Abstract

Surveys the immediate background to, and establishment of, the European Commission supported European Public Information Centres (EPICs) operating in UK public libraries. Current structures for support and cooperation are outlined, and the author suggests that, although the network has been popular and successful, EPICs face challenges for the future, including external networking and internal cultural change.

Abstract

“Social”, in terms of EC policy, covers areas from “youth” to health and safety. This, and the many non‐EC organisations involved in this field, means that any comprehensive overview of published material on the social dimension to Europe would fill a whole issue of Aslib Proceedings!

Abstract

The use of pharmacological interventions in the treatment of forensic psychiatric patients constitutes an important part of the day‐to‐day practice of mental health professionals working in this important psychiatric sub‐speciality. It involves not just the prescription of specific drugs, but also the regular monitoring of their effects and possible side effects. Such monitoring involves the collaboration of professionals working in very different fields such as medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and pharmacy.

Abstract

Explores how Sedgwick UK, part of the Sedgwick Group, gained its ISO 9001 certification. Looks at, first, why the company sought certification, the answer being competitive advantage and formal recognition as a quality company. Explains that ISO 9001 was a logical progression of its previous client servicing standards and procedures. Goes on to explain how it made sense of the standard as it applies to the company and describes how the system was finally implemented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to review UK government policy on public libraries since 2003, and to examine its relationship to other forms of demand for public libraries

Design/methodology/approach

The published literature from government and professional bodies is reviewed, alongside published statistics on library use.

Findings

Since 2003 public libraries have been the subject of sustained interest from UK government, in the form of a range of policy initiatives and incorporation in the Best Value and more recent Common Area Assessment monitoring frameworks. Alongside this, professional bodies and other commentators have put forward views on the role of libraries, but even taken together it is not clear that these represent the needs or aspirations of library service users.

Originality/value

This paper provides an overview of the demand for UK public libraries, and its synthesis will be of value to librarians, government departments and professionals in this and related fields.
