Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the interplay between male and female board members’ beliefs about women’s competence to fill board positions (valence), the perceived benefits of a greater gender-balanced boardroom (value) and the significance attributed to the gender quota law as a relevant instrument in eliciting change in board composition.
Design/methodology/approach
Looking through the lens of expectancy-value theory, the authors investigate whether the perceived benefits of a gender quota law mediate the path between the beliefs about women’s competence to become board members and the perceived benefits of a greater gender-balanced representation in the boardroom. In addition, the authors investigate whether female and male board members share the same beliefs about a gender-balanced representation.
Findings
The results show that there are differences in beliefs about women’s competencies to become board members and the perceived benefits of a greater gender-balanced boardroom. Female board members hold stronger beliefs on the competence of women to fill board positions and, thus, assign greater importance to the gender quota law, which, in turn, impacts the greater significance attributed to equal representation of women in the boardroom.
Practical implications
The findings shed new light on the debate concerning gender quotas aimed at promoting gender-balanced boardrooms by pointing out that differences in value expectations between male and female board members may prevent intraboard gender-equal dynamics.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the literature by adding new insights on how male and female board members perceive the value of legally bound gender quotas, in association with their beliefs about women’s competence to fill board positions (valence) and their expectations in terms of the beneficial outcomes of a more gender-balanced board composition.

Abstract
Purpose
Building on contingency theory, this paper aims to investigate the extent to which the “4Ps international adaptation strategy” and internationalization intensity shape the servitization–profitability relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors use primary (survey) and secondary (archival) data to perform multiple regression analysis.
Findings
The results indicate a positive relationship between servitization and profitability, and international intensity strengthens this association. The effects, however, are not consistent across the 4Ps – the price international adaptation strategy strengthens the positive relationship between servitization and profitability, while product and place international adaptation strategies weaken that relationship.
Practical implications
The findings have implications for the role of international intensity and the 4Ps in the marketing servitization context.
Originality/value
The study provides guidance for small firms in realizing higher performance by leveraging the 4Ps in the servitization context. Counter to expectations, placement and product lead to lower performance with increasing servitization, whereas price strengthens this relationship. The study adds to the international industrial management and marketing literature, providing evidence that contingency factors such as international marketing mix adaptation/standardization strategies moderate the servitization–profitability relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
Building on the premise that top managers' characteristics affect firm outcomes, the study aims to examine whether the impostor feelings of top managers are associated with firm performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This study uses survey and regression estimation.
Findings
The results show that there is no strong association between the impostor phenomenon and firm performance, when considering the overall sample. However, in the case of women who experience strong impostor feelings, performance is negatively affected. There is no evidence that being a CEO or workload are mechanisms that explain this result.
Practical implications
Improving the understanding of whether top manager impostor feelings sabotage or improve firm performance can encourage managers to engage in preventive actions to overcome or explore its effects adequately so that positive firm outcomes are fostered.
Originality/value
Despite the economic importance of how top managers' judgment affects their decisions, little is known about how the cognitive frames of their top managers affect firm outcomes. In particular, there is no clear understanding of how top managers' feelings of inadequacy, intellectual phoniness and deceitfulness (the impostor phenomenon) affect firm profitability.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to provide a comparative portrait of the profile of men and women in the boardrooms of listed companies (Euronext Lisbon, Portugal) during the first stage of the gender quota law, by comparing the profile of those board members appointed before the mandated quota law and those appointed after it. This study also seeks to contribute to a critical review of the main reservations expressed by some core institutional actors, who initially voiced their concern that it might be difficult to find women in equal conditions to men in terms of their cumulative experience and qualifications to serve as board members.
Design/methodology/approach
In addition to providing a comparative descriptive analysis of male and female board members’ profiles before and after the mandated gender quota law, an aggregate professional endowments measure (professional endowments Index) is also calculated.
Findings
The research findings show that, in the first stage of the quota law, men and women appointed as board members after the mandated gender quota law are fundamentally similar in their professional attributes, forming a more homogeneous boardroom than those holding board positions before it.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature on the profile of the men and women serving on the publicly listed company boards in Portugal, by comparing their profiles before and after the mandated gender quota law. This study also fills a gap in the literature, as studies about gender quotas and corporate boards relating to Portugal and Southern European countries in general are still relatively scant. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study carried out into the gender quota law on corporate boards in Portugal.

Abstract
We present a critical literature review debating Brazilian research on social and environmental accounting (SEA). The aim of this study is to understand the role of politics in the construction of hegemonies in SEA research in Brazil. In particular, we examine the role of hegemony in relation to the co-option of SEA literature and sustainability in the Brazilian context by the logic of development for economic growth in emerging economies. The methodological approach adopts a post-structural perspective that reflects Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory. The study employs a hermeneutical, rhetorical approach to understand and classify 352 Brazilian research articles on SEA. We employ Brown and Fraser’s (2006) categorizations of SEA literature to help in our analysis: the business case, the stakeholder–accountability approach, and the critical case. We argue that the business case is prominent in Brazilian studies. Second-stage analysis suggests that the major themes under discussion include measurement, consulting, and descriptive approach. We argue that these themes illustrate the degree of influence of the hegemonic politics relevant to emerging economics, as these themes predominantly concern economic growth and a capitalist context. This paper discusses trends and practices in the Brazilian literature on SEA and argues that the focus means that SEA avoids critical debates of the role of capitalist logics in an emerging economy concerning sustainability. We urge the Brazilian academy to understand the implications of its reifying agenda and engage, counter-hegemonically, in a social and political agenda beyond the hegemonic support of a particular set of capitalist interests.

Abstract
Purpose
As high-tech industries are the main responsible for research and development (R&D), the purpose of this paper is to investigate some of the possible determinants of R&D investment in this type of industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The analysis is based on a sample of European high-tech industries represented both by countries of civil law origin and common law origin. The authors used data from 155 high-tech firms in the period between 2011 and 2016. The sample was collected from Amadeus database. The panel data methodology was used to test the dependence of R&D expenses ratio according to different variables. Specifically, the authors have used the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimation method.
Findings
The results point out that there are differences in the explanation of the R&D ratio depending on whether the authors are dealing with countries of civil legal origin or common legal origin. The evidence also suggests that the intangible assets, contrary to the expect result, have a negative influence on R&D. Probably in this recovery time, as de global financial crisis and the sovereign debt crisis for Eurozone countries, the high-tech firms are using their intangible assets to create value and not for more investments in R&D. Companies are not renewing their asset stocks.
Originality/value
As high-tech companies are traditionally rich in R&D, this research can contribute with additional pieces to the knowledge of the factors that contribute to this. Thereby, this study may be interesting for managers, investors and civil society. This study adds value as it is unique in addressing this topic on this new dimension, with respect to the sample and indicators presented.

Como las industrias de alta tecnología son las principales responsables por la I + D, proponemos investigar algunos de los posibles determinantes de la inversión en I + D en este tipo de industria.
Diseño/metodología
Nuestro análisis se basa en una muestra de indústrias europeas de alta tecnología representadas tanto por países de origen civil como por derecho consuetudinario. Utilizamos datos de 155 empresas de alta tecnología en el período comprendido entre 2011 y 2016. Nuestra muestra se recopiló de la base de datos Amadeus. La metodología Panel Data se utilizó para evaluar la dependencia del índice de gastos de I + D de acuerdo con diferentes variables. Específicamente, hemos utilizado el método de estimación del Método Generalizado de Momentos (GMM).
Resultados
Nuestros resultados señalan que existen diferencias en la explicación de la relación de I + D dependiendo de si estamos tratando con países de origen legal civil u origen legal común. Nuestra evidencia también sugiere que los activos intangibles, al contrario del resultado esperado, tienen una influencia negativa en la I + D. Probablemente en este tiempo de recuperación económica, desde la crisis financiera mundial y la crisis de la deuda soberana para los países de la zona euro, las empresas de alta tecnología están utilizando sus activos intangibles para crear valor y no para más inversiones en I + D. Las empresas no renuevan sus activos.
Originalidad/valor
Dado que las empresas de alta tecnología son tradicionalmente ricas en I + D, esta investigación puede contribuir con piezas adicionales al conocimiento de los factores que contribuyen a esto. Por lo tanto, este artículo puede ser interesante para gerentes, inversores y la sociedad civil. Este artículo agrega valor, ya que es único al abordar este tema en esta nueva dimensión, con respecto a la muestra y los indicadores presentados.
Objetivo
Como as indústrias de alta tecnologia são as principais responsáveis pela investigação e desenvolvimento, neste trabalho propomos investigar alguns dos possíveis determinantes da I&D nesse tipo de indústria.
Metodologia
A Nossa análise é baseada em uma amostra de indústrias europeias de alta tecnologia representadas por países de origem do direito civil e de direito comum. Foram utilizados dados de 155 empresas de alta tecnologia no período compreendido entre 2011 e 2016. Os dados foram recolhidos da base de dados Amadeus. Foi usada a metodologia de Dados em Painel para testar a dependência entre as despesas de I&D e as diferentes variáveis explicativas. Especificamente, usamos o método de estimação Método generalizado de momentos (GMM).
Resultados
Os nossos resultados apontam que existem diferenças na explicação do índice de I&D, dependendo de estarmos lidando com países de origem legal civil ou de origem legal comum. As evidências também sugerem que os ativos intangíveis, ao contrário do resultado esperado, influenciam negativamente a I&D. Provavelmente neste período de recuperação económica, desde a crise financeira global e a crise da dívida soberana dos países da zona do euro, as empresas de alta tecnologia estão a usar os seus ativos intangíveis para criar valor e não para mais investimentos em I&D. As empresas não estão a renovar os seus ativos.
Originalidade/valor
Como as empresas de alta tecnologia são tradicionalmente ricas em I&D, este trabalho pode contribuir com peças adicionais para o conhecimento dos fatores que contribuem para esse facto. Assim, este artigo pode ser interessante para gestores, investidores e sociedade civil. Trata-se de uma investigação que agrega valor, pois é único ao abordar este tópico nesta nova dimensão, com relação à amostra e às variáveis apresentadas.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to illustrate the potential of the many centuries-old universities buildings, in European cities, in a historical, architectural, aesthetic and symbolic dimension to diversify and differentiate urban tourist destinations supply.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a qualitative study supported by the analysis of public and classified documents, for which the main source is based on webography, and by conducting interviews.
Findings
The deficit of cultural tours, in the dimension of built heritage, is identified as one of the weaknesses of the city of Porto, as tourist destination, to be overcome. The interviewees are unanimous in recognizing the cultural, architectural and aesthetic impact of the historic buildings of the University of Porto, and most of them strongly agree with the integration of this legacy into the tourist offer of the city. The strategic sense of the heritage is emphasized, because of its location in charismatic areas of the city. The practice of effective networking, however, falls short of what is required to achieve ambitious and consistent objectives.

Originality/value
Emphasis is placed on the cities’ built heritage as a type of heritage that defines their uniqueness. The dissemination of cultural itineraries, which allows tourists and the community itself a broader and deeper cultural knowledge, contributes to the effective understanding of historic cities’ tourism. Given the scarcity of studies on the relationship between historic university buildings and tourism, the relevance of research focuses on highlighting the contribution of these cultural elements, through a network-based dynamic, to urban tourism destinations’ attractiveness. In particular, the University of Porto's potential for the integration of structured tourism products that contribute to the diversification and differentiation of the city of Porto as a destination is illustrated.

Abstract
Cities are becoming smarter and more optimized because of digital transformation, reducing costs, increasing safety, attracting investment, ensuring sustainability, and increasing viability. As a result of this optimization, they are becoming smart cities. Smart cities use the Internet of Things’ devices, such as connected sensors, lights, and smart meters, to improve infrastructure and design by gathering and analyzing real-time citizen data. In this research, different conceptions of smart cities and their interconnections with digital transformation are presented. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to analyze how digital transformation may help manage smart cities. As a result, a thorough and integrated evaluation of the SCOPUS database will be conducted in order to address the following questions: (1) What are smart cities? (2) What is digital transformation? (3) How does digital transformation help to manage smart cities? The results point out that technologies and digital abundance, which include artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Internet of Things, play a crucial role in managing a controlled and automated infrastructure in smart cities. These favor the development of suitable places to live, work, and have fun, with a better quality of life for everyone.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to understand the information phenomenon through the means of informational practice – the way of acting that gives identity to a group – in a social field and knowledge domain.
Design/methodology/approach
By relating Pierre Bourdieu's sociology of culture to the domain analysis approach of Birger Hjørland, the intention was to achieve a comprehensive interpretation of the structure which generates the discourse communities and, also, of the social structure from which they are derived. All of these form the conditions for understanding the efforts, objectives and interests of the actors in the social field that causes them to develop determined informational practices. The field of architecture was elected for analysis.
Findings
The conclusions show that both the products and subjects of a domain of knowledge, inserted in social fields, are expressions of their informational practice.
Research limitations/implications
The authors believe the theoretical model based on Bourdieu and Hjørland's concepts, here built to analyze the architecture domain, may be used to analyze other domains.
Originality/value
Domain analysis is employed as an approach to the study of the information aspects but here supported by the sociological concepts of Bourdieu. Thus, it is possible to understand what, how and why the informational practices are constituted inside a domain of knowledge, and, fundamentally, interpret the historical, cultural, and social dimensions that influence the construction of information.
