Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a relatively simple and rapid method to create a digital human model (DHM) to serve clothing industry.
Design/methodology/approach
Human body’s point cloud is divided into hands, foots, head and torso. Then forward modeling method is used to model hands and foots, photo modeling method is used to model head and reverse modeling method is used to model torso. After that, hands, foots, head and torso are integrated together to get a static avatar. Next, virtual skeleton is bound to the avatar. Finally, a lifelike digital human body model is created by the mixed modeling method (MMM).
Findings
In allusion to the defect of the three-dimension original data of human body, this paper presented an MMM, with which we can get a realistic digital human body model with accurate body dimensions. The DHM can well meet the needs of fashion industry.
Practical implications
The DHM, which is got by the MMM, can be well applied in the field of virtual try on, virtual fashion design, virtual fashion show and so on.
Originality/value
The originality of the paper lies in the integration of forward modeling, reverse modeling and photo modeling to present a novel method of human body modeling.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on cost of quality (CoQ) research, this study aims to highlight the importance of incorporating the costs to customers in contributing to service quality when examining how customers respond to possible service failures [quality assurance behavior (QAB)]. Consequently, this study also aims to show how the CoQ framework can be a useful tool to the service industry in determining enhancements in quality and related expenditures.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the airline industry as a case example, this study empirically tests the impact of predicted service quality and its associated costs on an individual’s QAB (wait time spent at the departing airport) through revealed preferences. The study uses survey data from more than 4,000 passengers matched with travel-specific quality information archived by the US Department of Transportation (DOT).
Findings
This study finds that customers are willing to increase their level of QAB when informed of an increased probability of service failure. This study also finds that the level of QAB varies depending on anticipated customer costs of avoiding or responding to service failures.
Practical implications
Findings of this study emphasize the need for shared responsibility between service providers and their customers in making decisions on the provision of service quality, as helping customers adjust the appropriate level of QAB may result in greater efficiency and higher quality of service.
Originality/value
This study conceptualizes and empirically tests causal relationships between expected quality and customer efforts (QAB), thus contributing to operations literature examining CoQ in a service setting. This study argues that it is critical to consider shared responsibilities between co-producers (service providers and customers) in service operations studies.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a new collaborative design-based method for designing customized garments, aimed at the physically disabled people with scoliosis.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed method is based on the virtual human model created using a 3D body scanner, permitting to simulate the consumer’s morphological shape with atypical physical deformations. Next, customized 2D and 3D virtual garment prototyping tools will be used to create products through interactions between the consumer, designer and pattern maker. The general principle of the proposed design method is based on the following sequence: design-display-evaluation-adjustment. After running the sequence for a number of times, the final design solution, which will be approved by both the designer and consumer, can be easily identified.
Findings
Design knowledge, which is already applied to normal body shapes successfully can be applied to 3D garment design using the concept which is based on collaborative design. Through this process, the classical 2D garment design knowledge, especially 2D patterns and design rules, can be modified and applied according to a normalized virtual garment sensory evaluation procedure quantitatively. This evaluation procedure, interactively performed by the designer and consumer, can permit to adapt the finished product to disabled people afflicted with severe scoliosis. The proposed method is also validated to be more advanced compared to 2D-to-3D virtual CAD design method, especially for atypical morphologies.
Originality/value
As a co-design method, 3D virtual draping and sensory evaluation can fully satisfy the interaction between the garment design technical space and perceptual space of the finished garments ensuring desired 3D garment fit effect by adjustment of technical parameters. 3D scanning technology is used to generate a complete digitalized 3D human model, permitting to extract the main features of body shapes without accurate measurements. As a knowledge-based design process, both the fashion design knowledge and the pattern making knowledge will be extracted to provide inspirations and references. Successful design solutions will be incorporated into the fashion design knowledge base in order to generate new design rules and enhance professional design knowledge.

The purpose of this paper is to set up a women’s jeans knowledge base between consumer profile and jeans profile. The result of study could be applied to jeans recommendation system for a special consumer.
Design/methodology/approach
Women’s jeans are chosen as research objects. The sensory evaluation technology and intelligent data fusion methods are applied in this research.
Findings
Eight pairs of words were selected to set up normalized sensory evaluation criteria in the study for describing both consumers’ expectations and products. The relation between consumer profile and jeans profile could be quantified according to the principle of sensory evaluation technology.
Practical implications
Four experiments are designed for setting up this knowledge base by sensory evaluation technology, and set up the women’s jeans knowledge base by intelligent data fusion methods.
Originality/value
The theory of sensory evaluation technology is applied for building women’s jeans knowledge base that can be used for consumer-oriented intelligent garment recommendation system.

Purpose
Organizations can benefit significantly from the growing capabilities of the internet. As the Web facilitates purchasing and reduces the costs of marketing, companies can connect with customers through the use of storytelling. This study aims to examine how small businesses leverage the use of storytelling to engage with customers and drive revenue and online reputation management.
Design/methodology/approach
Both qualitative and quantitative insights are offered in two studies. In Study 1, interviews were conducted with business owners to explore the efforts made by their companies to connect and engage with consumers online. Study 2 builds on the findings from Study 1 and uses survey methodology to test a model which outlines how storytelling can foster engagement with customers.
Findings
Results indicate that story content is positively related to emotional content and the personal connection an individual feels toward a firm’s products. Furthermore, user-generated content moderates the relationship between story content creation and personal connections. Findings also demonstrate that personal connection is essential to customer engagement. Ultimately, engagement can lead to revenue generation from social commerce as well as increased reputation management activity.
Originality/value
This research demonstrates how small businesses can use the power of storytelling to immerse and transport audiences in such a way that customer beliefs and attitudes toward the firm are impacted in a favorable way. By telling its brand story well, firms have the power to increase the value of their products.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the psychological influence that the presence of music has on consumers’ evaluations of the service environment. Specifically, it investigates how emotion regulation processes and the impact of emotions/mood are linked to consumers’ evaluation of service and product quality.
Design/methodology/approach
An exploratory study was conducted using industry professionals in order to garner insight about the value of music and its benefits in the service environment. A field experiment was then conducted to test hypotheses.
Findings
Industry professionals offer implicit theories about the value of music. Specifically, they propose that music can be used to help customers regulate emotions and improve mood, enhance the customer experience and help in attracting new consumer segments. Results from the field experiment found that those exposed to music were likely to improve mood, express more favorable evaluations of the service and product quality of the establishment, as well as exhibit stronger intentions to continue to patronize the establishment.
Practical implications
Using live music in the service environment can be beneficial to organizations by improving customers’ emotional/psychological status as well as their evaluation of the consumption experience.
Originality/value
This research contributes to the existing literature by demonstrating how emotion regulation processes and the impact of emotions/mood are linked to consumers’ evaluation of service and product quality. Also, support for mood congruency judgment is found. Participants in the field study who had been exposed to music indicated that they made efforts to improve their mood and subsequently had more favorable judgments of service and product quality.

Abstract
Purpose
Korea’s Institute for Basic Science (IBS), the first research institute dedicated to basic science in Korea, started ten years ago as part of a science policy called the Science Belt. It is noteworthy that Korea, with a short history of basic science, established such a research institute exclusively for basic science within a short period of time and made it one of the representative institutions of basic science in Korea. This paper aims to uncover the impetuses and constraints surrounding the policy of Science Belt, centering on the IBS.
Design/methodology/approach
Kingdon’s stream theory is used to clarify the factors that acted as impetuses or constraints for the Science Belt. For the analysis, in-depth interviews with the active policy participants were conducted in addition to the thorough literature review. The interviews enabled an in-depth understanding of the underlying factors for the Science Belt and the actual procedures of the policy decision.
Findings
This study found that the most powerful impetus in the Science Belt policymaking process was the President and a small group composed of a few scientists who played a leading role in the political stream. The constraint of the Science Belt was that the participation of scientist experts and governmental officials, the so-called invisible participants of Kingdon, was insignificant. In particular, there was no system in place to select policy alternatives for basic science through discussion between scientists and governmental officials.
Research limitations/implications
The temporal scope of this study was limited to policy formation, that is, until the establishment of IBS. Therefore, future studies shall conduct a research on the implementation of the actual policy, IBS’s achievements and IBS’s impact of Korea’s basic science community.
Originality/value
This study applied both a theoretical framework and in-depth interviews along with the literature overview to understand a policymaking process from various angles.

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the machine design and control strategy of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) system, especially utilized in variable speed applications, in order to stabilize the output voltage on the dc link over a wide speed range.
Design/methodology/approach
Different ac/dc power converter topologies are comparatively studied, each with an accordingly designed PMSG, so as to investigate the influence of the armature winding inductance as well as the relationship between the PMSG and power converter topologies.
Findings
Pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifier is preferable for the said application due to its good performance and controllability. Moreover, by employing the PWM rectifier, relatively large inductance of the PMSG is considered for both short-circuit current reduction and field regulation.
Originality/value
Field-regulating control is realized with a space vector PWM (SVPWM) rectifier, which can weaken the PMSG magnetic field during high-speed operation, while even properly enhance the field at low speed, ensuring a small change of the PMSG output voltage and a stable dc voltage.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study a woodworking machine, in which a linear induction motor (LIM) is applied to feed the wood to be processed into the cutting saw. The LIM is optimally designed and the whole drive system is controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) to meet the industrial demands.
Design/methodology/approach
Since the operation range is short, the LIM mainly works at the transient state of quick start and quick brake. Hence, the thrust force with a large slip ratio (hereafter called the starting thrust) is one of the most important issues in the LIM design. Finite element method is used to optimize the starting thrust while taking a specific variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) drive into account.
Findings
The LIM system directly drives the machine workbench where the wood is placed, eliminating the requirement of manpower to push the wood through the cutting saw, hence, greatly reduces the operation hazard. It has a higher reliability and longer service life than the conventional drive system employing a rotary motor with a ball screw mechanism.
Originality/value
The LIM is an attractive candidate for the woodworking machine application, which can replace the complicated and relatively low-efficiency mechanism of rotary motor and ball screw. High starting thrust can be achieved by optimizing the LIM design, whilst the specific VVVF control is essential to ensure a good drive performance. The PLC is competent for both human-machine interface (HMI) and control of the inverter-fed LIM system, and is of high reliability in industrial environment.
