Abstract

Purpose

Few organizational change studies identified the aspects of change that are salient to individuals and gender in specific and that influence their work outcomes. This paper aims to assess the potential mediating effect of emotional intelligence and the moderating effect of gender in the relationship of perceived change-related uncertainty and work outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

The study analyzes the measurement model and the structural model using SmartPLS (v 3.2.7) on a sample of 413 employees working in the telecom sector collected through a non-experimental face-to-face method.

Findings

The findings support that emotional intelligence mediates the negative relationship between perceived change-related uncertainty and work outcomes. Moreover, emotional intelligence and gender have a significant interaction effect on work outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

The study uses the ability-based model of emotional intelligence to assess its impact on the proposed theoretical framework.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that organizations should hire more females at the workplace as they are less in number although they are more emotionally intelligent. As well as, females should be given equal opportunities to reach the top managerial positions by breaking the glass ceiling.

Originality/value

The study adds insights into existing knowledge; for instance, the study reveals that emotional intelligence competency is a sine qua non to personal control that delivers exceptional results in the context of perceived change-related uncertainty. The study also investigates the interaction effect of gender with emotional intelligence to scaffold the emotional intelligence competency over gender differences.

Abstract

Purpose

Although much research has examined sustainable consumption, one key factor that has been rediscovered is religion. This study aims to include religiosity as a background variable to extend the theory of planned behavior in measuring the Pakistani youth’s green purchase intentions (GPI) and green purchase behavior (GPB) of energy-efficient home appliances.

Design/methodology/approach

Built on a positivist research philosophy and a deductive approach of a quantitative design, a convenience sample of 317 participants was approached via online forms. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was used to analyze both the measurement model and the structural model.

Findings

The results suggest that religiosity impacts consumers’ beliefs to maintain control over green behavior and perceived behavioral control (PBC), followed by sustainable attitudes (SA), beliefs that significant others endorse green behavior subjective norms (SN) and GPI. Besides, PBC, SN and SA impact GPI. Furthermore, GPI and PBC impact GPB. Finally, PBC, SN and SA mediate the religiosity and GPI link. However, the moderation effect of PBC on the link of GPI with GPB was not supported.

Research limitations/implications

The model developed is specific to the Muslim population in Pakistan. Therefore, the model might only be able to be generalized to nations that have a similar culture to the Muslims in Pakistan or in other developing countries.

Originality/value

The current research advances the knowledge on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development goal (SDGs) (Goal-12) by clarifying the mechanisms whereby religiosity impacts factors of sustainable consumption including SA, PBC and SN.

Abstract

The restrictive measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to everything across the world. The global crisis hit every sphere of life. The mobility restrictive nature of the pandemic was a major blow to the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. For a country like Pakistan, with an unstable economy and struggling tourism, the pandemic served as ground zero. This chapter critically examines tourism dimensions in Pakistan and how it sustained the impact of various crises. It pays attention to the concepts of vulnerability, social and community resilience, and adaptive capacity to provide a theoretical understanding of the revival of tourism in Pakistan. It also considers the impact of COVID-led measures on the tourism industry and corresponding initiatives of the government. The chapter concludes by arguing that Pakistan should carefully monitor and assess the current debates on tourism policies and practices. The chapter suggests that the national tourism strategy should incorporate a mechanism that can address tourism in crises in addition to addressing the environmental, socio-cultural and economic impact of tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to measure the effects of corporate financial performance toward the influences of corporate growth and company asset utilization on the corporate market value.

Design/methodology/approach

This research is an explanatory research that describes the influences of one or more variables on other variables based on secondary data. This research took place in Indonesia and was carried out from 2011 to 2016.

Findings

The findings of this study are corporate growth has a significant influence on the corporate market value, implying that companies should consider the short-term and long-term profitabilities before making any investment decision; asset utilization has been confirmed to have a positive and significant influence on financial performance. Insights into asset utilization effectiveness and efficiency are important for company managers to consider in making strategic decisions upon operational activities of the company. Also, financial performance has a positive and significant influence on the corporate market value.

Originality/value

Research originality offered in this research is in the form of empirical evidence upon the influence of company asset utilization on the financial performance and corporate market value of a company. The finding of this research is expected to provide a better understanding on the role of company asset utilization in determining corporate financial performance which is known to be certain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between uncertain political events and Pakistani Stock Markets from May 1999 to December 2011.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the mean-adjusted return model and event study methodology and by comparing the market efficiency between the two government style, i.e. autocratic and democratic, the authors determined that how uncertain political events are affecting Pakistani Stock Markets.

Findings

The empirical result shows that political events have an impact on the Karachi Stock Exchange (KSE) returns. Moreover, the paper derives from the results that the KSE is inefficient for a short span of time, after 15 days KSE absorbs the noisy information. The political situation in Pakistan was more stable in autocratic government structure than in democratic structure but it is difficult to state that the stock markets are more efficient in Autocracy because only few events took place during an autocratic regime and magnitude of events was not same in the autocratic and democratic government structure.

Originality/value

This study is unique in its nature as it examines the effect of multiple political events on stock market returns in Pakistan simultaneously and is expected to contribute significantly in the capital market literature of Pakistan in particular.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the mechanisms and conditions that influence how transformational leadership affects project success through the lens of social information processing theory.

Design/methodology/approach

A dual-stage moderated mediation model was proposed wherein the effect of transformational leadership on project success is mediated by team building, and empowering climate moderates the direct and indirect effects at both the first and second stages. The model was tested based on 370 survey responses of project management practitioners from Pakistan's IT industry. The measurement model was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Moderated mediation analyses were conducted using Hayes' PROCESS macro.

Findings

The findings suggest that team-building partially mediates the effect of transformational leadership on project success. Furthermore, the conditional indirect effect of transformational leadership on project success via team-building is strengthened at both the first and second stages at higher levels of empowerment climate.

Practical implications

It is recommended that project managers and project-intensive organizations should strive to cultivate an empowerment climate to fully realize the beneficial effects of transformational leadership behaviors in enhancing positive team outcomes and, consequently, overall project performance.

Originality/value

This study broadly contributes to the literature on the influence of project managers' leadership styles on project outcomes. Specifically, we elucidate the role of empowerment climate as an important boundary condition that enhances the beneficial effects of transformational leadership. Furthermore, we extend the application of social information processing theory to the context of projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the contributing factors that affect consumer behaviour of Islamic home financing in Malaysia. The effects of perceived religiosity on property, perceived Islamic debt principle and perceived maqasid on homeownership on consumer behaviour are examined. Furthermore, the effects of perceived religiosity and consumer behaviour on religious satisfaction are also investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the theory of Islamic consumer behaviour (TiCB) as a baseline theory identified from the literature, this study proposes a conceptual model of consumer behaviour of Islamic home financing in Malaysia. Data from the 205 usable questionnaires are analysed using partial least squares (PLS).

Findings

The PLS results suggest that perceived religiosity on property, perceived Islamic debt principle and perceived maqasid on homeownership are instrumental in determining consumer behaviour, thus revealing these factors as “Islamic factors” that represent the TiCB. Furthermore, the effect of consumer behaviour on religious satisfaction is also significant, implying that good behaviour makes people happier – seeking pleasure for doing well that is blessed and approved by Allah (S.W.T).

Research limitations/implications

Two limitations are available for future studies. First, this study included only Malaysians in East Malaysia, suggesting that further testing of the proposed model should be conducted across different geographies to determine the generalisability of this study’s findings. Second, this study’s contributions are narrowed down to the factors examined. These limitations, however, provide directions for further future research.

Practical implications

The results provide directions to bank managers to effectively manage Islamic home financing services for the benefit of their customers. Islamic home financing products tend to be used by consumers if the patronage factors investigated are considered more profoundly.

Originality/value

This study examines the behaviour of consumers of Islamic home financing using the proposed framework derived from TiCB.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the impact of general elections on the stock returns of the politically connected group affiliated firms of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the market model to assess the impact of political connections (PCs) on abnormal stock returns, before and after election events. We have used share price data of non-financial firms of Pakistan for the years 2008-2013.

Findings

It has been found that behavior of cumulative average abnormal returns (CAAR) is significantly different for standalone and politically connected group affiliated firms. The results reveal that CAARs of politically connected group affiliated firms have experienced less deviation as compared to stand alone firms. Therefore, it is argued that politically connected group firms may reduce the impact of political uncertainty on stock returns in comparison to stand alone firms.

Practical implications

This study is helpful for policy regulators of Pakistan to devise appropriate policies to maintain a level playing field for politically connected and standalone firms.

Originality/value

This study provides a new dimension to understand the role and association of PCs and general elections with stock markets returns.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the effect of insurance specific characteristics, corporate governance and risk reporting attributes, Shari’ah board and inflation rate on the financial performance of Takaful and cooperative insurance industries.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a dynamic panel generalized method of moment’s system estimation, the author investigates determinants of financial performance as measured by the net premium written, earning ratio and profit margin.

Findings

Company size, insurance penetration, risk reporting and board size significantly explain the financial performance of both types of insurance companies. The effect of Shari’ah board and capital intensity on the financial performance of Takaful insurance is overall positive. The non-executive directors may negatively affect the financial performance. Additionally, positive relationship was also found between inflation rate and financial performance of cooperative insurance.

Research limitations/implications

The typical shortcomings of a content analysis-based research apply to the measurement of operational risk reporting variable. Some modifications need to be made if it were to be used for exploring the financial performance of other Islamic financial institutions. The structural model used in this paper can be used as a generic platform to develop a specific framework for other types of organizations.

Practical implications

Some suggestions may be functional for Islamic insurance regulatory authorities to intensify the transparency, and for insurers to channel an additional source of investment funding toward economic sectors.

Originality/value

The present study seeks to fill a demanding gap in the literature by providing new empirical evidence on the factors that influence the financial performance of the Islamic insurance sector. Moreover, the paper tries to distinguish and identify the determinants of the performance for Takaful and cooperative insurance companies operating in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to determine a comprehensive coursework for teaching quality management in the universities of developing countries i.e. Pakistan pertinent to the construction industry. Additionally, a framework was also developed based on the results.

Design/methodology/approach

Factors and course contents of quality management are extracted through a content analysis of the published literature. Further, a questionnaire survey is conducted involving 150 professionals to assess the requirements of the industry and academic professionals of the construction industry for effective quality management. Finally, for getting a more objective perspective, using quality function deployment (QFD) matrix a framework is developed.

Findings

The results show the level of importance of each design requirement. We can identify the design requirements through which we can fulfill the needs and demands of the stakeholders. Contents like benchmarking, supply chain management, six sigma and other data analysis methods, costing and auditing of quality, customer satisfaction analysis, TQM: theory and practices and ISO certification processes and procedures should be included in any course program related to quality management pertinent to the construction industry. Along with these contents, workshops and seminars must be arranged to address the user requirement for increased leadership and communication skills.

Originality/value

There is a lack of literature available on course content for quality management in the universities for the construction sector, therefore, a huge scope of future research in the field of quality management in the construction industry needs to be investigated. This research highlights the most significant quality management factors and course contents as per the requirement of industry professionals. Therefore, this study adds to the existing body of knowledge by developing a robust framework that will help decision-makers and top management to develop constructive quality management course work at university level that will help in producing qualified and trained quality professionals to the construction industry.
