Abstract
Purpose
The phenomenon of mobile social networking site (SNS) addiction has become increasingly severe nowadays and brings adverse outcomes to users’ daily life and work efficiency. However, there are relatively few research probes into the formation process of mobile SNS addiction behavior, and how demographic factors (e.g. gender and age) influence users’ addiction behavior. Adopting the stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) framework, this study examines the effects of three types of technological functions (enjoyment, sociability and information value) on flow in relation to mobile SNS addiction. The authors further proposed gender and age as moderators, which play important roles in influencing the formation of mobile SNS addiction behavior.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examines the formation of mobile SNS addiction with a particular focus on the WeChat app. The authors use a field survey study conducted in China with 351 subjects of WeChat app users to examine thestudy model.
Findings
The results demonstrate that addictive behavior is determined by users’ flow states of using mobile SNS. The flow states, in turn, are influenced by three types of technological functions (enjoyment, sociability and information value). In addition, gender and age act as vital moderators in the model.
Originality/value
First, the authors empirically examine the formation of SNS addiction on the mobile device by adopting the S–O–R framework, which may enrich the addiction literature. Second, the authors reveal the moderating roles of age and gender in affecting the formation process of addiction behavior further. The findings of this research deepen our understanding of users’ addiction behavior. Third, the findings also offer rich insights to prevent mobile SNS addiction.

Purpose
This paper aims to present the mechanical design and kinematics of a novel rigid-flexible coupling hybrid robot to develop a promising aeroengine blades in situ repair technology.
Design/methodology/approach
According to requirements analysis, a novel rigid-flexible coupling hybrid robot is proposed by combining a three degrees of freedom (DOF) parallel mechanism with a flexible continuum section. Then the kinematics models of both parallel mechanism and flexible continuum section are derived respectively. Finally, based on equivalent joint method, a two-step numerical iterative inverse kinematics algorithm is proposed for the whole robot: (1) the flexible continuum section is equivalently transformed to a 2-DOF spherical joint, thus the approximate analytical inverse kinematic solution can be obtained; (2) the accurate solution is derived by an iterative derivation of both parallel mechanism and flexible continuum section.
Findings
To verify structure scheme and the proposed kinematics modeling method, numerical simulations and prototype experiments are implemented. The results show that the proposed kinematics algorithm has sufficient accuracy and computational efficiency in the whole available workspace, that is end-effector position error and orientation error are less than 0.2 mm and 0.01° respectively, and computation time is less than 0.22s.
Originality/value
A novel rigid-flexible coupling hybrid robot for aeroengine blades in situ repair is designed. A two-step numerical iterative inverse kinematics algorithm is proposed for this unique hybrid robots, which has good accuracy and computational efficiency.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to improve the film stiffness of a dry gas seal (DGS) through the proper design of 3D macroscopic surface structures based on numerical study.
Design/methodology/approach
A novel generalized three-dimensional (3D) geometric model is proposed to characterize macroscopic surface structures of a DGS, including grooves, waviness, radial taper and step. The mathematical model is established to simulate film pressure distribution. The effect of the surface profile and groove bottom profile on the steady-state performance of DGSs at different working conditions is investigated.
Findings
The unidirectional groove surface has the largest film stiffness at different speed conditions and the largest opening force at medium and high speed, whereas the annular groove has the largest opening force at static pressure. For obtaining the maximum film stiffness, unidirectional combined variable depth groove surface when ns = 0.4 and k = 0.5 outperforms the other unidirectional groove surfaces, whereas circumferential waviness when ns = 1 and k = 1 is the best choice among annular groove surfaces.
Originality/value
This study proposes a novel generalized 3D geometric model to characterize macroscopic surface structures of a DGS. The optimal groove bottom profile for different surface profiles of DGS is presented.

Abstract
Purpose
This study examines the impact of response time on user experience for mobile applications and considers the moderating influence of gender and network environment on this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
An experiment was conducted with 50 young adults to evaluate their user experience of a mobile application that simulates variations in network environment and response time. User experience was evaluated based on the three constituent dimensions of tolerance, acceptance, and satisfaction.
Findings
Analytical results demonstrate that response time not only adversely affects user experience of mobile applications, but that this effect is not homogeneous across the three dimensions of tolerance, acceptance and satisfaction. The findings also illustrate that gender moderates the effect of response time on user experience, however, the negative influence is more salient for males than females, which is opposite to our hypothesis. The joint moderating influence of gender and network environment turned out to be partly significant.
Practical implications
By illuminating users' tolerance, acceptance, and satisfaction with varied response times, findings from this study can inform the design of mobile applications such that desired levels of user experience can be assured with minimum resources.
Originality/value
Although response time has been hailed as a key determinant of user experience for desktop applications, there is a paucity of studies that have investigated the impact of response time on user experience for mobile applications. Furthermore, prior research on response time neglects the multi-dimensional nature of user experience. This study bridges the above mentioned knowledge gaps by delineating user experience into its constituent dimensions and clarifying the effects of response time on each of these dimensions.

Purpose
As an unhealthy dependence on social media platforms, social media addiction (SMA) has become increasingly commonplace in the digital era. The purpose of this paper is to provide a general overview of SMA research and develop a theoretical model that explains how different types of factors contribute to SMA.
Design/methodology/approach
Considering the nascent nature of this research area, this study conducted a systematic review to synthesize the burgeoning literature examining influencing factors of SMA. Based on a comprehensive literature search and screening process, 84 articles were included in the final sample.
Findings
Analyses showed that antecedents of SMA can be classified into three conceptual levels: individual, environmental and platform. The authors further proposed a theoretical framework to explain the underlying mechanisms behind the relationships amongst different types of variables.
Originality/value
The contributions of this review are two-fold. First, it used a systematic and rigorous approach to summarize the empirical landscape of SMA research, providing theoretical insights and future research directions in this area. Second, the findings could help social media service providers and health professionals propose relevant intervention strategies to mitigate SMA.

Abstract
Purpose
This study deals with the issue of how ethnic diversity on boards in a given firm may influence its performance in human resource management (HRM). Moreover, the study also tests the interaction between ethnic diversity and gender diversity and examines their joint effect on HRM.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on prior research, we predict that, with increasing demographic diversity in organizations today, ethnic diversity on boards should have a positive effect on HRM. Moreover, gender diversity, as a most visible dimension of demographic diversity, should have both a direct positive effect and an indirect moderating effect on the relationship between ethnic diversity and HRM. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses.
Findings
Our data analyses show empirical evidence supporting our predictions. First, our study shows that employer–employee relationship can be influenced by ethnic diversity on boards. Second, the foregoing analyses highlight the importance of considering the interaction between different dimensions of demographic diversity, such as that between ethnic and gender diversity. With a higher level of gender diversity on boards, the positive effect of ethnic diversity on HRM can become more salient.
Originality/value
This research tests the benefits of ethnic diversity on boards for improving firms’ performance in HRM, thus making a contribution by helping to understand the effects of ethnic diversity in a more comprehensive way. We also document the beneficial moderating effects of gender diversity on boards for the first time.

Abstract
Purpose
Human group behavior is the driving force behind many complex social and economic phenomena. Few studies have integrated multi-dimensional travel patterns and city interest points to construct urban security risk indicators. This paper combines traffic data and urban alarm data to analyze the safe travel characteristics of the urban population. The research results are helpful to explore the diversity of human group behavior, grasp the temporal and spatial laws and reveal regional security risks. It provides a reference for optimizing resource deployment and group intelligence analysis in emergency management.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the dynamics index of group behavior, this paper mines the data of large shared bikes and ride-hailing in a big city of China. We integrate the urban interest points and travel dynamic characteristics, construct the urban traffic safety index based on alarm behavior and further calculate the urban safety index.
Findings
This study found significant differences in the travel power index among ride-sharing users. There is a positive correlation between user shared bike trips and the power-law bimodal phenomenon in the logarithmic coordinate system. It is closely related to the urban public security index.
Originality/value
Based on group-shared dynamic index integrated alarm, we innovatively constructed an urban public safety index and analyzed the correlation of travel alarm behavior. The research results fully reveal the internal mechanism of the group behavior safety index and provide a valuable supplement for the police intelligence analysis.
