Nomological validity was established by the positive correlation between the scale and, respectively, internet entrepreneurship knowledge and entrepreneurial intention.

Originality/value

This study is a pioneering effort to develop and validate a scale to measure internet entrepreneurial self-efficacy. The results of this study are helpful to researchers in building internet entrepreneurship theories and to educators in assessing and promoting individuals’ internet entrepreneurial self-efficacy and behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

With the proliferation of virtual reality (VR) applications in electronic commerce, investigations on the effects of VR on consumer responses are important. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of online presentation modes (i.e. situational VR, pure VR and picture) on consumer responses for three product types (i.e. geometric, material and mechanical).

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a 3×3 between-subjects experiment to validate the research model and hypotheses.

Findings

The results revealed that both the situational VR mode and the pure VR mode had a greater impact on product knowledge and purchase intention than the picture mode. The situational VR mode yielded a higher level of product knowledge and purchase intention than the pure VR mode although it was not statistically significant. Furthermore, the pattern of VR modes superiority was found to be consistent across geometric, material and mechanical product types.

Originality/value

This research study contributes to the VR literature by investigating a new type of VR: situational VR, and offering a more comprehensive picture of consumer responses to online product presentations. The authors then drew the implications from the findings to suggest guidelines for practitioners to efficiently allocate resources and maximize the effectiveness of online presentation modes.

Abstract

Purpose

A research framework that explains adoption intention in students with regard to brain–computer interface (BCI) games in the learning context was proposed and empirically examined.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an approach integrating the decomposed theory of planned behavior, perceived playfulness, risk and the task–technology fit (TTF) concept was used to assess data collected using a post-experiment questionnaire from a student sample in Taiwan. The research model was tested using the partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique.

Findings

Attitude, subjective norms and TTF were shown to impact intention to play the BCI game significantly, while perceived behavioral control did not show a significant impact. The influence of superiors and peers was found to positively predict subjective norms. With the exception of perceived ease of use, all of the proposed antecedents were found to impact attitude toward BCI games. Technology facilitating conditions and BCI technology characteristics were shown to positively determine perceived behavior control and TTF, respectively. However, the other proposed factors did not significantly influence the latter two dependents.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the nascent literature on BCI games in the context of learning by highlighting the influence of belief-related psychological factors on user acceptance of BCI games. Moreover, this study highlights the important, respective influences of perceived playfulness, risk and TTF on users' perceptions of a game, body monitoring and technology implementation, each of which is known to influence willingness to play.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the controller design of flexible manipulator. Flexible manipulator system is a nonlinear, strong coupling, time-varying system, which is introduced elastodynamics in the study and complicated to control. However, due to the flexible manipulator, system has a significant advantage in response speed, control accuracy and load weight ratio to attract a lot of researchers.

Design/methodology/approach

Since the order of flexible manipulator system is high, designing controller process will be complex, and have a large amount of calculation, but this paper will use the dynamic surface control method to solve this problem.

Findings

Dynamic surface control method as a controller design method which can effectively solve the problem with the system contains nonlinear and reduced design complexity.

Originality/value

The authors assume that the dynamic parameters of flexible manipulator system are unknown, and use Radial Basis Function neural network to approach the unknown system, combined with the dynamic surface control method to design the controller.

Purpose

Near-net-shaped processes of jet engine blade have better performance in both reducing the material waste during production and improving work reliability in service, while the geometric features of blade, both sculptured surface and thin-walled shape, make the precise machining of blade challenging and difficult owing to its dynamics behaviors under complex clamping and machining loads. This paper aims to present a fundamental approach on modeling and performance analysis of the blade–fixture system.

Design/methodology/approach

A computerized framework on the complex blade–fixture dynamic behavior has been developed. Theoretical mechanic analysis on blade fixturing and machining is proposed with an especial emphasis on the boundary conditions of the blade–fixture system. Then the finite element analysis (FEA) method is used to simulate the variation trend of preloads, stiffness and blade distortion. The strong influence of parameters of workpiece–fixture configuration on blade distortion and machining error is investigated.

Findings

With a case of real jet engine blade machining, the experimental results and theoretical predictions suggest good agreement on their variation tendency. The loaded pressure of clamps has a critical influence on the total stiff performance of the blade–fixture system, and the profile error of the blade contributes much to the inconsistency in geometric dimension and surface integrity of blades’ machining. In the end, the results also validate the effectiveness of this methodology to predict and improve the performance of the blade–fixture configuration design.

Originality/value

The adaptive machining of near-net-shaped jet engine blade is a new high-performance manufacturing technology in aerospace production. This study provides a fundamental methodology for the performance analysis of blade-fixture system, to clear the variation law of blade distortion during preloading and machining, which will contribute to minimize the machining error and improve productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to examine the relationships among personality traits (i.e. the Big Five personality traits and locus of control), self-perceived facial attractiveness, motivations (i.e. intrinsic and extrinsic motivation) and intention toward live stream broadcasting. It also investigates the moderating role of perceived behavioral control in the relationship between motivations and intention.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collected from a sample of 637 participants are used to examine the research model and test the hypotheses with the employment of partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The study shows that motivations and perceived behavioral control are significant predictors of intention. Perceived behavioral control has a significant moderating effect between motivations and intention. Intrinsic motivation is positively influenced by self-perceived facial attractiveness, agreeableness, extraversion and internal locus of control, while extrinsic motivation is positively predicted by self-perceived facial attractiveness, conscientiousness and extraversion.

Originality/value

This study enhances our understanding of the determinants of intention toward live stream broadcasting by exploring its relationships with motivations, self-perceived facial attractiveness and personality, as well as the moderating effects of perceived behavioral control.
