Abstract

This paper explores the concept of mentoring from a distance and uses a case study of a mentoring relationship to examine some of the issues. Using a new definition of mentoring by Wighton (1993) to explore the meaning of mentoring using telematics, the issues of how we communicate are discussed. The need to develop new ways of communicating is advocated, with reference made to the needs of small businesses. The differences, benefits and weaknesses are discussed, together with a realisation that in‐depth communication of feelings, personal and difficult problems are unlikely to be discussed without well tested face to face dialogue.

Abstract

Explores the moral issues which underpin the personnel function and considers the ethical challenges in policy making and the policy/practice gaps being thrown up by the radical global changes. Discusses the subject of axiology, together with deontology, to explore how these underpin company integrity and the rules of ethical custom. Emphasizes the need to raise the subject of ethics in the many areas associated with the employment of people. Recommends that this is an appropriate time with the change in emphasis from personnel to human resource management, and the need for proactive approaches to change. Concludes with a personal plea for HR specialists to be responsible for raising awareness, facilitating learning and ensuring that standards of ethical conduct are practised within human resource policies and practices.

Abstract

This paper challenges the common understanding of the word “career” in relation to the differences in male and female employment and seeks to show that women normally follow a career pattern which has characteristics of flexibility, change, transferable skills, part‐time and temporary working. Some career patterns and theories are challenged in the light of more recent understandings of psychological perspectives and these theories are tested against current thinking on employment needs in the 1990s. The paper concludes that typical female employment patterns are what is required in today’s economic climate and so women are more adaptable to the changes required. However, the down side of typical female careers is recognised as being an issue for discussion on employment values and rewards within society.

Abstract

Concentrates on the mentoring support for teachers in further education (FE) and higher education (HE), rather than the mentoring of students following qualification programmes. Raises issues of definition and argues the need for peer mentoring. Evaluates mentoring models and explores issues of role modelling, selection, styles, skills and qualities. Covers literature from the USA, Canada, Australia and Europe and spans the period 1793‐1996, starting with a British Library reference called “The Female Mentor” and including the recent upsurge in mentoring interest across business and the professions.

Abstract

Seeks to argue that recent developments in psychology have invalidated some theories of career development. Following a detailed explanation of the perspectives put forward by Bronfenbrenner and Plomin six frequently invoked career theories are considered. It is concluded that three are based on the now invalidated psychological assumptions and three are compatible with current psychology.
