Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is asking for a methodologically representable relation between different relative velocity approaches, counter surfaces and the tribological behavior of the radial shaft seal (RSS).
Design/methodology/approach
The tribological behavior between the seal and the counterpart is examined experimentally to submit significant measured values. The correlations among seal elements, relative velocity approaches and counter surfaces with more aspects are searched.
Findings
A basis for future research regarding optimization options for service life extension of the RSS under different operation environments has been set. New insights for the performance of 3D-printed counter surface are gained as well as the application possibility of that is searched.
Originality/value
The applied measuring procedure in investigation part especially the usage of different approaches in relative velocity approaches is designed with originality. In particularly, the usage of a 3D-printed counter surface comes for the first time in a scientific work.

Abstract
This chapter critically discusses the many positive aspects that are ascribed to gazelle firms by exploring the external effects and dark sides of high firm growth. On the background of the more general debate on purpose versus profit as a firm’s mission, the chapter theoretically elaborates on the dichotomy between quantitative and qualitative growth of gazelles. This is followed by a case-based illustration and exploration as to how quantitative and qualitative growth interrelates in gazelles and what are impediments for high growth that is purpose driven. The chapter closes with a discussion of the Janus-faced nature of gazelles and how their corporate citizenship can be enhanced.

Abstract
Purpose
Against statutory duties to introduce quality management systems, the increased importance of this subject has led to numerous activities in various public health institutions. Following the International Standardization Organization (ISO 9001:2000) prerequisites, Frankfurt Goethe University Hospital ENT clinic staff introduced a quality management system. This paper aims to investigate this process.
Design/methodology/approach
Designing, planning and implementing the quality management system is described. Under the supervision of an executive quality management board, clinic quality goals were defined. Thereafter, several quality management teams performed an actual state analysis as well as developing and realising improvement proposals. Finally a quality management manual containing binding standards and working instructions concerning all patient care, research and teaching aspects was written.
Findings
Successful certification by a neutral body ascertained that the clinic's quality management system conformed to current national and international standards while restructuring and reform improved procedural efficiency.
Originality/value
The paper shows that mplementing the quality management system requires considerable effort but patients as well as staff profit considerably from the innovation. On the whole, the positive impact on structure and workflow in a specialist clinic predominates. Therefore, implementing a quality management system in all the clinic's wards and departments is recommended.

Abstract
Purpose
Machine scheduling plays an important role in most manufacturing industries and has received a great amount of attention from operation researchers. Production scheduling is concerned with the allocation of resources and the sequencing of tasks to produce goods and services. Dispatching rules help in the identification of efficient or optimized scheduling sequences. The purpose of this paper is to consider a data mining‐based approach to discover previously unknown priority dispatching rules for the single machine scheduling problem.
Design/methodology/approach
In this work, the supervised statistical data mining algorithm, namely Bayesian, is implemented for the single machine scheduling problem. Data mining techniques are used to find hidden patterns and rules through large amounts of structured or unstructured data. The constructed training set is analyzed using Bayesian method and an efficient production schedule is proposed for machine scheduling.
Findings
After integration of naive Bayesian classification, the proposed methodology suggests an optimized scheduling sequence.
Originality/value
This paper analyzes the progressive results of a supervised learning algorithm tested with the production data along with a few of the system attributes. The data are collected from the literature and converted into the training data set suitable for implementation. The supervised data mining algorithm has not previously been explored in production scheduling.
