In 1980 instruction librarians questioned the need to learn the theory behind research as well as the mechanics of library research. Student research is now much more complex, but the same need to understand the theory and the mechanics still exists.

I am concerned with the training of instruction librarians. By drawing attention to some of the differences between work at the reference desk and work in the classroom, I hope to show that the traditional on‐the‐job training for classroom instruction is both inappropriate and inadvisable. Alternative methods of training for library instruction will then be briefly assessed.

Library instruction has become a public services program at most academic libraries. As such, it has the potential of being a library's most innovative and visible program. Yet, no matter how innovative, such a program cannot become visible without the support of the entire university community. Librarians, administrators, faculty members, and students alike must perceive a need and value for an instructional program if it is to be implemented successfully.
