Abstract

Purpose

A large amount of post‐consumer carpet waste is discarded into landfills. The need to recycle this waste is increasing due to the lack of available landfill spaces in many parts of the world, environmental concerns, and resource conservation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the use of this waste for a low‐cost, high‐volume application.

Design/methodology/approach

Fibers from carpet waste have been successfully used as reinforcement in concrete, typically at 0.1‐1 per cent volume fraction (fractions by weight are even lower), for enhanced toughness. In this study, lightweight cementitious composites were fabricated that were reinforced with recycled carpet fibers at up to 20 per cent fiber to cement weight ratios. Flexural, toughness, and impact properties of the lightweight cementitious composites were characterized.

Findings

The density of the composites decreases with the increase of fiber content. In the three‐point bending test, lightweight cementitious composites exhibited a ductile behavior, and the flexural strength increases with the density of the composites. The energy absorption measured by the drop weight impact test was not very sensitive to the material parameters due to the total absorption of the impact energy by the specimens.

Originality/value

The density of the lightweight composites ranges from 0.7 to 1.0 g/cm3, which was about 30‐40 per cent of the density of typical concrete. Besides being moisture and termite resistant, the lightweight composites were very tough and could be cut and fastened with ordinary tools and nails. The lightweight composites are suitable for applications such as underlayment and wall panels for buildings, as well as for outdoor structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of ageing and the use of fabric softener during the life cycle of knitted fabrics.

Design/methodology/approach

The low‐stress mechanical properties were evaluated by means of the Kawabata evaluation system for fabric (KES‐F) and universal surface tester (UST) revealing that the tensile, shear, bending, compression and surface properties were altered by both ageing during the wash cycles and the use of fabric softener.

Findings

Machine laundering leaves fabrics with an uncomfortable hand due to the removal of finishes and the harsh mechanical action of laundering, and results in the change in mechanical properties of the fabrics.

Originality/value

The paper identifies the critical mechanical parameters which are influenced by ageing and the use of fabric softeners during life cycle of garments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate how proximity to metropolitan areas and local creative talent impact a company’s access to venture capital (VC). We analyze the interplay between these factors and test our hypotheses using USA county data.

Design/methodology/approach

This empirical study uses multivariate regression analyses to analyze VC investment distribution across the USA at the county level between the years 1990–2011.

Findings

Our findings suggest that an increase in the local creative workforce correlates with higher levels of VC funding, regardless of metro location, but has a more significant impact in metro areas, indicating the complementary nature of these factors. Furthermore, the tech industry benefits more from the local creative workforce and is less sensitive to geographic location. Our results suggest that non-metro locations with a rich local creative culture can be as effective in attracting VC as metro locations with a mediocre local creative culture. This study contributes to our understanding of the optimal geographic location for companies seeking VC.

Research limitations/implications

One of the limitations of our research is the research timeline. Since “creative class” was not measured by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) after 2011, we cannot analyze the recent effects of creative class on VC. However, given the fact that technology-related industries increasingly dominated the VC industry in recent years, our results on tech-related industries can shed light on the future expectations of the creative class in the VC industry moving forward.

Practical implications

Some companies might find it advantageous to locate outside metro areas where the creative workforce is more abundant and accessible. Our results support this trend by demonstrating that companies must consider the tradeoff between these two factors and recognize that locating in metro areas may not always be the optimal choice for every company. A tradeoff may exist between location and the cost of accessing creative talent.

Social implications

Our results suggest that non-metro locations with a rich local creative culture can be as effective in attracting VC as metro locations with a mediocre local creative culture.

Originality/value

The existing literature emphasizes the importance of studying various factors that can help distribute VC and entrepreneurial activities across the country instead of just being concentrated in specific areas like metro regions. Although previous studies have examined broader institutional and country-level factors, local creative culture has not been considered in the context of its impact on the geographical distribution of VC. Our research highlights creative culture as a new local factor that affects VC distribution among USA counties.

Abstract

Purpose

Today, e-government (electronic government) applications have extended to the frontiers of health-care delivery. E-Nabız contains personal health records of health services received, whether public or private. The use of the application by patients and physicians has provided efficiency and cost advantages. The success of e-Nabız depends on the level of technology acceptance of health-care service providers and recipients. While there is a large research literature on the technology acceptance of service recipients in health-care services, there is a limited number of studies on physicians providing services. This study aims to determine the level of influence of trust and privacy variables in addition to performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence and facilitating factors in the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model on the intention and behavior of using e-Nabız application.

Design/methodology/approach

The population of the study consisted of general practitioners and specialist physicians actively working in any health facility in Turkey. Data were collected cross-sectionally from 236 physicians on a voluntary basis through a questionnaire. The response rate of data collection was calculated as 47.20%. Data were collected cross-sectionally from 236 physicians through a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data.

Findings

The study found that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, trust and perceived privacy had a significant effect on physicians’ behavioral intentions to adopt the e-Nabız system. In addition, facilitating conditions and behavioral intention were determinants of usage behavior (p < 0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between social influence and behavioral intention (p > 0.05).

Originality/value

This study confirms that the UTAUT model provides an appropriate framework for predicting factors influencing physicians’ behaviors and intention to use e-Nabız. In addition, the empirical findings show that trust and perceived privacy, which are additionally considered in the model, are also influential.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop new four-dimensional (4D) hyperchaotic system by adding another state variable and linear controller to three-dimensional T chaotic dynamical systems. Its dynamical analyses, circuit experiment, control and synchronization applications are presented.

Design/methodology/approach

A new 4D hyperchaotic attractor is achieved through a simulation, circuit experiment and mathematical analysis by obtaining the Lyapunov exponent spectrum, equilibrium, bifurcation, Poincaré maps and power spectrum. Moreover, hardware experimental measurements are performed and obtained results well validate the numerical simulations. Also, the passive control method is presented to make the new 4D hyperchaotic system stable at the zero equilibrium and synchronize the two identical new 4D hyperchaotic system with different initial conditions.

Findings

The passive controllers can stabilize the new 4D chaotic system around equilibrium point and provide the synchronization of new 4D chaotic systems with different initial conditions. The findings from Matlab simulations, circuit design simulations in computer and physical circuit experiment are consistent with each other in terms of comparison.

Originality/value

The 4D hyperchaotic system is presented, and dynamical analysis and numerical simulation of the new hyperchaotic system were firstly carried out. The circuit of new 4D hyperchaotic system is realized, and control and synchronization applications are performed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study sought to provide an understanding of what a culturally contextualized model of instructional leadership looks like in Turkey, and how this differs from models disseminated in the USA.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employed qualitative meta-synthesis to systematically review the full set of 22 qualitative studies of instructional leadership in Turkey. A systematic synthesis strategy was applied to code the findings from each study to develop broad themes that describe key domains of principal instructional leadership practice.

Findings

The results showed that instructional leadership of school principals in Turkey is composed of four main dimensions and ten subdimensions. The main dimensions include: (1) emphasis on national goals and competition, (2) maintaining the learning environment, (3) motivating and enabling teachers, and (4) monitoring program alignment and test results.

Research limitations/implications

While broad dimensions of instructional leadership described in the international literature are relevant in Turkey, some practices used to enact those dimensions appear poorly aligned with the institutional–cultural context of Turkish schools. Thus, findings from this study support the assertion that the specific practices used to measure, assess and practice instructional leadership must be adapted to the context of a specific society.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to international efforts to develop a globally validated knowledge base in educational leadership and management.
