Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of cutting fluid applied by minimum quantity technique when milling AISI 4140 steel with TiAlN coated cemented carbide inserts.
Design/methodology/approach
The vegetable oil based cutting fluid evaluated was applied through a nozzle at the centre of the tool holder under vaporized conditions with a flow rate between 0 (dry cutting) and 200 ml/h, at 50 ml/h increments. Tool wear (based on maximum flank wear, VBmax), surface roughness parameters (Ra and Rt) and burr formation (length of burr, h) were recorded and evaluated. Scanning electron microscope images and energy dispersive X‐ray analysis of the worn tools show adhesion as the dominant wear mechanism.
Findings
Encouraging tool performance was recorded when milling AISI 4140 steel due to improved lubrication and cooling at the cutting interfaces. Increase in cutting fluid flow rate improves tool life with gradual reduction of the surface roughness parameters and negligible influence on the burr length generated.
Practical implications
Results can be immediately applied on the shop floor.
Originality/value
The results show the improvement in tool wear after increase of the flow rate of the cutting fluid, applied by minimum quantity technique.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to investigate the effect of GDP growth on crime and to test the hypothesis of nonlinearity. Additionally, we estimate the interaction between GDP and income inequality and examine its impact on the relationship between GDP and homicide rates.
Design/methodology/approach
The study utilizes panel data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), spanning the period from 2000 to 2018 and estimates dynamic panel GMM models.
Findings
We found a nonlinear relationship between GDP and homicide rates, indicating a dual effect of GDP on the occurrence of lethal crimes. Moreover, income inequality conditions the effect of GDP on homicide rates, exerting a significant influence. We conclude that in contexts characterized by high levels of income inequality, GDP growth is more effective in reducing crime, as there is greater potential for improvement.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the complex nonlinearity between economic conditions, income inequality and homicide rates.

Abstract
Purpose
Innovation has been considered as an essential activity for companies to compete in modern and dynamic business environments. For the nations, innovation is considered a fundamental key activity for sustaining economic growth and competitive advantage over other countries. This paper aims to achieve a better understanding of the relationship between the quality of a country’s institutions and its levels of innovation activities and results.
Design/methodology/approach
Controlling for the effects of the efforts and investments in research and development (R&D) and the foreign direct investments (FDI), this work proceeds to regression analysis to obtain the association between the quality of countries’ institutions and their innovation activities. Data was obtained from the Global Innovation Index (GII) for innovation activities and the Worldwide Governance Index, of the World Bank, for the quality of institutions for 127 countries.
Findings
The results show that the effectiveness of public administration and the regulatory quality are the quality of institution variables associated with the innovation activities. Also, this paper obtained a clustering of countries with a rank regarding not only innovation activities but also the conditions of the institutions’ quality, based on government effectiveness, regulatory quality, R&D, FDI and GII. This new compounded classification divided the 127 countries into three clusters – mature innovators, fresh innovators and structuring for innovation.
Originality/value
New forms of innovations’ ranking viewing can help to understand the conditionings that enhance countries’ and institutions’ competitiveness.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to compare the results from mechanical testing with measurements of surface-dependent properties performed on polyamide parts made by selective laser sintering (SLS) to assess a possible correlation between them.
Design/methodology/approach
Fabrication of Nylon 12 (Duraform PA®) samples using different laser power levels and their characterization by tensile testing, roughness and Raman scattering measurements.
Findings
Among the surface methods investigated, the results from Raman spectroscopy are the best ones, but methods dependent on surface analysis are not really suitable as indicators of the mechanical properties. The correlation coefficients for linear fitting obtained when the normalized results of mechanical properties are plotted against the surface properties are too low. Furthermore, the ambiguity between surface and mechanical data makes it impossible to use these surface properties for prediction purposes in the industrial environment.
Originality/value
Quantitative evaluation and correlation between mechanical properties and surface properties of SLS-made samples.

Abstract
Purpose
To explore and measure wearout or the acceptance threshold, beyond which, messages in the form of mobile text advertising generate irritation. To assess the set of factors that positively or negatively, according to literature, influences the attitude towards advertising in short message service (SMS) format and on this basis to propose future research along this line. There is also a focus on irritation antecedents.
Methodology/approach
Two surveys are used to prevent unbiased answers. The first one is driven to study the wearout effect in the SMS context. An offline survey is carried out using a structured questionnaire. A sample size of 188 using convenience sampling is collected. The second research is driven to study irritation and attitude towards SMS advertising. Data are collected through an online questionnaire which is published through social media platforms, an e-mail mailing list and a quick response (QR) code. An international sample size of 253 applying a convenience and snow ball sampling procedure is collected.
Findings
The wearout threshold and irritation antecedents in the mobile advertising context are identified as well as positive and negative factors which influence attitude towards SMS advertising. The replies do not match exactly with the significant factors found in previous research.
Research limitations/implications
There are some, among them, sample size and sampling procedure; only one sector was analysed and, although reliability is acceptable, the number of items in each measurement scale was reduced to only two.
Practical implications
Wearout and the characteristics of an SMS message capable to generate positive attitude are described.
Social implications
Guidelines to improve public attitudes towards SMS advertising and prevention from wearout are given.
Originality/value
Wearout in the mobile advertising context is explored and some insights regarding irritation antecedents and the role played by frequency and other positive factors in the causal model proposed by the academy are assessed.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to propose and assess a model with the main elements influencing Brazilian agtech scalability with the aim of supporting the scalability process of startups that find themselves in the stage of initial conception of the business model.
Design/methodology/approach
The research was conducted using the design science research (DSR) method. The data for assessing the proposed model were collected through in-depth interviews. The answers were analyzed quantitatively, using descending hierarchical classification (DHC), correspondence factor analysis (CFA), and level of agreement; and qualitatively, using content analysis.
Findings
Considering the Brazilian context, the objective, environmental, structural, and evaluative dimensions presented positive characteristics for the main criteria analyzed (operational viability, generality, clarity, adaptation to the reality studied, completeness, consistency, comprehensibility, and structural simplicity). Specific improvements were proposed in all the criteria analyzed.
Originality/value
The artifact can be considered a strategic guide for agtechs that have yet to overcome the barrier of initial conception of the business model. The model enables the identification of the main problems that agtechs can encounter in their life cycle, as well as seeking solutions in advance.

Purpose
This study aims to understand how family values, family managers and non-family managers influence the institutionalization of management control systems in family firms.
Design/methodology/approach
A case study was conducted in a family business group that underwent a process of adoption and transformation of its management control system.
Findings
The results indicate that several non-family managers, besides the controller, played crucial roles in harmonizing the logic of a generalized practice (quality control management) with the existing rationalities of the family firm. The authors also observed that the ISO 9001/quality control management logic together with the family values of professionalism, meritocracy and an emphasis on the business’s identity rather than the family identity have laid the groundwork for the formalization of the business group’s management controls.
Practical implications
This study shows that quality control management is an accessible source of guidance for the formalization of managerial activities within an organization.
Originality/value
This paper contributes to the literature by clarifying the role performed by non-family managers during the formalization of management control in family firms. It also shows how the family values of professionalism, meritocracy and an emphasis on the business’s identity rather than family identity can influence the way control is exercised within family firms.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore the applicability of lean construction (LC) concepts and tools in necessary, but non-value-added activities (NVAA) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The application of the lean tools in this way facilitates the flow of information and handling material, improving productivity, quality and performance. Finally, practical results motivate a discussion on the real potential of LC principles and on the challenges related to its implementation.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology makes use of direct involvement in the environment under study. Some of the activities performed were the value stream mapping and time and motion studies of the company’s process selected, identification of wastes and the proposition of improvements to be implemented.
Findings
The main findings are related to the benefits of the application of LC not only in value-added activities but in activities that can influence the development and workforce planning, especially for SME businesses. This company should be able to achieve better management decisions and results after implementing the LC principles, overcoming the limited resources.
Originality/value
This proposed method helps in overcoming the lack of systematic procedures, enabling LC in activities that not add value properly. It has the advantage of integrating existing tools and models effectively, which not only improve the shortcomings of the conventional methods but also result in more convenient calculation and application.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess the Boussinesq approach for a wide range of Ra (10 × 6 to 10 × 11) in two-dimensional (square cavity) and three-dimensional (cubic cavity) problems for air- and liquid-filled domains.
Design/methodology/approach
The thermal behavior in “differentially heated cavities” filled with air (low and medium Rayleigh) and water (high Rayleigh) is solved using computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) (OpenFOAM) with a non-compressible (Boussinesq) and compressible approach (real water properties from the IAPWS database).
Findings
The results from the wide range of Rayleigh numbers allowed for the establishment of the limitation of the Boussinesq approach in problems where the fluid has significant density changes within the operation temperature range and especially when the dependence of density with temperature is not linear. For these cases, the symmetry behavior predicted by Boussinesq is far from the compressible results, thus inducing a transient heat imbalance and leading to a higher mean temperature.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of the present research can be found in the shortage of experimental data for very high Rayleigh problems.
Practical implications
Practical implications of the current research could be use of the Boussinesq approach by carefully observing its limitations, especially for sensible problems such as the study of pressure vessels, nuclear reactors, etc.
Originality/value
The originality of this paper lies in addressing the limitations of the Boussinesq approach for high Rayleigh water systems. This fluid is commonly used in numerous industrial equipment. This work presents valuable conclusions about the limitations of the currently used models to carry out industrial simulations.
