Abstract

Supply chain management as a system of operation continues to evolve. This study employs confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis to examine empirically the relationships among supplier selection criteria (quality, delivery reliability, product performance and unit price), supplier involvement on design teams and in continuous improvement programs, four dimensions of customer satisfaction (competitive pricing, product quality, product variety, and delivery service), and overall firm performance.

Abstract

The supply chain management way of thinking has an important human dimension due to its emphasis on communication and cooperation across all parties comprising the chain. Examination of the basics of supply chain management in parallel with some major trends occurring throughout the training discipline indicate that trainers have the means to assist in the development of individuals capable of functioning well in this environment. An explanation of what constitutes supply chain management and the corresponding tools, methods and approaches available to the training professional is presented.

Abstract

The goal of this exploratory study is to establish an explanatory model and corresponding instrument to help further understand, and conduct research in the area of supply chain management (SCM). Constructs pertaining to SCM assimilation, SCM outcomes, and overall firm performance are operationally defined in terms of their dimensions and items. The business literature is utilized to help define the constructs and to generate potential measurement items. The scales are then purified and a preliminary test for predictive validity is performed.

Abstract

Supply chain management is becoming critical as firms recognize that competition is shifting from company versus company to supply chain versus supply chain. Two important factors in building successful supplier relations are (1) defining criteria to select and evaluate suppliers and (2) involving suppliers in important, inter‐company decisions. This research describes the relationships between these factors and supplier performance and between supplier performance and manufacturing performance. It develops and administers a large‐sample survey and uses factor analysis to develop measures for the importance of supplier‐selection criteria, supplier involvement, supplier performance, and manufacturing performance. The results indicate that importance of supplier‐selection criteria and the use of supplier involvement have direct and significant impacts on supplier performance and that supplier performance has a direct and significant impact on manufacturing performance.

Abstract

Despite its central importance in nearly all societies, religion has been largely neglected in the study of organizations and management. In this introduction to the volume on religion and organization theory, we argue that such neglect limits unnecessarily the relevance and scope of organization and management theory (OMT) and that there is therefore great value in connecting organizational research with a deeper appreciation and concern for religion. We begin by speculating about some of the reasons why organization and management theorists are hesitant to study religion, and go on to discuss some nascent points of contact between religion and OMT. We conclude with a discussion of the articles in this volume, which represent an attempt to remedy this unfortunate blind spot within OMT scholarship.

Abstract

Logistics is considered to have a significant impact on a manufacturing organization's performance. This research utilizes a pilot study, a large‐scale survey of manufacturing managers, and linear structural relations (LISREL). The research methods develop measures and test relationships among six constructs: physical supply, physical distribution, logistics spanning processes, customer service, manufacturing flexibility, and firm performance. The results from the research confirm that logistics influences a manufacturer's ability to satisfy customers and overall performance. The level of manufacturing flexibility in the firm, as indicated by the presence of advanced process technology and the participation of manufacturing management in strategy formulation, alters logistics role in organizational success.

Abstract

The majority of the companies surveyed are outsourcing some transportation functions. The most frequently outsourced transportation functions are freight bill auditing, freight payment and transportation reports, which are basically clerical/repetitive in nature. Also, frequently outsourced are international shipping and fleet maintenance, functions that require considerable technical expertise and assets. Transportation functions of a strategic nature are usually not outsourced. The primary reasons for outsourcing are labour cost savings, specialisation, asset reduction, and expanding workload. Generally, the firms that outsourced transportation are satisfied with the service. Loss of management control is the most important reason for not outsourcing, although loss of control was not identified as a major problem area for firms who do outsource. The providers of transportation outsourcing services are relatively small corporations.

Abstract

Transportation is considered an important element of logistics and supply chain success. Yet it is often ignored as a source of competitive advantage. In this study, structural equation modeling is used to examine the impact of inbound and outbound transportation performance in terms of meeting delivery schedules and providing a timely reply to inquiries on the firm's ability to achieve product variety, product quality, manufacturing cost reduction, satisfactory delivery service, and acceptable overall performance.

Abstract

Just‐In‐Time (JIT) manufacturing remains an important issue and research efforts are beginning to examine its impact on other business functions. This paper proposes a theoretical model that relates the extent of JIT implementation to changes in inbound logistics practices and outcomes. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to responses from a large‐scale survey. Six underlying constructs were identified and retained, and eleven hypotheses concerning the causal relationships between these constructs were tested using LISREL. Analysis indicates that JIT: (1) improves supplier operations, (2) enhances transportation operations with respect to inbound carriers, (3) reduces the level and improves the management of inventories, (4) does not cause overall inbound logistics costs to increase, and (5) increases the quality and performance of inbound logistics.

Abstract

In this chapter, the authors explore the state of our field in terms of ways to present qualitative findings. The authors analyze all articles based on qualitative research methods published in the Academy of Management Journal from 2010 to 2017 and supplement this by informally surveying colleagues about their “favorite” qualitative authors. As a result, the authors identify five ways of presenting qualitative findings in research articles. The authors suggest that each approach has advantages as well as limitations, and that the type of data and theorizing is an important consideration in determining the most appropriate approach for the presentation of findings. The authors hope that by identifying these approaches, they enrich the way authors, reviewers, and editors approach the presentation of qualitative findings.
