Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to overcome the lack of methodologies for optimizing the volume of bulky low-frequency inductors that the authors came across with when working on the design of hybrid active power filters. Sound work was published concerning this well-known technology, but it became evident that the mentioned optimization topic was left unaddressed.
Design/methodology/approach
Using the Lagrange multipliers optimization method combined with the electromagnetic laws of inductor design, it was possible to establish a new design method to determine the optimal solutions that fulfil any given scenario of specifications. In other words, it is now possible to obtain the inductor’s geometric and electric parameters that not only satisfy the system’s electromagnetic requirements but also lead to smaller, lighter or economical solutions.
Findings
A generalized set of equations was obtained to facilitate the calculations of all the inductor-building parameters. As expected, these equations take as inputs the inductor’s required inductance, its maximum current and the desired resistance, but also a customizable cost function. The later cost function will optimize the inductor’s volumes of copper and iron and can be settled, among other purposes, for minimizing the total weight, volume or cost.
Originality/value
All the mathematical expressions to obtain the general optimal solutions are given as well as practical graphics for the three above-mentioned optimization criteria. Using these charts, the reader will be able to obtain by simple inspection the optimal solutions for a large, generalized universe of intended specifications.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the processes of introducing apps (Easy Taxi and Uber) in the work routine of taxi and private drivers, exploring their work relations and identifying new forms of relationship between them and their passengers. The authors expose the complexity in which such processes occur in a dialogical way, aligning poststructuralist notions of actor–network theory with theorizations on subjectivity production.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 drivers of Easy Taxi and Uber apps in three Brazilian capitals.
Findings
Apps came to play a central role in the work practice of the drivers interviewed. The authors suggest that they offer more security, convenience, accessibility and agility, going beyond dependent forms of working and living, in overlapping networks and connections, enacting entities that guide workers and users to an increasingly programmed way of life.
Practical implications
New forms of thinking managerial relations with taxi and private drivers work and their work relations with other drivers and passengers.
Social implications
This kind of technology not only generates new social relations but also activates mechanisms of subjectivation that reverberate new forms of relating, working and living in contemporaneity.
Originality/value
Approaches on subjectivity regarding the adoption of technology in the practice of work in the contemporaneity, with the emergence of new working relations mediated by e-hailing technology.

Abstract
We present a critical literature review debating Brazilian research on social and environmental accounting (SEA). The aim of this study is to understand the role of politics in the construction of hegemonies in SEA research in Brazil. In particular, we examine the role of hegemony in relation to the co-option of SEA literature and sustainability in the Brazilian context by the logic of development for economic growth in emerging economies. The methodological approach adopts a post-structural perspective that reflects Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory. The study employs a hermeneutical, rhetorical approach to understand and classify 352 Brazilian research articles on SEA. We employ Brown and Fraser’s (2006) categorizations of SEA literature to help in our analysis: the business case, the stakeholder–accountability approach, and the critical case. We argue that the business case is prominent in Brazilian studies. Second-stage analysis suggests that the major themes under discussion include measurement, consulting, and descriptive approach. We argue that these themes illustrate the degree of influence of the hegemonic politics relevant to emerging economics, as these themes predominantly concern economic growth and a capitalist context. This paper discusses trends and practices in the Brazilian literature on SEA and argues that the focus means that SEA avoids critical debates of the role of capitalist logics in an emerging economy concerning sustainability. We urge the Brazilian academy to understand the implications of its reifying agenda and engage, counter-hegemonically, in a social and political agenda beyond the hegemonic support of a particular set of capitalist interests.

The present research study aims to conduct a thematic literature review of the negative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on the tourism industry.
Abstract
Purpose
The present research study aims to conduct a thematic literature review of the negative impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) on the tourism industry.
Design/methodology/approach
The research study is based on a comprehensive review of prior research by various authors on AI and its negative consequences in the tourism industry.
Findings
Research indicates that integrating AI technologies in the tourism industry leads to negative consequences. While AI enhances operational efficiency and personalizes customer experiences, it also presents significant challenges, for example, AI replaces labor and the interaction between the tourist and the service provider decreases. New risks are emerging in various areas of tourism that need to be managed to ensure that they do not have negative impacts.
Originality/value
The paper provides a comprehensive review of the negative impacts of AI technologies on the tourism industry, highlighting the need for a balanced approach that integrates human elements with technological advancements. It offers valuable insights into the potential drawbacks of AI, urging stakeholders to consider these challenges when implementing AI-driven solutions in tourism.
