Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an experimental evaluation of geometric errors on the edges of parts manufactured by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental plan was conducted by building parts in ABS thermoplastic resin on a commercially available machine with given combinations of the three geometric variables (inclination, included and incidence angle) defined in the first part of the paper. Edges on built parts were inspected on a two-dimensional non-contact profilometer to measure position and form errors.

Findings

The analysis of measurement results revealed that the edge-related variables have significant influences on the geometric errors. The interpretation of error variations with respect to the different angles confirmed the actual occurrence of the previously discussed error causes. As an additional result, quantitative predictions of the errors were provided as a function of angle values.

Research limitations/implications

The experimental results refer to fixed process settings (material, FDM machine, layer thickness, build parameters, scan strategies).

Originality/value

The two-part paper is apparently the first to have studied the edges of additively manufactured parts with respect to geometric accuracy, a widely studied topic for surface features.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the problem of the geometric accuracy of edges in parts manufactured by the Fused Deposition Modeling process, as a preliminary step for an experimental investigation.

Methodology/approach

Three geometric variables (inclination, included and incidence angles) were defined for an edge. The influence of each variable on the geometric errors was explained with reference to specific causes related to physical phenomena and process constraints.

Findings

Occurrence conditions for all causes were determined and visualized in a process map, which was also developed into a software procedure for the diagnosis of quality issues on digital models of the parts.

Research limitations/implications

The process map was developed by only empirical considerations and does not allow to predict the amount of geometric errors. In the second part of the paper, experimental tests will help to extend and validate the prediction criteria.

Practical implications

As demonstrated by an example, the results allow to predict the occurrence of visible defects on the edges of a part before manufacturing it with a given build orientation.

Originality/value

In literature, the geometric accuracy of additively manufactured parts is only related to surface features. The paper shows that the quality of edges depends on additional variables and causes to be carefully controlled by process choices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for simulating the profile of part edges as a result of the FDM process. Deviations from nominal edge shape are predicted as a function of the layer thickness and three characteristic angles depending on part geometry and build orientation.

Design/methodology/approach

Typical patterns of edge profiles were observed on sample FDM parts and interpreted as the effects of possible toolpath generation strategies. An algorithm was developed to generate edge profiles consistent with the patterns expected for any combination of input variables.

Findings

Experimental tests confirmed that the simulation procedure can correctly predict basic geometric properties of edge profiles such as frequency, amplitude and shape of periodic asperities.

Research limitations/implications

The algorithm takes into account only a subset of the error causes recognized in previous studies. Additional causes could be integrated in the simulation to improve the estimation of geometric errors.

Practical implications

Edge simulation may help avoid process choices that result in aesthetic and functional defects on FDM parts.

Originality/value

Compared to the statistical estimation of geometric errors, graphical simulation allows a more detailed characterization of edge quality and a better diagnosis of error causes.

Abstract

The major objective of this study is to inspect the differences in the effect of derivatives on the stability between banks from emerging countries and those from recently developed countries.

According to the repercussions of the recent financial crisis, we divide the whole period into normal period “the pre-crisis period,” 2003–2006, and turbulent period “the crisis & post-crisis period,” 2007–2011. We use the Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) estimator technique developed by Blundell and Bond (1998) to estimate our regressions.

Our main conclusions show that, in general, using derivatives by banks from emerging countries deteriorates their stability especially during the turbulent period, whereas, using derivatives do not weaken the stability of banks from recently developed countries. We deduce that banks from emerging countries are more destabilized by using derivatives than banks from recently developed countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper develops a decision-analysis model to prioritize and select the site to establish a new hospital over different indicators such as cost, market conditions, environmental factors, government factors, locations and demographics. In this way, an integrated model is proposed under the intuitionistic fuzzy information (IFI), the standard deviation (SD), the rank-sum (RS) and the measurement of alternatives and ranking using the compromise solution (MARCOS) approach for ranking hospital sites (HSs).

Design/methodology/approach

The IF-SD-RS model is presented to obtain the combined weight with the objective and subjective weights of diverse sub-criteria and indicators for ranking sites to establish the hospital. The IF-MARCOS model is discussed to prioritize the various sites to establish the hospital over several crucial indicators and sub-criteria.

Findings

The authors implement the developed model on a case study of HSs assessment for the construction of new hospital. In this regard, inclusive set of 6 key indicators and 18 sub-criteria are considered for the evaluation of HSs. This study distinguished that HS (h2) with combined utility function 0.737 achieves highest rank compared to the other three sites for the given information. Sensitivity analysis is discussed with different parameter values of sub-criteria to examine how changes in weight parameter ratings of the sub-criteria affect the prioritization of the options. Finally, comparative discussion is made with the diverse extant models to show the reasonability of the developed method.

Originality/value

This study aims to develop an original hybrid weighting tool called the IF-SD-RS model with the integration of IF-SD and IF-RS approaches to find the indicators' weights for prioritizing HSs. The developed integrated weighting model provides objective weight by IF-SD and subjective weight with the IF-RS model. The model presented in the paper deals with a consistent multi-attribute decision analysis (MADA) concerning the relations between indicators and sub-criteria for choosing the appropriate options using the developed IF-SD-RS-MARCOS model.

Abstract

Purpose

Achieving a zero-carbon city requires a long-term strategic perspective. The authors propose a decision-making model which would take into account the economic, environmental and social impacts for prioritizing the zero-carbon measures for sustainable urban transportation.

Design/methodology/approach

An integrated intuitionistic fuzzy gained and lost dominance score (IF-GLDS) model is introduced based on intuitionistic fuzzy Yager weighted aggregation (IFYWA) operators and proposed weight-determining IF-SPC procedure. In addition, a weighting tool is presented to obtain the weights of decision experts. Further, the feasibility and efficacy of developed IF-SPC-GLDS model is implemented on a multi-criteria investment company selection problem under IFS context.

Findings

The results of the developed model, “introducing zero-emission zones” should be considered as the first measure to implement. The preference of this initiative offers sustainable transport in India to achieve a zero-carbon transport by having the greatest impact on the modal shift from cars to sustainable mobility modes with a lower operational and implementation cost as well as having greater public support. The developed model utilized can be relocated to other smart cities which aim to achieve a zero-carbon transport. Sensitivity and comparative analyses are discussed to reveal the robustness of obtained result. The outcomes show the feasibility of the developed methodology which yields second company as the suitable choice, when compared to and validated using the other MCDA methods from the literature, including TOPSIS, COPRAS, WASPAS and CoCoSo with intuitionistic fuzzy information.

Originality/value

A new intuitionistic fuzzy symmetry point of criterion (IF-SPC) approach is presented to find weights of criteria under IFSs setting. Then, an IF-GLDS model is introduced using IFYWA operators to rank the options in the realistic multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) procedure. For this purpose, the IFYWA operators and their properties are developed to combine the IFNs. These operators can offer a flexible way to deal with the realistic MCDA problems with IFS context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology and approach adapted to conduct a wind tunnel experiment on the inverted joined-wing airplane flying model together with the results obtained.

Design/methodology/approach

General assumptions underlying the dual-use model design are presented in this paper. The model was supposed to be used for both wind tunnel tests and flight tests that significantly drive its size and internal structure. Wind tunnel tests results compared with the outcome of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were used to assess airplane flying qualities before the maiden flight was performed.

Findings

Extensive data about the aerodynamic characteristics of the airplane were collected. Clean configurations in symmetric and asymmetric cases and also configurations with various control surface deflections were tested.

Practical implications

The data obtained experimentally made it possible to predict the performance and stability properties of the unconventional airplane and to draw conclusions on improvements in further designs of this configuration.

Originality/value

The airplane described in this paper differs from frequently analyzed joined-wing configurations, as it boasts a front lifting surface attached at the top of the fuselage, whereas the aft one is attached at the bottom. The testing technique involving the application of a dual-use model is also innovative.

Abstract

Purpose

Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is the most economical additive manufacturing technique. The purpose of this paper is to describe a detailed review of this technique. Total 211 research papers published during the past 26 years, that is, from the year 1994 to 2019 are critically reviewed. Based on the literature review, research gaps are identified and the scope for future work is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

Literature review in the domain of FDM is categorized into five sections – (i) process parameter optimization, (ii) environmental factors affecting the quality of printed parts, (iii) post-production finishing techniques to improve quality of parts, (iv) numerical simulation of process and (iv) recent advances in FDM. Summary of major research work in FDM is presented in tabular form.

Findings

Based on literature review, research gaps are identified and scope of future work in FDM along with roadmap is discussed.

Research limitations/implications

In the present paper, literature related to chemical, electric and magnetic properties of FDM parts made up of various filament feedstock materials is not reviewed.

Originality/value

This is a comprehensive literature review in the domain of FDM focused on identifying the direction for future work to enhance the acceptability of FDM printed parts in industries.

Abstract

Purpose

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities are increasingly prominent in the current agendas of firms, regulatory agencies and consumers worldwide. It is vital for banks to understand how consumers perceive CSR activities, as such activities strengthen their brand equity building. This study examines the relationship between financial consumers’ perceptions of banks’ CSR initiatives and brand equity, identifying a mediating influence of consumer trust and satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey was conducted by distributing questionnaires to Italian banking consumers (941 valid responses). The research hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

Our analysis reveals that consumers’ perceptions of banks’ CSR initiatives directly affect brand equity. Moreover, trust and satisfaction positively mediate the relationship between consumers’ perceptions of CSR initiatives and brand equity in the Italian banking industry.

Originality/value

These findings advance understanding by making a novel contribution to the literature; they also have managerial implications. In terms of literature advancement, we provide new evidence related to a context with specific features, namely Italy. From a managerial perspective, this study highlights the importance of informing Italian customers about and promoting awareness of sustainable activities. In turn, client perceptions affect the banks’ value.
