Abstract

Consumerism is not a dirty word. Nor is it just one more faction for retailers to contend with against the general background of the high street battlefield. This is one of the points made here by Michael Shanks of the National Consumer Council. His views first emerged in this form at the Food Manufacturers' Federation conference, held recently in London. In short, he demonstrates that the retailer and the consumer do not necessarily have conflicting interests. The retailer needs the consumer and vice‐versa, and both need the benefits of a competitive, fairly free market if they are to achieve the best results for themselves. But first, Michael Shanks has some topical comments to make about the EEC and the Common Agricultural Policy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to re‐examine Milgram's obedience experiment and see how it can be used in management teaching and training. Milgram's discussion of authority, obedience and defence mechanisms are familiar to psychologists and sociologists, but less so to managers and people of responsibility in corporations, for whom it can help highlight ethical and psychological issues that undermine a sense of responsibility.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper revisits the experiment which shows how conscience can be manipulated by a fake ideal. The possibility of such external manipulation, it is then hypothesized, is favoured by an insufficiently human personal ideal, and by extension an inadequate corporate vision. The absence of an ideal may generate a whole series of “internal manipulations” which are frequently encountered in business life whenever a genuine sense of an ideal has been neutralized, allowing conformity to external pressures to take the upper hand. Examples are provided of such internal manipulations, taken from the world of business.

Findings

Two conditions are suggested for encouraging responsibility. First, a dynamic link with a meaningful personal and corporate ideal and second, a personal call to unmask various forms of self‐avoidance and confront psychological truth in the face of responsible decision. The paper underlines the inescapably personal and not merely social or contextual origin of deviant behaviour.

Originality/value

The paper offers openings for ethical training in responsibility in terms of inwardness (conscience, self‐questioning, virtues) and not simply in terms of incantations to conform to mission statements or charts.

Abstract

A building should enable its occupants to function more effectively and efficiently but frequently this is not the case. The reverse can occur to the extent where the building inhibits rather than enables its occupants. Three causal factors identified are: (1) pace of organisational change; (2) the design process; and (3) building management. Considering these together creates a different way of thinking about buildings and what they are for. Each factor is discussed individually as a potential source of constraint and solutions are proposed. Part I this month looks at cultural change and design. Part II next month will discuss management.

Abstract

Post‐James With a predictable fanfare of trumpets, North‐East London Polytechnic has come up with some thought‐provoking proposals on how the Diploma in Higher Education mooted by Lord James could operate. They are the work of a group formed last spring, including Mr Eric Robinson, Deputy Director (Planning) at North‐East London, and the ubiquitous Mr Tyrrell Burgess, who wears a hat at the Polytechnic in its Centre for Institutional Studies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the origins of strategic management accounting and to assess the extent of adoption and “success” of strategic management accounting (SMA).

Design/methodology/approach

Empirical papers which have directly researched SMA and prior review papers of the adoption and implementation of SMA or SMA techniques are reviewed. As well as assessing the extent of adoption of SMA and the reasons underlying an apparent low adoption rate, the role of accountants in adopting and implementing SMA is considered. Finally, the success or otherwise of SMA is discussed.

Findings

SMA or SMA techniques have not been adopted widely, nor is the term SMA widely understood or used. However, aspects of SMA have had an impact, influencing the thinking and language of business, and the way in which we undertake various business processes. These issues cut across the wider domain of management, and are not just the province of management accountants.

Research limitations/implications

There is limited value in conducting future surveys of the adoption and implementation of SMA or SMA techniques. Rather, the focus should be on how SMA‐inspired techniques and processes diffuse into general practice within organizations.

Originality/value

Twenty‐five years after the term strategic management accounting was first introduced in the literature, this paper brings together disparate literature and provides a broad assessment of the “state‐of‐the‐art” of strategic management accounting to inform researchers and practitioners.
