Abstract

It doesn't take an expert to work out that interactivity is the key to good training. From the nursery school child on the teacher's knee to the university tutorial, people learn best when they're involved, talking, reacting, DOING something. That might seem to be an argument against distance learning; but distance learning is often the most convenient, cost‐effective way of providing for a training need. And interactive video — good, well designed interactive video — can provide uniform and efficient individual training which involves every student, every inch of the way.

Abstract

A new entry is required in the list of Occupational Classifications — namely Degree Broker. The writer is unaware who coined the title but one person to use it is John Courage; his is the signature on letters from Neil Gibson & Company, a firm located in Sudbury, a charming small town in Suffolk, England. Neil Gibson & Co. advertise regularly in the UK Press — The Times, Observer, Guardian, Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday — and periodicals such as The Director. All respondents receive details of the University de la Romande, a Swiss‐based organisation, for whom the firm are sole British agents. Those not responding to that communication receive a follow‐up letter:

Abstract

THE symposium was opened by Sir Edward Bullard, Director of the N.P.L., who welcomed those who had come, particularly from afar. He explained that the symposia were a new activity on the part of the N.P.L., and had only been possible since a lecture hall had become available there. Two were now being held in each year, the intention being that one should have an academic bias and the other be more applied.

Abstract

The following list focuses on, but is not limited to, lesser‐known printed publications which feature writing and images about sex and sexual politics. Besides representing a fair amount of irreverence, satire, scholarship, and unabashed eroticism, the list includes citations for material on topics sure to offend: pedophilia (some would say child abuse) and fetishism, to name just two. For an extensive list of more mainstream sex periodicals, consult Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory (Bowker). Don't bother looking there for categories like EROTICA or SEX, however. Ulrich's cities titles like Gent (“Home of the D‐cups”), Penthouse (circulation 2 million, but how many library subscriptions?), Swinging Times, and Uncut (“The magazine of the natural man”), under MEN'S INTERESTS, while some gay and lesbian erotica appears under the heading HOMOSEXUALITY. Also: while accounting for very little sexually‐oriented material of a general nature—Playboy (under MEN), Playgirl (under WOMEN), and Yellow Silk (under GENERAL EDITORIAL)—Bill and Linda Katz's Magazines for libraries, another Bowker publication, features an extensive annotated bibliography of lesbian and gay periodicals (Polly Thistlethwaite and Daniel Tsang, compilers), which includes titles like NAMBLA Bulletin: Voice of the North American Man/Boy Love Association and On Our Backs.
