Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this case study was to gather participants' perceptions of the impact of Memorial Healthcare System's Pillars of Leadership Academy's leadership development programs on an individual, professional and organizational level.
Design/methodology/approach
Through a mixture of in‐person and telephone structured interviews, the researchers collected and analyzed qualitative data to explore the experiences of participants from the leadership development programs.
Findings
The major themes that interviewees mentioned as impacts of their participation in the mentoring programs closely parallel the foundations of transformational leadership. This suggests that the goals of the Pillars of Leadership Academy have been successful in developing leaders, which provides the basis for improved organizational as well as individual performance.
Practical implications
Developing leaders has been identified as one of the most pressing challenges for the future. Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) demonstrates that theory‐ and competency‐based leadership development programs can contribute to the performance and success of individuals as well as health services organizations.
Originality/value
The success of MHS overall and the contributions of the Pillars of Leadership Academy to the organizational culture and leadership provides a best practice that other organizations can follow regarding the implementation of a success leadership development program.

Purpose
This article has two purposes. The first is to synthesize the important current concepts, definitions, and styles of resolving and/or managing workplace conflicts. The second is to introduce a systematic approach to resolving workplace conflicts.
Design/methodology/approach
Historical approaches to conflict management are briefly reviewed and Goldratt's evaporating cloud is introduced as a structured approach to achieving win‐win solutions to workplace conflicts. A comprehensive case is used to demonstrate the application of the suggested approach.
Findings
Goldratt's evaporating cloud provides a systematic approach to identifying the conflicting needs or interests of the parties to a conflict, and a process for making explicit the assumptions underlying the conflict and challenging their validity, leading to win‐win solutions to workplace conflicts. The evaporating cloud incorporates well‐accepted principles of achieving win‐win solutions and complements existing approaches.
Research limitations/implications
Although there is a growing community of users of the evaporating cloud, it is still a relatively new approach. Although anecdotal examples of applications of the cloud have been published in trade journals, web sites and conference proceedings, additional empirical research should be done to evaluate the usefulness of the cloud in resolving workplace conflicts once a critical mass of users exists.
Practical implications
The evaporating cloud is a practical and intuitive tool that can be used by employees at all levels of an organization to understand and resolve conflicts.
Originality/value
The paper identifies the shortcomings of existing conflict management approaches and shows how the evaporating cloud complements existing approaches. In addition, the applicability of the cloud to a wide range of workplace conflicts, from intra‐personal to inter‐organizational, is demonstrated.

Abstract
Purpose
Many refugees and asylum seekers in Germany experience a high disease burden and low health literacy. The current study aims to focus on assessing these issues among African refugees and asylum seekers in Bavaria, Germany. The authors evaluated their self-perceived health status and health literacy, and identified barriers and gaps in health care utilization, intending to improve health care services for this group.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conducted a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based study involving 69 refugees and asylum seekers from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Nigeria. The authors performed descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses.
Findings
The authors found a substantial disease burden in the early stages of resettlement in Germany, particularly mental health symptoms (53.6%) and musculoskeletal problems (47.8%). Challenges in health literacy were observed, such as difficulties in understanding health information and managing emergency situations. Access to interpreters was limited, and understanding treatment certificates was more challenging than using electronic health cards, with 18.2% of participants reporting denial of medical treatment.
Practical implications
These findings highlight the need for early and tailored health support for refugees, with a particular focus on mental health. Efforts should be made to reduce language barriers and improve navigational skills within the health-care system, particularly in emergency situations. Addressing the restricted access to health care and bureaucratic obstacles is crucial for improved health outcomes among refugees.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is the first to specifically explore the self-reported health status and health literacy of African refugees and asylum seekers in Bavaria, Germany, providing valuable insights into the unique healthcare challenges of this often underrepresented and overlooked population.

The purpose of this paper is to propose hybrid revised weighted fuzzy c-means (RWFCM) clustering and Nelder–Mead (NM) simplex algorithm, called as RWFCM-NM, for generalized multisource Weber problem (MWP).
Design/methodology/approach
Although the RWFCM claims that there is no obligation to sequentially use different methods together, NM’s local search advantage is investigated and performance of the proposed hybrid algorithm for generalized MWP is tested on well-known research data sets.
Findings
Test results state the outstanding performance of new hybrid RWFCM and NM simplex algorithm in terms of cost minimization and CPU times.
Originality/value
Proposed approach achieves better results in continuous facility location problems.

This paper brings examples and case studies of how the concepts of conversing cities has been and is being integrated into existing cities focusing on the future – youth, employment, education and quality of live as essential factors for the future prosperity of cities.
Findings
With the rapid changes in society, economy and technology, not only business organizations need to adapt to the new reality but also cities. Conversing is an important part of adaptation – communicating, making contact, networking, sharing ideas, creating new knowledge.

This article shows how interactions which have been formulated for organizations (businesses) can be relevant and essential to cities as living and changing units and shows how conversing cities have benefited and prospered.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to help explain how certain smaller university endowments are able to provide investment results that are more typical of much larger endowments. Investment teams' characteristics and risk-reward perceptions are examined in relation to portfolio composition and performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This exploratory study uses a grounded-theory approach consisting of 20 in-depth interviews of financial officers at US colleges and universities with assets between $100 million and $200 million. Ten were conducted from the top performance quartile and ten from the bottom quartile. Interviews were transcribed and coded; afterward, emerging themes and constructs were identified. Objective investment performance over a ten-year period was employed from a well-known industry survey.
Findings
Top-performing endowments were described as having endowment teams with greater investment expertise, efficacy, decision-making independence and learning commitment than teams from the low-performing endowments. Teams from top-performing endowments assessed alternative investments more favorably and made greater portfolio allocations to them as compared to teams from low-performing endowments.
Research limitations/implications
Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may not be generalizable.
Practical implications
The paper includes implications for colleges and universities in the management of their endowments, and particularly in the selection of committee and other team members.
Originality/value
The paper is original in exploring certain team characteristics and practices of institutional investment decision-makers and their relationship to portfolio composition and performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to address a novel information sharing phenomenon among many hospitality consumers, that is, sharing information during, rather than weeks after, a hospitality consumption experience. Specifically, this study tests if including a temporal contiguity cue in a review can significantly enhance the purchase intention of other consumers toward the reviewed business.
Design/methodology/approach
A 2 (personal sense of power) × 2 (temporal contiguity cue: manipulated to be absent vs present) quasi-experiment was conducted in this research. Floodlight analysis with the Johnson–Neyman technique was used to test the interaction effect. Hayes’ PROCESS procedure was used to test the mediation effects.
Findings
The study found that, for powerless consumers, temporal contiguity cue can effectively enhance the perceived trustworthiness of the review and purchase intention toward the reviewed business. Conversely, for powerful consumers, temporal contiguity cue can significantly reduce the perceived trustworthiness of the review and purchase intention toward the business. Mediation test further revealed evidence for the underlying psychological mechanism for these effects.
Originality/value
Revealing the mixed effects of a novel factor, temporal contiguity cue, on consumer responses toward online hospitality reviews, the current research contributes to the expanding stream of theoretical and managerial knowledge on online review management in social media platforms.
