Abstract

Our library was one of the first to receive an M300 Workstation, in late March 1984. We realized that we were in some respects venturing into new territory but, with the assistance of SUNY/ OCLC network staff and generous help from the college's computer center, we forged ahead, solving problems as they came up and slowly putting the power of the Workstation to work for us. Because sharing experiences and solutions to problems has proven invaluable to users of other microcomputers, I hope the following discussion will be helpful to those who own or are considering acquiring an M300 Workstation.

After some experimentation, I found the following modifications to the batch files of the OCLC terminal software v[ersion]2.00 make it possible to load the software from, and to save screens to, a hard disk.

Abstract

If you're getting frustrated searching through 60 disks to track down a file, it's time to get organized. First, determine what you have, using the DIR command. Print out listings by pressing <SHIFT> <PrtSc> when the directory is displayed or by adding >PRN to the DIR command. For example, DIR B: >PRN redirects [see page 14] the directory listing to the printer and you get a hard copy without displaying the list. Once you get complete lists of what you have, determine what you no longer need and erase those files. Then, if necessary, transfer files to other disks so related files are on the same disks.

Abstract

In April of 1984, the University of Kentucky Libraries were fortunate enough to receive three OCLC M300 terminals. In August of 1984, a decision was made to place one of these terminals in the Agriculture Library to test the versatility of the terminal and assist with a proposed indexing project.

Abstract

Let me first offer my understanding of all. To me this means every employee, whether he be manager, supervisor or assistant. We could extend the use of the term to include customers on whose buying we depend; we should also include government, local and national, because we can work only within the laws and regulations they make.

Abstract

Investigates the differences in protocols between arbitral tribunals and courts, with particular emphasis on US, Greek and English law. Gives examples of each country and its way of using the law in specific circumstances, and shows the variations therein. Sums up that arbitration is much the better way to gok as it avoids delays and expenses, plus the vexation/frustration of normal litigation. Concludes that the US and Greek constitutions and common law tradition in England appear to allow involved parties to choose their own judge, who can thus be an arbitrator. Discusses e‐commerce and speculates on this for the future.

Abstract

On April 2, 1987, IBM unveiled a series of long‐awaited new hardware and software products. The new computer line, dubbed the Personal Systems 30, 50, 60, and 80, seems destined to replace the XT and AT models that are the mainstay of the firm's current personal computer offerings. The numerous changes in hardware and software, while representing improvements on previous IBM technology, will require users purchasing additional computers to make difficult choices as to which of the two IBM architectures to adopt.

Abstract

What is it about academia anyway? We profess to hate it, spend endless amounts of time complaining about it, and yet we in academia will do practically anything to stay. The pay may be low, job security elusive, and in the end, it's not the glamorous work we envisioned it would be. Yet, it still holds fascination and interest for us. This is an article about American academic fiction. By academic fiction, I mean novels whosemain characters are professors, college students, and those individuals associated with academia. These works reveal many truths about the higher education experience not readily available elsewhere. We learn about ourselves and the university community in which we work.
