Abstract
Reviews the role of clinical directors from outside the usual managerial framework to challenge the managerial myth applied to professionals who take on these roles. Defines management, managing, managerialism and leadership and develops an empirical framework to compare the roles of doctors and managers. Uses the framework to identify the cognitive map that clinical directors use and how they perceive their role. An emergent model illustrates how clinical directors combine a new cognitive map with their existing professional behaviours to undertake their role. Clinical directors both perceived and described their role in terms of leadership rather than management reinforcing the inappropriateness of using managerial frameworks. Instead clinical directors should be developed and evaluated as professional leaders. This raises wider questions of whether management and the language of management are either useful or appropriate for professionals in the NHS or whether their value is really a myth.

Abstract
The NHS and Community Care Act instituted a fundamental split between the purchasers and providers of health care; shifting the NHS from a bureaucratic process driven organisation to one which is market led and output orientated. This paper explores cultural change and implementation strategies in a major first wave Trust. The case study is a story of struggle woven around the vision and determination of the Chief Executive to create a new style NHS through second order cultural change. The organisation has over 8,000 employees, many long servers with entrenched views and diverse professional backgrounds.

THE question of display in libraries becomes more important with the days. It is therefore a peculiar pleasure to us to publish a fine article by Mr. Savage on this. From his earliest days the ex‐President has been deeply and practically interested in book‐display. We believe that nearly forty years ago he and Mr. Jast worked out many experiments in it which are occasionally revived by those who have quite forgotten their origin. He was, we think, the first librarian here to take an ordinary shop as a branch library and dress its window as if it were a bookshop. Before him few English libraries used colour to any extent, or were aware of the aesthetic value of plants, flowers, curtains and well‐shaped furniture.

OWING to the comparatively early date in the year of the Library Association Conference, this number of THE LIBRARY WORLD is published so that it may be in the hands of our readers before it begins. The official programme is not in the hands of members at the time we write, but the circumstances are such this year that delay has been inevitable. We have dwelt already on the good fortune we enjoy in going to the beautiful West‐Country Spa. At this time of year it is at its best, and, if the weather is more genial than this weather‐chequered year gives us reason to expect, the Conference should be memorable on that account alone. The Conference has always been the focus of library friendships, and this idea, now that the Association is so large, should be developed. To be a member is to be one of a freemasonry of librarians, pledged to help and forward the work of one another. It is not in the conference rooms alone, where we listen, not always completely awake, to papers not always eloquent or cleverly read, that we gain most, although no one would discount these; it is in the hotels and boarding houses and restaurants, over dinner tables and in the easy chairs of the lounges, that we draw out really useful business information. In short, shop is the subject‐matter of conference conversation, and only misanthropic curmudgeons think otherwise.
