Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present combination of poly-jet technology and ink-jet technology in a multidisciplinary way in order to exploit advantages of these rapid prototyping techniques in manufacturing a demonstrator device – a variable interdigital capacitor.

Design/methodology/approach

The platform of 3D complex geometry, with optimized design and cavity under the capacitor's fingers (plates), was fabricated using Alaris 3D printer, whereas silver conductive segments were fabricated using Dimatix ink-jet printer and thanks to the mechanical flexibility the platform has been covered using these segments.

Findings

When one side of the capacitor's structure changes angular position (in the range from 0 to 90°) with reference to the fixed part, the variation in total capacitance is obtained. The total capacitance decreases (in the range from 20.2 to 1.5 pF) with decrease in effective overlapping area for the variation of angular position from 0 to 90° The maximum measured tuning ratio for the proposed design of the variable capacitor was 13.5:1.

Research limitations/implications

Presented variable capacitor can be used for detection angular position in the range from 0 to 90°.

Practical implications

The new horizon has been opened combining the rapid prototyping equipment in electronics and mechanical engineering in an interdisciplinary way to manufacture, for the first time, variable capacitor using poly-jet and ink-jet technologies. These techniques do not require higher mask counts which makes the fabrication fast and cost-effective.

Originality/value

This work, for the first time, demonstrates the combination of ALARIS 30 3D printer and Dimatix DMP-3000 materials deposition printer in order to fabricate the interdigital capacitor with complex 3D geometry. ALARIS 3D printer has been used for manufacturing plastic platform (with the possibility to precisely adjust angular position of one comb related to another) and Dimatix printer has been used to print silver conductive inks on flexible substrates (Kapton film), and this mechanically flexible structure was used to cover capacitor's fingers on the platform (assembly).

Abstract

Purpose

The NBA Draft policy pursues the goal to provide the weakest teams with the most talented young players to close the gap to the superior competition. But it hinges on appropriate talent evaluation skills of the respective organizations. Research suggests the policy might be valid but to date unable to produce its intended results due to the “human judgement-factor”. This paper investigates specific managerial selection-behavior-influencing information to examine why decision-makers seem to fail to constantly seize the opportunities the draft presents them with.

Design/methodology/approach

Athleticism data produced within the NBA Draft Combine setting is strongly considered in the player evaluations and consequently informs the draft decisions of NBA managers. Curiously, research has failed to find much predictive power within the players pre-draft combine results for their post-draft performance. This paper investigates this clear disconnect, by examining the pre- and post-draft data from 2000 to 2019 using principal component and regression analysis.

Findings

Evidence for an athletic-induced decision-quality-lowering bias within the NBA Draft process was found. The analysis proves that players with better NBA Draft Combine results tend to get drafted earlier. Controlling for position, age and pre-draft performance there seems to be no proper justification based on post-draft performance for this managerial behavior. This produces systematic errors within the structure of the NBA Draft process and leads to problematic outcomes for the entire league-policy.

Originality/value

The paper delivers first evidence for an athleticism-induced decision-making bias regarding the NBA Draft process. Informing future selection-behavior of managers this research could improve NBA Draft decision-making quality.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a reliable statistical model for time-series prices of short-stay accommodation and overnight stays in a eurozone country.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploiting the unit root feature, the cointegrated vector autoregressive model solves the problem of misspecification. Subsequently, variables are modelled for a long-run equilibrium with included deterministic variables.

Findings

The empirical results confirmed that overnight stays for foreign tourists were positively associated with the prices of short-stay accommodation.

Research limitations/implications

The major limitation lies in the data vector and its time horizon; its extension could provide a more specific view.

Practical implications

Findings can assist practitioners and hotel executives by providing the information and rationale for adopting seasonal volatility pricing. Structural breaks in price time-series have practical implications for setting seasonal-pricing schemes. Tourists could benefit either from greater price stability or from differentiated seasonal prices, which are important in the promotion of the price attractiveness of the tourist destination.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper lies in the applied unit root econometrics for tourism price time-series modelling and the prediction of short-stay accommodation prices.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a systematic review of the literature on destination competitiveness. It explores research themes and approaches, and outlines an agenda for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

One hundred and eighty-three journal articles on destination competitiveness published in English since 2010 were collected. Content analysis was performed.

Findings

The authors found that sustainable development and smart tourism were popular themes related to destination competitiveness. Recent studies still relied heavily on Ritchie and Crouch’s (2000) model or Dwyer and Kim’s (2003) model. The authors also offer constructive insights for future research, proposing that research seek more input from residents, take an advanced integrated approach between supply and demand, adopt more core theories, focus on less researched types of destinations, explore the further contribution of smart tourism and adopt a negative lens to study the antecedents and consequences of destination competitiveness. The adoption of a longitudinal study approach is also suggested.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the literature because of the scope of its review and perspective of discussion. Previous review papers have only focused on the factors and indicators of tourism destination competitiveness in different settings. We extend our literature review to research themes and approaches, and make suggestions for future research directions.
