Abstract
Proposes to highlight the centrality of human resources in the Ten Commandments (TCs), providing a perspective regarding their application for business organizations. Focuses on the TCs in the Abrahamic religions (Jews, Christians, Muslims) and explains how loyalty, networking and minimizing conflict aims to ensure survival and continuity. Concludes TCs are general moral principles that reflect the general orientations and directions of their respective religions and that companies should give attention to universal aspects of TCs and their qualities.

Abstract
The subject of Jihad has been a fiercly debated topic in the past few decades. Contradictory translations have been adopted by differing religious groups and political camps. In some quarters Jihad has been associated with violence and war. Other quarters perceive the Jihad to mean a striving within oneself and the struggle for self‐improvement. In this paper, the historical and contemporary perspectives of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam regarding Jihad are outlined. The evolution of the meaning of Jihad in each religion is clarified and similarities and dissimilarities among the three religions are highlighted. Various forms of Jihad are presented. The paper, however, argues that true Jihad means an active participation in social improvement and economic development. In addition, the paper provides implications of Jihad for business and organizations.

Abstract
Focuses on the nature of world affairs and its impact on international business. Proposes three scenarios, China asserting its regional role, the India‐Pakistan war over Kashmir and peace in the Middle East. Cites that any of these scenarios constitute a real threat to world stability. Ascertains that irrationality is a persistent state of world affairs and is not yet the legacy of yesterday’s world.

Abstract
This paper reviews the Ten Commandments (TCs) in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It investigates work ethics in the three religions. In addition, the paper examines the meaning and implications of the TCs in each faith. Ethical and social considerations are addressed. It is argued that the TCs set the moral rules and foundations for individuals and groups. TCs, however, should be regarded as general moral guidelines for personal and business conduct.

Abstract
Kenich Ohmae published his acclaimed book, The End of the Nation State in 1995. He predicted that because of investment, industry, information technology, and individual consumers, the nation state has become largely unnecessary. That is, nation states no longer have to play a market‐making role and have become unnatural units. Their eclipse, he argued, has been accelerated by the rising influence of global corporations and the ascendancy of global logic in international affairs. Indeed, the demise of the Soviet Union and the abatement of the Cold War has reinforced the impression that the world is moving into an era where business cooperation and economic integration, rather than ideological differences and militaristic competition governing relations among nations and world affairs.

Abstract
This essay focuses on European monetary unification to be completed before the 21st century (1999). In December 1991 in the Dutch city of Maastricht the German Central Bank (Bundesbank) clearly showed that it intends to set and influence the economic policies of all of Europe. Utilizing Game theoretical analysis this paper argues that for Germany a policy of noncooperative leadership is the best strategy. However, for the rest of Europe gaining German cooperation in setting monetary policy is in the community's overall interest. Given the long run need to coordinate policy in a unified Europe, the Bundesbank will cooperate with the rest of EC members. Until the final outcome of this union becomes known, a climate of uncertainty will hover over financial management practices.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to outline a small research project designed to explore the practices of the UK work-based learning (WBL) tutors in facilitating formal research projects in the workplace.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected using a short questionnaire to practitioners administered electronically and a daylong workshop where issues were discussed in greater depth by participating tutors.
Findings
The main findings are that there is a degree of agreement by WBL tutors about the distinctiveness of WBL research projects; that although there is increasing use of technology to support delivery only one institution is using e-learning as the principal means of delivery; emphasis is upon a relatively small number of techniques and there is a strong preference for qualitative over quantitative methods.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitation of the study is the relatively small number of active participants. However, this is the only study of its kind and the results offer insights into an important element of pedagogic practice in WBL.
Practical implications
The project enabled the identification of common approaches and facilitated discussion of problems shared by WBL tutors across the field. There appears to be a consensus that situated investigation exists within a different contextual framework to traditional academic dissertation projects and that the focus is therefore necessarily on generating data as the basis for active problem solving.
Originality/value
This is the only empirical study of practice in respect of facilitating research projects on WBL programmes in higher education.
