Abstract

Recent efforts to formulate strategies that will turn Qatar's capital city into a global hub have given rise to a debate about the morphological and functional composition of one of Doha's most prominent areas - West Bay. At the end of the 20th century West Bay, also known as Diplomatic Quarter, was chosen by public initiatives to become the new Central Business District of Doha. Today, the appeal of West Bay as a business hub is contested by other emerging urban centres – such as the highly integrated Al Sadd area, which has attracted a wide range of advanced producer service sectors. It is therefore the objective of this paper to investigate the spatial configuration of Doha's West Bay, which arguably lays the foundations for the socio-economic interdependencies necessary for its vitality and sustenance. In order to quantify its intrinsic urban complexities, Bill Hillier's space syntax methodology is applied, which elucidates, in various scales, global and local grid conditions, and thus can be used for assessments regarding the distribution of land use patterns and infrastructural networks.

Abstract

Purpose

Insight in the temperature distribution on the internal and external surface of the nacelle is of great importance during the design phase of an aircraft. However, detailed information is not always needed. In a preliminary project stage or during parametric optimization, short analysis times are often more crucial than high accuracy. In such cases, the global insight in the temperature levels suffices to gain understanding of the relevance and influence of certain parameters. Nevertheless, estimating the maximum temperature for the most adverse conditions should also be done before a prototype is built. Therefore, this study aims to present and compare a simplified and an advanced methodology for the analysis of engine bay cooling and ventilation systems as well as heat transfer in the nacelle in a small airplane equipped with a turboprop engine in the tractor arrangement.

Design/methodology/approach

Both approaches included conductive, convective and radiative heat transfer in the engine bay of the small airplane I-23 as well as heat conduction in the nacelle made of material with anisotropic thermal conductivity. The one-dimensional (1D) model assumed that the nacelle with the air flow and engine was represented by a lumped thermal model in which heat was exchanged between the different lumped segments (the nodes) and the flowing air and engine. The three-dimensional (3D) model was based on the continuous control volume approach for heat, fluid flow and thermal radiation as well as on realizable k-ε turbulence model. Both models used commercial software.

Findings

The temperature distribution at the internal and external surface of the top nacelle was calculated. The 1D model predicted a temperature per node (per segment) while the 3D model was able to determine its values accurately and find the location of hot spots. Considering the complex geometry of the engine bay and nacelle and the assumed simplification, the obtained 1D and 3D results agreed quite well.

Practical implications

Both models will help in the development of new ventilation and cooling systems of the engine bay and nacelle as well as in the selection of materials for parts of the top cowling in the newly redesigned airplane I-23 equipped with a turboprop engine. In addition, the methodology presented in this paper might be applied in the development of other airplanes.

Originality/value

The 1D and 3D models of complex heat transfer inside the engine bay and in the nacelle of the newly re-designed airplane I-23 were elaborated and compared.

Abstract

Purpose

Many factors contribute to public rail transit use in an urban network. However, a dysfunctional relationship between the built environment and the transport system significantly deters such use. Architects, urban designers, town planners and policymakers must understand the factors that promote or deter pedestrian use of the urban environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper investigates four connectivity and walkability factors for three different metro stations in Doha, Qatar: Al Aziziyah, Hamad Hospital and West Bay. The analysis includes pedestrian sheds, block sizes, ground-level land uses and connectedness in the urban spatial network based on catchment contour maps using space syntax.

Findings

The results indicate the three metro stations and neighborhoods are representative of diverse type of neighborhoods in Doha: relatively compact but expansive for the Hamad Hospital Station area, metrically and topologically restrictive due to the poor planning and the peninsular location of the reclaimed land in the West Bay area, and expansive, shallow and reliant on attraction for the Al Waab transportation corridor associated with Al Aziziyah Station.

Research limitations/implications

Time factors and temporary closure/capacity reductions due to the global pandemic restricted planned efforts to collect more pedestrian use data based on passive observations and preference choices using surveys during the study. Nonetheless, adapting the investigation to the circumstances produced significant findings.

Social implications

The analysis can help us develop better guidelines and diagnostic tools to calibrate design and planning strategies promoting more walkable, healthy and sustainable neighborhoods.

Originality/value

The study is original due to examining stations of the new Doha Metro for the first time. However, it relies on well-established representational techniques in urban morphology and space syntax research.

Abstract

Purpose

The simulations of grid-resolved rod vortex generators (RVGs) require high computational cost and time. Additionally, the computational mesh topology must be adjusted to rods geometries. The purpose of this study is to propose the new source term model for RVG.

Design/methodology/approach

The model was proposed by modification of Bender, Anderson, Yagle (BAY) model used to predict flows around different type of vortex generators (VGs) – vanes. Original BAY model was built on lifting line theory. The proposed model was implemented in ANSYS Fluent by means of the user-defined function technique. Additional momentum and energy sources are imposed to transport equations.

Findings

The computational results of source term model were validated against experimental data and numerical simulation results for grid-resolved rod. It was shown that modified BAY model can be successfully used for RVG in complex cases. An example of BAY model application for RVG on transonic V2C airfoil with strongly oscillating shock waves is presented. Aerodynamic performance predicted numerically by means of both approaches (grid resolved RVG and modeled) is in good agreement, what indicates application opportunity of the proposed model to complex cases.

Practical implications

Modified BAY model can be used to simulate the influence of RVGs in complex real cases. It allows for time/cost reduction if the location or distribution of RVG has to be optimized on a profile, wing or in the channel.

Originality/value

In the paper, the new modification of BAY model was proposed to simulate RVGs. The presented results are innovative because of original approach to model RVGs.
